Monday

Times Table grid

Introduce TOWN activity
Introduction of key terms.
Students write the
definitions of the following
terms with examples.
- numerator
- denominator
- mixed numeral
- whole number
- proper fraction
- improper fraction
Students create a table in
their books and must sort
fractions into the correct
column

Times Table Grid

TOWN
Recap prior learning
- students brainstorm
what they already
know about fractions
Explain that whole
numbers may be
added to a fraction to
create a mixed
numeral. For example 2
may be added to to
create 2 .
Model the addition for
students and utilise
the mathematical
language
Students are given
some whole numbers
and are asked to add
them to proper
fractions to create
mixed numerals.
Students answer

TOWN
Recap prior learning
Students play the
chocolate fractions
game.
- Three Fury Friends
chocolates are placed
on three separate
chairs. 8 volunteers are
chosen to play the
game. Students choose
to stand behind a chair
one at a time and must
justify why they have
chosen to stand behind
it. The amount of
people standing behind
the chair will be the
amount of people
sharing the one
chocolate. For example
if 3 people choose to
stand behind the same

TOWN
Recap prior learning
Explain to students
that just like adding
proper fractions with
the same
denominator, proper
fractions can also be
subtracted.
Model the subtraction
of proper fractions
with the same
denominator.
Students work their
way through a series
of questions to
practice how to
subtract fractions.
Students complete 3
worded problems
involving the
subtraction of
fractions with the

common proper and

improper fractions up to
tenths. Provide students
with a list to choose from.
Reflection- Students write
down one thing they now
know about fractions.

worded problems
involving mixed
numeral outcomes .
For example, Ben has 2
chocolate bars. Brooke
gives Ben of a bar.
How much chocolate
does Ben have?
Reflection- Students
write a worded
problem that will result
in a mixed numeral
answer.

chair, they will receive

1/3 each . Students are
asked to explain their
choices.
Recap key terms
Explain how to add
fractions with the
same denominator
Emphasize that only the
numerator changes, the
denominator stay the
same. This may create
an improper fraction
Students work through
a range of questions
where they are required
to add fractions with
the same denominator
- EXTENSION students
convert improper
fractions to mixed
numeral fractions.
Reflection- students tell
their friend 3 facts
about fractions from
what they have learnt

same denominator
Reflection- Students
write down the steps
of how to answer a
question involving the
subtraction of
fractions and provide
an example.

TOWN
Recap prior learning
Students complete the FAST FIVE MINUTE CHALLENGE
- A series of questions involving the content throughout
the week are put on the board. A countdown timer is out
on the whiteboard. Students must write and complete
as many questions as they can within the five minute
period.
Go through answers with students
Teacher breaks students up into five different groups.
Students are asked to work in groups to create an
engaging video explaining how to solve problems involving
the addition or subtration of fractions as well as key
terms. Students are asked to film their videos using the
iPads.
Students watch each others videos on the IWB and
provide feedback.
Reflection- Students are asked to answer a worded
problem in their books annotating each step involved.
