Student Comments:
a) Our patients family was very
worked up and concerned about
that patient so we spent much of
the day comforting and explaining
things to the patient and the family.
b) It was challenging to communicate
effectively with the family because
some of the questions were hard to
answer, but I did my best to answer
things therapeutically as to not
escalate the situation.
c) We gave the patient an incentive
spirometer after extubation so they
could fill their lungs and increase
positive outcomes after intubation
d) I felt uncomfortable with all the
questions coming from the patients
daughter that was a nurse in
Chicago, but I made sure to be in
the room often to alleviate worry
and make up for what I was lacking
in answers
e) As stated above I did the best I
could to be effective. If there were
questions that I was unable to
answer, I found someone who could

was, I tried to be empathetic of the
situation they were in and do my

c) I appreciate being told when Im
doing something wrong. I was
about to draw up dilaudid without a
filter needle and the nurse
corrected me. Ill most likely not do
that again
d) I have multiple areas I need to
improve on. I need to be more
confident so I dont get intimidated

e) I had to embrace the fact that my
patients daughter was a nurse and
that she was going to have a lot to
say about his care and the way we
were doing things
f) I did my best to perform safe quality
care. I feel uneasy in the critical
care setting, but am sure to ask for
help when I dont know how to do
something.

Insights gained:
I learned how to better manage care of two patients. I watched a patient be extubated, and learned how to answer
questions about the process. The family members of a patient were having trouble getting along, so I learned how to
manage a situation like that, and feel the nurse had a lot of great insight on what to do in those types of situations. We
communicated clearly to both members that that type of behavior was not beneficial to the patients healing and that they
would be asked to leave if they continued their behavior.
