Recent Prior Experience

Students have been studying the novel Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, as well as the film and The Tales of Beedle the Bard for two weeks. All
students have read the novel completely and seen the film so have a thorough understanding of the events that take place. Students have been exposed to wide
range of text types including newspapers and magazines.

INTRODUCTION
- What is The Daily Prophet?

- Teacher greets students and only begins lesson after capturing


their full attention. Students are gathered on the floor and
on the booths facing the board.
- Teacher introduces the lesson, stating that students will be
writing newspaper articles to the Daily Prophet.
- Teacher reminds students of what the Daily Prophet is by
making the connection with a similar media outlet that they
are aware of e.g. Daily Telegraph.

- Teacher displays task on smartboard and briefly explains
requirements:
- Write a newspaper article for The Daily Prophet
reporting on any event from the novel, except the
break in at Gringotts.
- You may use the novel and a dictionary to assist you.
- Re-read your article focusing on text structure and
descriptive and emotive language. Can you add or
change words to better describe the event and engage
your audience? Also pay attention to the design/layout
of your article. What images will you use?
- Swap articles with someone and edit each other work,
particularly focusing on their text structure and use of
descriptive, figurative and emotive language. Make
suggestions of how they may be able to further
captivate their audience.
- Once your article has been edited, type up your article
using the computers/laptops including the changes
your peer has made.
- Ensure your final version includes an image and has
been created using a newspaper layout.
- Re-read your article again to ensure that it flows
- Teacher may provide students with a template if
desired
- Students who are comfortable with starting may go and begin,
students who are unsure remain behind for some further
instruction and scaffolding.
- If students are struggling to choose an event, teacher may
suggest examples such as to report on a quidditch game,

Harry Potter arriving at Hogwarts, Halloween, Norbert,


final battle scene, dead unicorn and sighting or Voldemort
on forbidden forest
- Once students feel confident with doing the task, they may go
and continue working on it independently, those who are
still struggling with the task stay with teacher for further
guidance. These students work together with the teacher to
create a follow up/extended newspaper article about the
Break in at Gringotts.
- Students continue working on their articles according to steps
on Smartboard
- Teacher monitors behaviour and assists students where
required, questions students to stimulate students thinking.
Extension task: Early finishes can create a second newspaper
article on an event which was not mentioned in either the book
or the film but still relating to the wizarding world of Harry
Potter.
CLOSURE

- Revision of newspapers
- Self assessment

- Brief over view of lesson. What elements did they include in


their article and why? What changes did their peers suggest
to make it better? How did students go? Two stars and a
wish.
- Articles are collected and made into a Daily Prophet
newspaper
- Those who didnt finish are to do so for homework
- Students tidy room and get ready for their music lesson with
Ms. Silva
