THE ROLL for SNARE DRUM 83 Exercises for Developing the SNARE DRUM ROLL price $5.00 (NUS.AL Brook Publishing Co. 4047 Meadowbrook Boulevard, University Heights, Ohio 44118 Pre ace ‘Much has been written in books on the study of drum as to how a drum roll should sound, but there is a scarcity of material which gives us exercises written for the definite purpose of developing a good roll. This book has been written after much discussion and correspondence with some of the leading drum teachers of this country. The average young drummer spends a great amount of time aimlessly practicing the roll. How much more would be accomplished if each time he practiced, the drum- mer would work on a special exercise with a definite aim in view. It is the opinion ofthe author that anyone who carefully follows the instructions given in this book and uses these exercises as daily practice must benefit. ‘The outstanding drum teachers who have contributed to this book have given much that is of great value to both pupil and teacher. I want to thank these men for their help and suggestions: Cloyd E. Duff Robert Matson Fred D. Hinger Joseph “Drums” Seveik A. H. “Rags” Anderton. Robert Pangborn Frank Sholle James D. Section 1 Each exercise is played 3 ways. FIRST TIME - - - - Each note is played with what we will call “THE HIT FREE BOUNCE”. We strike and let the stick bounce many times with what we might say is a “BUZZ STROKE”. Both sticks must match in the number of taps and in volume and in speed and evenness of bounce. SECOND TIME - - - - Each note is played twice (with one stroke). We will call this the “CONTROLLED DOUBLE BOUNCE”. THIRD TIME - - - - Each note is played 8 times (with one stroke). ‘We will call this the “CONTROLLED TRIPLE BOUNCE”. When the stick hits the drum, the 8rd and 4th fingers (which stay close together) drop down away from the stick a little, as the hand and forearm make a slight turn in. When the stick comes back up, the third and fourth fingers come back to the stick and help in the lifting of the stick. tourer RRRR LLEL RRRR Te eek The Roll still made with one stick. Section 3 No time signature is given in section 3. Regardless of the number of notes in a measure, each note is played in the same speed. We are primarily interested in the notes being played very evenly. For example: if one bar has six notes and another bar has three notes, the bar with six notes will take twice as long to play. I repeat, each note in every bar is played in the same speed. Count while playing these notes in this manner: 1234 123456 1234 123456 12845678 COUNT ALOUD. Counting evenly and playing evenly are most important in these exercises. The notes on the TOP LINE are for the RIGHT HAND ONLY and the notes on the BOTTOM LINE are for the LEFT HAND ONLY. Then drop the accent. = 3 Zz Zz z 13, Each week, as a new exercise is given to a pupil, the preceding exercises are al- so to be practiced.
