I am interested in applying for the position as a Graduate Ocean/Mechanical Engineer as posted on

http://www.makai.com/a-employment.htm. I am currently finishing my Masters Degree in Ocean
Engineering at Florida Atlantic University in Dania Beach, Florida graduating in May 2010.

I am qualified for this position because of my graduate studies in Ocean Engineering. I have a mechanical
engineering internship at the Agoyan hydroelectric power plant in Baños, Ecuador. The intensive
coursework as an undergraduate physics student and engineering work experience has shaped me into a
diverse individual who can adapt to any challenging engineering task.
For example, during two years working as a graduate research assistant, I worked on the design,
construction, assembly, test, and analysis of a surface propeller test apparatus. I initially participated in the
development of the apparatus’ mechanical components using CAD. Following design completion, I learned
how to operate equipment such as CNC, lathe, table saw and milling machines at the University’s machine
shop to fabricate these mechanical components. I assembled multiple mechanical components together and
quickly learned this task is far from trivial. This process gave me valuable experience as a mechanical
designer.
After testing the apparatus, I wrote the computer algorithm that automatically analyzed the gathered data.
Additionally, I wrote the full report documenting the processes of the project which in turn strengthened
my technical communication skills. Finally, I learned to work and provide the best solutions for the problem
independently because the entire project took place under minimal supervision of my advisor.

I am interested in many of the projects you have in progress and particularly in the area of renewable energy
which is why I am applying for the Graduate Ocean/Mechanical Engineer program. The experience gained
during my Master thesis project and the qualifications described in my resume assure me that I am the
perfect candidate for this position. I hope that I can tell you more about myself and learn more about what
