Day Hiking Department Supervisor
Emily Massingale appreciates all that is beautiful about the natural world and believes the woods can set
you free. She is 21 years old and attends Eastern Washington University's Outdoor Recreation program. Emily
has been and avid adventurer all of her life and a backpacker since she was big enough to carry my pack! She
loves teaching people how to experience the outdoors in a fun and safe way. When Emily isnt spending her
nights in the woods she enjoy reading adventure books and planning new trips! My favorite place to spend a
week or so is the Hoh Forest in Olympic National Park Washington. She is excited to make lasting, positive
connections with the participants of our program in a fun, outdoor setting.

Geocaching Department Supervisor

Toni Graham is a Recreation Management student at Eastern Washington University, minoring in
Business Management. A native of Spokane, WA, Toni has a love for the outdoors and the leisure activities it
offers. Being a former Marine, she encourages her participants to inquire and explore while offering a sense
of structure and safety to her program. Her adventurous nature allowed her to pick up Geocaching in 2007,
she has since become an expert in the field. Toni has made it her personal mission to share the personal and
developmental skills that Geocaching offers to the at-risk youth that participate in our programs.

Horseback Riding Department Supervisor

Alyssa Nolan has been an avid horseback rider all of her life. As a therapeutic recreation student at
Eastern Washington University, she is very interested in working with the at-risk youth of our program to
increase the positivity in their life through equine therapy. She aims to help people reach their goals through
recreational outlets. Alyssa is 22 years old and well trained and qualified to manage our 40 horses and their
needs. Her passion for this program inspires our participants to return year after year.

___________________________________________________________________________

Expedition 180 proudly facilitates all day hiking experiences for under privileged adolescents. We strive to
provide memorable outdoor experiences that can open doors to positive life experiences in the futures of
our participants. We do this by offering a wide variety of hiking skills that are valuable within the hiking
experience as well as in the rest of life.
Goal: Recreate safely while learning and developing skills that participants can use to re-create
the experiences on their own long after Expedition 180 has ended.

The hiking portion of expedition 180 is in the introductory phase of our week long program therefore it
enables the first stages of communication, teamwork, and personal development to begin. Skillsets are
learned before the activity, during the activity and after the activity.
Stage 1: Pre-Trip Skills
The core of hiking, or any adventure activity, is being prepared and having adequate knowledge of your
intended location and trip objectives. Proper education prior to the trip is the key to success. Classes such as
Choosing the right hiking boots, Packing your pack, and Fitting your pack are all necessary skills to know
before you embark on your adventure. Pre-trip skills like these help you to evaluate and plan appropriately.
Stage 2: Mid-Trip Skills
Some skills are learned best using the hands on approach. Skills such as What to do if youre lost, Reading a
map, and LNT are perhaps three of the most important classes in the Day Hiking program. Learning these
class skills while immersed in the field will increase their effectiveness.
Stage 3: Post-Trip Skills
The Photography and Reflection classes help the participant to take in all the positive aspects of the day
they had. Reflecting solidifies the experience for the participant and creates a memory.

Hiking Programs: 2015

Choosing the Right Hiking Boots
Sore or uncomfortable feet can ruin a great adventure. The participants will learn proper sock layering as well
as the benefits of different boot styles for certain terrain patterns. Cost: $23.20
Packing Your Pack
The basics of packing a backpack are essential skills for any trail traveler. In this activity participants will learn
what items are necessary as well as what items can be removed to save space and minimize pack weight.
Cost: $11.10
Fitting Your Pack
Adjusting your backpack to fit your body frame once it has weight in it will help to balance the pack over the
body surface for a more comfortable carry. Participants will also learn where to keep their bear spray ready
and available in this activity and also how to deploy bear spray for our defense. Cost: $3.47
Leave No Trace Hiking
Leave no trace hiking is made up of eight principles that make outdoor use available to all. Participants will
learn the principles and tools needed to protect and respect nature while we are recreating. Cost: $0.70
Flora and Fauna Identification
Being aware of the other living creatures around you can offer a new perspective to an outdoor adventure.
When participants realize they are not the only living things in the forest they can begin to open their minds to
what else is out there. Cost: $2.50
Filtering Water
Being able to filter water can be the difference between life and death in the woods. Having this basic survival
skill can ensure safe travels in outdoor pursuits that the participants might choose in the future. Cost: $4.55
Trail Courtesy
Trail courtesy is an important gesture of respect for your fellow travelers. Trails arent only for hikers, bikers
and horseback riders also have a right to the path. The question is, who moves aside for whom? In this activity
Participants will learn which mode of travel has a right-of-way to the other. Cost: $0.70
Reading and Following Maps
Learning to read and follow maps is an essential life skill that can be helpful long after our program has ended.
Participants will learn how to read a map of the area and lead themselves to our lunch camp by following trail
markers and directions given. Cost: $5.40
Triangulating Your Position
By using landmarks and the map that participants have learned to read prior, they will be able to find their
location. Once they find their location they will be able to figure out which direction they need to travel to get
back to the trail or back to camp. Cost: $3.36
What to Do If Lost
Participants will learn the benefits of carrying a survival kit as well as actions to take as soon as you believe
you are lost. Participants will also learn how to stay safe until help arrives. Cost: $8.60
Photography
By taking photos, participants are able to capture their favorite things and remember positive influences and
aspects of the trip. Giving participants freedom to choose what they enjoy and what they want to photograph
is a great way to let them feel in charge for that moment. Cost: $3.42
Reflection
Reflection is arguably the most important part of the trip. This time gives participants the ability to think and
reflect about their day and experiences. By journaling, they are free to experience the things they loved over
and over again when they open that journal at home. Cost: $0.82

Expedition 180 proudly offers exciting exploration opportunities for youth to participate in. This program
encourages team work and problem solving. It also promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.
Goals: By working in teams, the participants build trust, learn teamwork, problem
solve and share in the accomplishment of finding the cache.
Geocaching is typically offered on several different levels based on the terrain and the difficulty of finding the
cache. At Expedition 180 we offer four different levels that are designed to be inclusive for younger
participants and those with disabilities.
Level 1: Easy Terrain, Easy Find
This level offers trails with gentle slopes and no barriers. The caches are reasonably concealed,
making for an appealing excursion for youth with limited mobility and younger participants.
Level 2: Easy Terrain, Difficult Find
The trails remain the same as in level one, but the caches are concealed in a way that challenges
participants mentally more than physically.
Level 3: Difficult Terrain, Easy Find
This level offers trails with rugged inclines and several obstacles to conquer. The caches are
reasonably concealed, making for an exciting excursion for older participants with fewer mobility
limitations.
Level 4: Difficult Terrain, Difficult Find
The trails remain the same as in level three, but the caches are concealed in a way that challenges
participants mentally and physically.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Expedition 180 proudly facilitates river rafting and camping trips for at-risk youth. We challenge youth to
push themselves mentally and physically during our fun and engaging adventures. We provide a positive
experience with an exciting time on the water. While camping we strive to provide life skills in cooking and
working together with others.

Goals: Recreate safely while floating down the river while developing personal growth and build skills
that will benefit the participants throughout life.

The river rafting and camping of Expedition 180 is a beginner phase of our weeklong program. This allows
participants to engage in a fun activity without needing prior skills or experience. Participants will learn soft
skills, hard skills, and personal development.

Stage 1: Pre-trip
The core of river rafting and camping is being prepared and having adequate knowledge of your intended
location and trip objectives. Proper education about the risks and hazards on the river are key to the safety of
the individuals involved. Sessions on equipping the raft, safety talk, and paddle captain briefing are necessary
for a successful day on the river.
Stage 2: On the water skills
Skills are best learned while doing the activity. Skills such as how to paddle, what a high side is, looking for
hazards on the water like holes, strainers, and foot entrapment are the most important skills learned to be
safe on the water.
Stage 3: Camp Skills
Camping is a great way to get in touch with life without the many distractions that everyday provides us.
Cooking and effectively communicating with others are skills that are built while camping and are useful tools
in other settings in life.

Item #1 Raft
For a successful river rafting excursion the purchase of a multi-passenger raft is imperative.
Quote 1: Aire Center Mount Frame with 14 raft Price: $5,199
The 156D is a big, agile boat that is great for large paddle raft'in parties. The 156D can
comfortable fit up to 9 people and is an outfitter favorite.
www.aire.com
Quote 2: Maravia Ranger Price: $5,995
The Ranger features ten 2.5" D-rings, three removeable thwarts, four carry handles, a full 10year warranty, Maravia's TOUGH Class VI base fabric and the best URETHANE coating on the
market - over 40 times the abrasion resistance of PVC and over 15 times the abrasion resistance
of Hypalon.
www.maravia.com
Quote 3: NRS E-132d self-bailing raft Price: $5,200
The NRS Otter 140 is the "little big man" of rafts. At 14' long and 7' wide, it's small enough to
navigate tight rivers and large enough to carry heavy loads on multi-day trips. A great fishing
boat too!
www.nrs.com

Item #2 Cataraft
The purchase of a cataraft will allow for easier and more convenient transport of the classes required gear.
Quote 1: Aire Lion 14 Price: $2,599
Strong and powerful like its namesake, the Lion 14 will make the haul. This boat has a load
capacity comparable to most 16' catarafts. The Lion 14 was designed to carry lots of gear for use
on a variety of rivers, especially the smaller, tighter rivers where length of boat is a factor.
www.aire.com
Quote 2: Maravia Cataraft 14x24 Price: $2,995
Smooth curved bow and stern profiles on this highly maneuverable cataraft cut the water more
like a hard hull and gives better handling characteristics. Made of Maravia's tough Class VI
material, coated with durable urethane, and a full 10-year warranty.
www.maravia.com
Quote 3: NRS 14 River Raft Price: $2,600
Play today, haul gear tomorrow with the midsize NRS River Cat cataraft. Its quick reflexes shine
on "rapid" day trips, while 25" tubes will carry you and all your stuff to that secluded river
campsite.

_______________________________________________________________________________
Stand up and paddle. That will be the motto for the day. Balance is the key. For an entire day, each youth will
be able to have their own individual Standup Paddle Board (SUP). We will teach you a variety of skills to
become proficient on the SUP with some challenges along the way.
Goal: To help the participants of Expedition 180 gain skill sets in strand up paddle boarding as well as
gain a variety of skills that may help with lifelong activities that they may participate in when this
program is over.
Level 1: This part of the program will consist of mostly learning the basics and to educate about the materials
that are to be used.

Safety briefing, learning the equipment, stroke stance fall, and learning features of the river are all
programs that do not take much instruction or time to teach. Learning the strokes, the stance, and
how to fall properly bridge the gateway from level one to level 2.

Level 2: This gets into the more challenging aspects of paddle boarding.

Skills such as Paddling on the flat water of a lake, signaling with one another, and a relay races begin
the more exciting part of this. Each person will test their skills with one another to help other
individuals thrive in the activity.

Level 3: We have but two activities that represents part of the most challenging aspect of Standup Paddle
Boarding. These will push the limits to all the participants and will demand a high level of concentration and
hard work.

You have experienced paddling, racing, and lots of time, but there will be no greater skill that will
have to be utilized than when we participate in activities like running the river and even river surfing.
River surfing takes a tremendous amount of balance and focus. River running however requires
precise timing and knowledge of the features of the river.

Item #1 Stand-up Paddleboard
To ensure success in Stand Up Paddle Boarding, it is imperative that we have the best technology at the
cheapest price. The staff and the youth will feel the balance and weight of each board and with a better board,
each in turn will be more prosperous in this activity.

board for the whole family to use or for a variety of youth. Stable, dependable and extremely
rugged with the exclusive DURA-TEC construction. This board provides a great experience with a
stable frame to provide fantastic balance.

Quote 2: Boardworks Squid Stand Up Paddle Board Blue - $599
The perfect scaled-down version for smaller paddlers, this lightweight paddle board is stable and
easy to manage for kids and smaller adults just starting out.
www.rei.com
Quote 3: Badfish Mountain Valley Paddleboard (MVP) - $1,599
The MVP has a kayak style chine that is forgiving in eddy turns and ferries while the shedding,
high volume nose punches holes like a kayak. The 90 MVP is short enough to fit into small
eddies and pivot quickly, but the stability in whitewater has allowed this board to win some
whitewater races despite its short length. The stability and unique design of the MVP also instills
confidence in new paddlers as the progress from flat water to easy moving water.

Item #2 SUP Paddle
Similar to having the right board, in turn, you need to have the right paddle. The weight and the shape of the
blade are important to catching the right amount of water. In order for the paddle to work it should fit the
individuals. It must feel good in the hands that use them.
Quote1: Werner Paddles Soul M SUP Paddle - $263
The Soul M fits a wide range of paddlers. It is light and buoyant on the water and has a smooth
back face for a quiet stroke. This blade can be used for surfing, touring and recreational use.
www.paddleva.com
Quote 2: Bending Branches Amp Adjustable Stand Up Paddle Wood 86 - $274
Lighter than most full-synthetic paddles, the Amp marries high-tech with the beauty and
warmth of wood. The Red Alder palm grip is shaped to match the curve of your hand. Rounded
blade edges avoid catching on the water. Wraparound Rockgard edge protection helps guard
your Amp against dings. An aviation-grade carbon shaft provides stiffness and maximum power
transfer. The shaft length is adjustable, allowing you to customize the fit for different height
paddlers. The Bending Branches Amp SUP paddle looks as good in the surf as you do.

Quote 3: KIALOA Insanity Adjustable Stand Up Paddle- $219
