Lesson Plan: Report on Critically Endangered Species

Scientists estimate that species are going extinct at 1,000 to 10,000 times the natural
rate, and that by mid-century, 30 to 50 percent of all species will be heading toward

Threats that it faces
Additional Notes
Current action being taken to conserve it
Students will write short individual reports on their choice of
critically endangered animals. To generate ideas, students
may visit websites such as IUCN Red List and ARKive,
which will allow them to sort by conservation status.

Date:

Students should include these elements in their reports:

Description of animal (size, characteristics,
appearance)
Habitat and climate
Diet
Reproduction (number of babies, size of babies,
when and where does the female have them,
interesting facts)
Conservation status (Why is it critically endangered?
How many are left? What is threatening it?)
Current conservation efforts
Images (picture of species, map of habitat)
Teachers can choose to assign their students to present
their information in poster format in addition to a written
report.
