My design methodology was to allow people to interact with the architecture of the building but in a more
interesting and connected manner so I designed a parasite for the Red Parrot nightclub that transforms the dull
lining up process of entering the club into a more enjoyable and interactive experience. This design is iterated in a
playground inspired parasite that employs traditional playground equipment (slides and towers) to create a
memorable experience for adults that dips into their fun childhood memories.
I chose to create a sculptural feature to wrap around the building that evoke memories of childhood, with the
tunnelling tubes reminiscent of the crawl-through tubes on playgrounds. I chose to design a lighting feature
integrated with the tubes which double as street lighting on the darkened streets of North bridge. The slide is
made from thick clear perspex which allows the patrons to admire the view of the city as they slide down into the
building.
Another feature is the glass bottomed shallow pool on the roof which acts as a skylight filtering light into the
darkened room below. The water filters the light from above to create moving light patterns on the walls adding to
the cool atmosphere of the location. The water and glass floor also allows patrons who are interacting with the
parasite walking around to look down into the room they will soon enter.
The use of glass and other clear materials throughout the parasite allows the beauty of the building to not be
distracted from. The parasite is light weight and neutrally coloured as it wraps around the building as to not
interfere with the viewing of the surrounding artwork. The lookouts of each of the towers allow the users to view the
city and surrounding areas without interference- with great views over the city and the Perth arena.
I wanted to create a new way of lining up that gives back to the original building by making it more noticeable and
making it into a place that allows people to enjoy and have fun on an otherwise dull part of an evening out in North
Bridge.
