Teaching Philosophy
An ideal nurse educator is the one who finds inspiration during the journey from novice to
expert. Every situation encountered with patients, families and coworkers has inspired my
interest in teaching. My philosophy is shaped on what was influential during my personal
journey from student to nurse, my personal experience with cultural diversity, and the love for
the profession. During my nursing journey, I have been inspired by professors who displayed a
love for educating nursing students. Their desire for teaching was contagious and left me wanting
to do the same. My philosophy of nursing is strongly linked to my lifes experiences and how I
will use them to empower novice-nurses to apply their classroom learning to actual patient care.
Writing my nursing philosophy for the first time forced me to evaluate my own goals and beliefs.
As a nurse educator I will strive to help student nurses to gain self- awareness, and cultural
competency. I will provide an open classroom where student nurses could bring their inquiries to
discuss with their peers. Students nurses will conduct and guide the discussion; the exercise will
generate thoughts inviting them to navigate at their own rate the movement from novice to
expert. Benner provides a framework that supports lifelong learning for nurses, thus is applicable
to nursing practice, research, and education. Her theory relates the use of both theoretical and
practical knowledge. As I looked back on the years I have practiced, I continue to model
Benners philosophy, and I will continue to use it in my efforts to educate novice-nurses in to the
transformational leaders of tomorrow.
Transformational leadership is a theory that was developed by James McGregor Burns in 1978. He developed
this theory to further address the aspects of an organization that lead to success, encourage enthusiasm among
an organization's employees, and identify the values employees place on their work.

Since the years of Nightingale, self awareness is an important part in nursing practice. It
influences nurse-patient relationships, and is identified as a factor in empathy leading to gentler
way of being. The use of reflection has helped me to develop self- awareness. To facilitate the
development of the process of reflection and reflective learning many professional educators and
professors engage students in writing reflective journals as one of the learning activities (ConnerGreene, 2000; Patton, Wood & Agarenzo, 1997; Woodward, 1998). Writing a journal will force
the students to question on what they see, and hear and how the experience influences their
journey on becoming nurses, who can display self-awareness and use their experience to perfect
their patient care. Keeping a reflective journal will enrich self-awareness and will enhance future
actions. Reflective journals will help the student nurses express their learning in a personal way.
As an educator my goal is to find techniques to facilitate student nurses understanding of the
profession and ways to enhance their practice.
Doctor Madeleine Leininger says, culturally specific nursing care must be customized to
fit with the patient's own cultural values, beliefs, traditions, practices, and lifestyle (Leininger,
2002; Leininger & McFarland, 2002, 2006). Todays society is constantly changing. I am an
emigrant from Colombia, and I have personally experienced cultural diversity. I am not only an
emigrant but I have lived in New York for over twenty years, where I have cared for
multicultural patients and I have formed my practice to fit their lifestyle. As a nurse educator, I
will educate nursing students on how to embrace diversity. In the classroom, I will have open
discussions about my Latin culture, and my personal experiences with other cultures; these will
convey the importance that cultural competent nurses are essential for nursing practice.
Incorporating a globally focused curriculum will provide nursing students in submerging

themselves in a global community. Early in their careers, I will expose nursing student to a
culturally diverse group of patients educating nursing students who are well informed and better
equipped to engage and serve a multicultural community. Their exposure to other cultures and
beliefs will start by learning about my Latin background and what Latinos expect from a nurse.
I will continually evolve as an educator. In nursing, education needs to be a continuum
and my knowledge of teaching and learning is equally important to be an active participant in our
own profession. I am enthusiastic about passing on my tools to someone else to utilize and to
improve in usage. I again will begin a trajectory moving from novice to an expert educator. I am
planning on having an enthusiastic and humorous classroom, one that will invite student nurses
to approach me with any concerns and they will leave my classroom eager to be leaders with an
active voice to participate in politics involving health care, education and research.
