Theyre many different genres of music; it can vary from country folk music to aggressive
grime. With different genres of music come different music videos for the different genres.
There will be a difference in sound, editing, mise en scene and the camera work. In Hip Hop
I will be using 50 Cents music video to 21
questions and T.I.s video to whatever you
like. The cinematography in 50 cents song
used lots of close up shots for detail and wide
shots to fit the whole story in. It also used a
split screen where the man in the video is in
jail phoning his girlfriend/wife. In 21
questions the main story of the music video
is 50 Cent imagining going to jail and being
away from his girl whilst having bigger
problems in prison as he has haters. The 2
main locations of the video are in prison or in his
house for when he gets arrested. The clothes he wore
at the start were typical hip hop clothes (baggy tshirt, baggy jeans, fresh trainers and multiple gold
chains). In most hip hop music videos the artist has
props of money, guns and drugs this is to somewhat
show the power they could hold or the past life they
had, there is also violence in the video. The lighting in
the video is low the shots are filmed very dark. In the
editing to 21 questions it uses fades, dissolves and
lots of short shots so the audience gets many angles. There is ambient sound in this video
where you can hear police sirens behind the music. The
sirens could also be a parallel sound as they compliment
the track and this would only apply in hip hop music
videos as it suits the genre.
On the other hand in T.Is video its much more about the
things money can buy, There is a variety of shots from
close ups, long shots, wide shots and tracking shots
where a mobile frame travels backwards in this video.
The locations used in this video are expensive shops,
hotels and airports, this is to show the wealth and money which T.I. has and in the video he
is showing all his wealth to a girl he has just met and he is amazing her, and her life will
drastically change if she gets together with him. The
clothes that are shown in this video are smarter than
typical hip hop clothes as it also shows that T.I. is
classy. The editing used in this video to change shots
is straight away and fades. The sounds used are
synchronous as they match the movements of the
artist and there is dialogue at the start and the end
of the video. Overall I feel hip hop videos either
describe the past life a rapper had with guns, drugs and going to prison or the high end life
they now have with all the girls, all the fancy cars and the mass amount of money.

Another genre which is quite different to hip hop is

rock, for Rock music videos I used as example the
music video for Bon Jovis song you give love a bad
name and Guns n roses music video to sweet child
o mine. The cinematography for Bon Jovis song
used lots of close ups and you could see the passion
that the artist shows whilst performing the song.
They use low angle shots to show that theyre
powerful and intimidating. The location of the video
is at a live
concert, this
includes lots of similar shots. The clothing they wore
was very different to hip-hop, theyd wear dark clothes
which had a mix of being informal and formal. They had
lots of power whilst controlling the crowd. The editing
was fast, no transitions were used and many colours
and lighting was used. This is because of the live
concert where it was filmed. Sound wise, it begins quiet
then breaks out loud, you can hear screaming which is
an ambient sound as it surrounds because of the crowd.
In the guns n roses video it
is shot fully in black
and white and being the
same genre as bon
jovis video it is also shot
from a live concert. It
is very similar to the first
video in which it also
uses many close-ups where
you can see the
passion of the artist whilst
they sing their song.
Also it uses two shot where
there are two figures
in a frame. The location was
them being on a
stage and the clothing was
all dark and abit like
an old fashioned
motorcycles gang
would wear, They all had
long hair and many
tattoos, which could signal that they are not to be messed
with. The editing is also fast and includes lots of short shots
where you can se the instruments being played; there is
completely no colour in the video. The sound used is
diegetic as you can the drums being played, the guitars and
the artist belting out the song.
Overall I believe that Rock music videos are mainly from the
live concerts as you can see the atmosphere that there is
and how energetic they are. It also showed me the passion
they possess whilst performing where in a music video they
wouldnt have due to the atmosphere not being the same.

Thirdly the genres pop, for pop music videos I

used Fifth harmonys video to worth it and
maroon 5s music video to If I never see your
face again. In Fifth Harmonys video they use
many shots such as long, mid and close shots,
wide shots are used during the chorus so you
can see the entire group. The location of the
video is on a set and it includes many colour,
most of them being pinks and light blues. It
also tells a story in the video, this is to engage
the fans of the group or to attract people to carry on watching the video. Also the girl group
are wearing clothes that attract both men
and woman and some dance moods are
quite naughty, this would attract more
male fans. As there is so many shots the
editing is very sharp and there isnt many
transitions but it can zoom in and out and
have tracking shots moving around a room,
The chorus is fast and with the fast edit it
also adds more interest to the video. The
sound used is synchronous and it matches
with the movements of the group, it is
always synced and it doesnt have any surrounding sounds, so it isnt ambient. It is just the
music from an album.
In the Maroon 5 video it very simplistic shots from short and long. A wide shot can fit the
whole band in and the story and this
is what they use.
The location of the video is on a set
and a room where the lead singer is
dressed very smartly, It has very
bright colours. There is a story in the
video, its editing makes the video feel
like its a narrative style and the
music cuts to the beat. It is slow at
the start then towards the chorus it
increases in speed; this gets more
shots in and different scenes. I think
this technique makes the audience more interested to see how the story plays out. Some
pop music videos come from a films soundtrack but this songs sound uses synchronous
sound to match
movement
and has no
ambient
sounds, which
interfere
with the music.
I think that
overall in pop
music
videos are that
they are
narratives and
tell the
audience a
story, they
use many
bright
colours which
normally
attract younger
fans. Pop
videos are to entertain and not nessacarily pro9mote their actual music.

Lastly I looked at indie music videos and

what characteristics they had, Firstly I
looked at the Arctic Monkeys video to r u
mine, It uses a selfie camera angle
where the lead singer is recording himself
and his
mate in
a car,
this
would
be
using a
small
camera. It also uses high angles where the lead singer
will be looking towards the camera like he is sending a
message. The main shots used are wide. The location of
the video is in a car and where the car takes them on a
journey to their bands set. The clothing worn is all black
but isnt as aggressive as rocks all black look. Also the
whole video is in black and white so there is completely
no colour (this is a massive difference to a pop video).
The lighting seems to be very low. It looks like the video
was shot at night so it was natural lighting. Also with the
story line to the video it starts with a radio broadcaster
announcing that the next song to be played will be the
Arctic Monkeys and at the end of the song to finish the
broadcaster says that was the end. The sound of the
video is asynchronous and synchronous depending on which scene it is in, it is also nondiegetic. Also in this video apart from the start and end where the setting is the radio
station, the whole video is done in one take or made to look that way. This completely
differs to pop where it changes shots every 2-4 seconds.
The second music video I did
which was indie was Tom Odells
video for Another Love. Like the
Arctic monkeys music video this
video is also done in one take. I
think that it is a master shot as it
has focus on the backgrounds
and him (as you can see in the
photo to the left). The shot starts
close and as it gets to the chorus
it slowly zooms out.
The location of the video looks to
be in a living room, the living
room of the artist and what could
be a girlfriend or wife, it is very old fashioned. The clothing is casual but dark and there are
shadows on the cast in the video. It uses very little light. Also the video starts with higher

James Stacey
lighting in the start of the video and fades down to the low lighting at the end, this may
show that he is now sad after an argument with his girlfriend/wife. In the whole video the
artist is sat down, it creates a story that links to the song. The women in the video is also
dressed in dark clothing and it looks as if she is angry that the artist (main character) has
done wrong.
The editing of the video is just the zooming
out of the video and at the end it turns to a
black screen shortly and as was at the start
of the video, the camera is on a zoom into his
face. The sound in this video is synchronous
to the artist speaking them, it is almost like
dialogue. There is no ambient sound it is just
the pure music. Overall in the two videos I did
for the indie genre are they both seemed
light cheaper videos to make as they didnt
have much editing work in them. It also has
its main aim to promote the artists music.
The locations differ but they both wear dark
clothing, which isnt aggressive, the settings are both dark. As the editing and camerawork
isnt too complex it shows that the artists main intention is to promote their music.
