We must get beyond the shock and we as women create an

Early Detection Plan

How the American Cancer Society Fights Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States (other than
skin cancer). But millions of women are surviving the disease thanks in part to early
detection and improvements in treatment. The American Cancer Society is actively fighting
breast cancer by helping women get tested to find breast cancer earlier, and helping them
understand their treatment options and cope with the physical and emotional side effects.

Cancer Walk

Statistics show that for women in the U.S.

breast cancer death rates are higher than
those for any other cancer,
besides lung cancer.

Over 50 members of The Bessie Mae

Women and Family Health Center made
strides against Breast Cancer at the
American Cancer Societys walk on
October 19th. Over 35,000 people walked
celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness
Month.

In 2014, an estimated
232,670 new cases of
invasive breast cancer
were expected to be
diagnosed in women in the
U.S., along with 62,570
new cases of non-invasive
breast cancer.

According to the American

Cancer Society, about 1 in 8
U.S. women (about 12%)
will develop invasive breast
cancer over the course of
her lifetime.

The saying is true.Early Detection Saves

Lives! Dont forget to get your
mammogram. Join with us, the Bessie Mae
Women and Family Health Center as we
continue to stride and continue the fight.
About 85% of breast cancer occur in women
who have no family history of breast cancer.
These occur due to genetic mutations that
happen as a result of the aging process and
life in general, rather than inherited
mutations (American Cancer Society). For

Bessie Mae Women and Family

Health Center brings awareness &
educates the community
concerning the importance of
Breast Cancer

President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bessie Mae Women and Family Health
Center, Esney M. Sharpe speaks candidly with women and men at the National Career
Institute located in East Orange, NJ about the importance of their health and wellness.
During the presentation, Ms. Sharpe began to expound on how early detection of
cancer saves lives and how knowing can save their life.
Breast cancer awareness months gives health care professionals, such as Ms. Sharpe,
the opportunity to encourage women and men to get as much health information as
they possibly can. How annual doctors visits are so vitally important.
The women and men present in the room paid close attention as Ms. Sharpe explained
that a womens risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree
relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer and
about 15% of women who get breast cancer have a family member diagnosed with it.
She went on to explain in 2014, there were more than 2.8 million women with a history
of breast cancer in the United States alone.
Currently, the Bessie Mae Women and Family Health Center offers medical care and
treatment, counseling and health education to the Essex County community Monday
Saturday from 9:00-5:00 p.m. in two locations (soon to add two additional locations).
Each location gives you a warm medical home feel with not a long wait time. For more
