Class: 5W (Stage 3)

Lesson Plan
Date: 13 of June, 2014
th

Key Learning Area: Mathematics

Time Start:
Finish:

Lesson Topic: Volume and Capacity

Recent Prior Experience:

Students have had experience in estimating, measuring, comparing, converting and recording volume and capacity using formal units.
They have also used technology to investigate mathematical concepts and check their solutions. Students have been given the opportunity
to apply correct and appropriate terminology to describe and link mathematical ideas, check statements for accuracy and explain their
reasoning. By the end of this lesson, students should have an idea of how to select and use the appropriate unit to estimate, measure and
calculate volume and capacity. Students should be able to make connections between volume and capacity.
Syllabus Outcome(s):
-

MA3-1WM: describes and

represents mathematical situations in
a variety of ways using mathematical
terminology and some conventions.
MA3-3WM: gives a valid reason for
supporting one possible solution over
another.
MA3-11MG: selects and uses the
appropriate unit to estimate,
measure and calculate volumes and
capacities, and converts between
units of capacity.

Indicators of Learning:
By the end of this lesson, the students will:

Assessment:
-

Discussions between Ss and T:

to identify students level of
understanding of displacement,
volume and capacity.

Experimentation: observe
students ability to estimate and
measure mL and L.

Work samples: view students

records and drawings of
various objects and their
volume.

1. Select and use appropriate units to

measure the capacities of a variety of
containers.
2. Choose appropriate units of measurement
for volume and capacity (ACMMG108).
3. Connect volume and capacity and their
units of measurement (ACMMG138).
4. Estimate, measure, record and draw
objects and their volume.

Any safety issues to be considered:

Adequate supervision: T will roam around the room to ensure that
Ss are on task and arent having any difficulties and are using the
resources/materials in a safe manner.

Resources:
Variety of containers/boxes: ice cream container, takeaway
container, yoghurt tub, cardboard boxes, etc.
Measuring jugs, cylinders
MAB
Mini and cubic multi links
Plastic syringes

Resources and Organisation:

INTRODUCTION

Capacity
The amount a container can
hold
Volume
Amount of space occupied by a
3D object, measured in cubic
units
Displacement
When an object is fully
submerged under water, it
displaces its own volume or As
an object goes into the water, the
water rises

DEVELOPMENT

T to introduce todays lesson topic: Volume

and Capacity
T will ask Ss:
What is volume and capacity?
Do they link/connect with each other? If
yes, how so?
What is displacement?
T will demonstrate displacement by
demonstrating using a variety of containers,
water and objects.
T will begin to place certain objects into the
large measuring cup and will instruct Ss to
look carefully at what happens to water.
T will ask Ss:
What just happened to the water?
Why do you think this happened?
What does it mean?
How much water raised out of the jug? etc.
T will use mathematical terminology such as
mL and L to describe what is happening
throughout the demonstration.

Variety of
containers/boxes: ice
cream container, takeaway
container, yoghurt tub,
cardboard boxes, etc.
Measuring jugs, cylinders
MAB
Mini and cubic multi links
Plastic syringes

T will introduce activities that the Ss will be

working on in groups. T will describe the 4-5
activities and will ensure Ss that each group
will have a turn at the activity at some point,
it may not be today, etc.
T will divide the Ss into 4 groups of 5.
Activity 1: Small containers, lids, cups etc
and small plastic syringes. Ss would pour
water into these and estimate, measure and
record how much water is in each material.
Activity 2: Big containers, cups, etc and a
large measuring jug. Ss would estimate,
measure and record how much water itll
take to fill these up.
Activity 3: Ss will use the mini cubic multi
links to find the volume of small containers,
etc. Ss will find out how many mini cubic
multi links it takes to fill up the container/s.
The aim of this is for Ss to work towards the
concept of volume. V = l x b x w
Activity 4: Ss will use the cubic multi links to
find the volume of bigger containers, etc. Ss
will find out how many cubic multi links it
takes to fill up the container/s. The aim of
this is for Ss to work towards the concept of
volume. V = l x b x w
During these tasks, Ss are expected to
estimate, measure, record and draw their
findings / the volume of the objects into their

T to conclude the lesson by asking the Ss to

pack away the activity that theyre currently
on.
T will assure Ss that we will continue with
these activities in our next Maths lesson.

Ss to pack away the

activity that they were
currently participating in.
Ss to put their Maths
workbook away into the
Maths box.
