Most children are aware of many different kinds of graphs

such as a bar graph, pie graph and line graph. The lower
abilities children have limited knowledge of what a graph is.
Students do not know how to articulate the purpose of a graph
and do not understand what data is.
Students are unsure of the different properties of a graph and
how to display data.

Key Teaching Strategies

Notes

Lots of group discussion is important in this unit. students need to understand

WHY they are collecting and displaying data and what the point is of it all.
focus groups are important for the students who will really struggle with
aspects of this unit, particularly students that find it difficult to rule lines and
use rulers.
there must be discussion of tasks but lots of modeling from both the teacher
and other students to allow different kinds of learners to benefit from the
instruction.

Evaluation of the Unit

Monitoring (Assessment)
This unit was a huge success.

in class discussion
loved coming up with their own data collection questions.

Discuss tally marks and model them on the
board, getting different children up to

Discuss making a graph for our favourite
colours. discuss the need for only a few
options to fit on our graph and how you
can only vote once. complete a class tally
of five favourite colours.
Discuss other elements of a graph (title,
key etc)
Discuss DATA. what data could we collect
rom other classes? how could we word the
questions? what options could we give the
students? how could we make sure that it is
accurate and fair?
Break into pairs and brainstorm data to
collect and what to call their data

Pre service Teachers Evaluation (including teaching skill development)

I have become much more confident with my maths lessons.
I find it very difficult to remember to assess during lessons, but this is so valuable and a skill that I am focusing on and feel that I have improved
on during this unit.
Student management was not even slightly an issue during this unit and I feel that when students know a lesson is well prepared and hands on,
they are much less likely to get off track and much around.
I enjoyed teaching this unit and believe I got a lot out of the kids.

Mentor Teachers Evaluation

Meg, you have come such a long way this year!
I love how you always use focus groups, even when it is difficult!
I am happy to see you using checklists during class, and I love the time that you saved for reflection during these lessons.
Your time management of lessons is wonderful and you never seem rushed anymore.
Even having kids coming and going for intervention and photos did not throw you at all, you go with the flow and are so comfortable with the
students.
Well done on a great unit!
