1: Unit Outcomes
The lessons developed over this unit aim to support the attainment of a number of
outcomes from the NSW English Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum, (Board of
Studies, 2012) for stage 3, year five / six students, as detailed below. The two focus
strands from the Australian Curriculum (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and
Reporting Authority, 2014) are Literature and Literacy.
2. interpret picture books, comic strips and sequences of digital images which
do not contain written text
3. use comprehension strategies to interpret and analyse information and
ideas, comparing content from a variety of textual sources including media
and digital texts (ACELY1703, ACELY1713)
4. recognise how aspects of personal perspective influence responses to text
5. summarise a text and evaluate the intended message or theme
6. analyse how text structures and language features work together to meet the
purpose of a text (ACELY1711)
7. recognise how grammatical features help to build meaning in texts,
including reference links and adverbial and adjectival phrases
2. select some more challenging language features, literary devices (eg irony,
humour) and grammatical features (eg modality) to engage and influence an
audience

Thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about
information and ideas and identifies connections between texts when
responding to and composing texts (EN3-7C)
Indicators:
1. experiment with others' imaginative texts by changing aspects such as place,
characters, rhythm, mood, sound effects and dialogue
