President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bessie Mae Women and Family Health
Center, Esney M. Sharpe speaks candidly with women and men at the National Career
Institute located in East Orange, NJ about the importance of their health and wellness.
During the presentation, Ms. Sharpe began to expound on how early detection of
cancer saves lives and how knowing can save their life.
Breast cancer awareness months gives health care professionals, such as Ms. Sharpe,
the opportunity to encourage women and men to get as much health information as
they possibly can. How annual doctors visits are so vitally important.
The women and men present in the room paid close attention as Ms. Sharpe explained
that a womens risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree
relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer and
about 15% of women who get breast cancer have a family member diagnosed with it.
She went on to explain in 2014, there were more than 2.8 million women with a history
of breast cancer in the United States alone.
Currently, the Bessie Mae Women and Family Health Center offers medical care and
treatment, counseling and health education to the Essex County community Monday
