GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT:
USE RELATIVE PRONOUNS
Some sentences include a clause that gives information about a person or
thing. These relative clauses are introduced by a relative pronoun.
Example:
The story is about a man who was taken from his home in Africa.

Who, whom, and whose are relative pronouns that connect a clause to a
person in the sentence.
Example:
This man, whose name was Joseph Cinqué, fought for his freedom.

You can use that to connect a relative clause to a person or a thing.


Examples:
The man that the slave traders shipped to Cuba was sold to the
Spaniards

The speech that Cinqué gave impressed the jurors.

ACHIEVING THAT GOAL.
COMPOUND AND COMPLEX
SENTENCES
A complex sentence has an independent clause and one
or more dependent clauses. The clauses are joined by
a subordinating conjunction. The independent clause
expresses a complete thought. The dependent clause
does not.
Example: Meat eaters are fast runners because they
must chase their prey.

If the dependent clause comes first, use a comma after it.

Example: Because they must chase their prey, meat


eaters are fast runners.
VERB PRACTICE
Identify Verbs: Find each verb in the sentences Tell what kind of verb
(linking verb, helping verb, action verb, main verb) it is.
