The Quinta da Malagueira housing scheme in Évora, Portugal designed by Álvaro Siza in 1977 follows the lines of existing footpaths and uses only two house types. The new permeable streets that were created bring connectivity to the development and become a public threshold for community interaction. Upon entering through the front doors, one encounters a private outdoor threshold space before entering the home, with the wall along the public street providing a shield for privacy. The threshold sequence moves from public to progressively more private spaces.

Alvaro Siza, 1977 The layout of the Quinta da Malagueria scheme corresponds to the earlier development of street patterns. The new roads follow lines of existing footpaths. There are only two house types in the scheme. The creation of these new streets brings a permeability to the scheme, it becomes part of the urban fabric, not a object placed on its context. These new permeable streets become a public threshold for the community. In the project, the new streets created become a public threshold in which communicty intreactions take place along walls and doorways. Upon entering trough the door, one enters not into the house as expected, but into a private outdoor threshold space. It is from here that the entrance to the house lies. The wall to the public street acts as a shield to the entrance threshold to the house, it creates a sense of privacy and solitude. The threshold sequence is a private and intimate to the users of the house.
