Principals Letter: Dr. Barriett Smith

October 14, 2015
Dear Parents,
We are in the sixth week of
school. For our newest parents, welcome to our Raider
Nation, your childs home
away from home. It has been
a whirl wind beginning.
Schedule changes, balancing
of classes, counselor visitations and many, many more.
This is what school looks like
in those first few weeks. We
are now at the point of settling
in for the remainder of the
school year. We are working
hard to make our Mission
Statement a reality, To provide a challenging, comprehensive education for student
to become model citizens in a
diverse and global society.
We ask that you keep on top
of your children. Please
check Grade Speed frequently throughout the week.
Question your child about
what is happening in the
classroom. If you are not
seeing some form of homework, ask the question, Why
not? It is high school and
they will have homework.
This is important. The transition from Middle School to
High School is not an easy
one. There is a lot to learn in
making this change.
If there are issues which need
to be resolved, please contact
the teacher first. Most issues
can be solved at the lowest
level, starting with the teacher. Please look for ways to
build that relationship beKHS September-October 2015

tween you, your student and

his/her teacher. I am asking
all parents to stay engaged
with their childs performance
in school. I know that once a
student arrives in high school
there is a tendency to believe
that the student no longer
needs assistance. Dont believe it. This is the time for
parents to remain vigilant.
To our senior parents,
remember that it is all about
the GPA; your child will have
to have a 2.0 or better in order to graduate. Keep your
student focused on finishing
this school year with their best
effort. Sustaining that effort
throughout the school year
will only lead to future success. There are plenty of areas for distractions, but remind
your student of the purpose of
high school, preparing them
for college, career or just
leaving your household. As
you have been doing for the
previous three years, stay in
close contact with the teacher. If you have senior questions, contact Ms. Joshua,
who is the senior counselor.
Extracurricular events are in
full swing. Please come out
and show your support.
Homecoming will be the
weekend of October 23-24.
Bonfire, sports activities and
dance are all slated for that
weekend. Show your support
by wearing your red and
white. Booster club and
PTSO are both ramping up
the spirit sales and support.

If you have not heard, Jasmin

A. is the DoDEA Womens
Champion for the 2015 season in golf. Congratulations
to her, her team, coach and
family!
The School Advisory Committee will be voting on October
30 for new SAC positions.
SAC will hold its first official
meeting, November 3, 2015
@ 1645. We will be planning
for the remainder of the
school year with solving issues which are important to
all stakeholders. If you have
concerns, or even if you do
not have a concern, this is a
place in which you may have
your voice heard. Please get
involved.
We look forward to an awesome year. If you need
something, please let us
know. If we are doing something right, let us know. If you
see areas where improvements can be made, give us
the feedback. We are all in a
learning mode.
Sincerely,

Dr. Barriett Smith

Open House started with a meet-andgreet in the stadium next to the school. General DeBlieck spoke to parents in the KHS
Stadium. Every parents goal is to make
sure their children get a good education. It
starts with involvement, he emphasized.
And thats not easy. Many parents have
long working hours, making it difficult to stay
abreast of what children are doing in school.
However, parents need to make that extra
effort. Today is the first day to step off on the
right foot, he said. After General
DeBliecks inspirational speech, parents
moved through the classrooms in 10-minute
intervals following their childrens schedule
to meet all their teachers. Also, some of the
clubs and community organizations were set
up in an information fair in the cafeteria so
parents could learn about other opportunities. "The open house is a chance for parents to meet teachers and find out whats

going on in the classrooms, said Dr. Barriett
Smith, the high schools principal. Its an opportunity for people to look at things at the
school.
Smith also stressed the importance of
parents continuing to stay engaged by attending the two sets of parent-teacher conferences scheduled for later in the school year.
One tool the parents can use is the
website GradeSpeed, DeBlieck stated.
GradeSpeed is a web-based program that
enables parents to view grade and attendance data online. Teachers use the grade
book portion of the site to enter assignments,
grades, and to maintain grade calculations.
Teachers are also able to email progress reports to parents through GradeSpeed. Parents can register for an account at
www.dodea.gradespeed.net.

Two KHS students performed in Junie B. Jones The Musical at KMC Onstage August 28-30
and September 11-13. The musical was about a girl in the first grade who always seems to get
in trouble. She always finds a way to fix her problems and have everything her way.

Jonee H.
Who did you play? Bobbie Jean Piper (Piper)
How would you describe your character? I would describe her
as an energetic bunny who loves rainbows and being
around her friends.
What was your favorite part during the play? My favorite was
Junie doing the gospel part. I actually sang with her.
Would you do another play? Not right now. School and work
are the most important things on my mind right now.
Piper rides the bus home from school
Christopher C.

Who did you play? Sheldon Potts

How would you describe your character?
I would describe my character as a typical
nerd but kind of on the trying-to-be cool side
in order to get friends.
Christopher C. plays the part of Sheldon

What was your favorite part during the play? My

favorite part would be the Show and Tell
scene because it has fun choreography
and we got to play around on stage.
Would you do another play? Of Course!

Choir Starts off on the Right Note
By: Megan F.
Students far and wide
had heard of the choir class.
They had seen the posters
and their friends schedules.
Some were so interested,
they joined as well, giving the
choir over a hundred students
by the end of the school year.
However, the previous teacher, Ms. Cooper, moved away
over the following summer,
leaving the class to either be

dropped or picked up by another teacher.

Luckily, somebody who
had been working with the
choir as an assistant managed
to secure the job, saving choir
as a class. Her name is Ms.
Moreno. Moreno started her
musical experience at a very
young age, giving her well
over a decade of experience.

Page 8) KHS Newsletter September-October 2015

So far, the class has

started out at around 40 students. Moreno has commented
on the number last years class
had, and she hopes that the current class will surpass that number. Choir class is open and welcoming to any students interested, though its recommended
you join as soon as possible, as
the first performance is on
Homecoming night.

New Cadet Orientation

Top right: Victoria S. leading some new cadets through fun icebreakers to start off an awesome year!

By: Cadet TSgt Castellanos

On September 12, the
GR-081st held their New Cadet Orientation. We had a
great turn out with over 50
new cadets. These cadets
were very enthusiastic and
motivated to learn about the
program. The day began at
0830 with the Opening Ceremony which consisted of the
raising of the U.S. flag. The
flight commanders then took
control of their flights and
they were ready to start an
educational and fun-filled
day.
All cadets passed
through five stations: Drill,
Team Building, Physical
Training, Uniform, and Core
Values. At the Drill station,
Cadet Captain Beard taught
the new cadets the basics of
drill such as the facing movements and marching. She
surprised the cadets by putting their military bearing to
the test, shouting orders like
a drill instructor in the movies.
In the end, she had inspired

KHS September-October 2015

many cadets to say they would

try out for the GR-081sts award
winning drill team.
Flights were split into two
teams and competed in various
games at the Team Building station. Cadet Technical Sergeant
Dragon tested their teamwork
and communication skills. He
even got one of our instructors
and group commander to participate.
At the Physical Training
(P.T.) station, cadets formed a
circle around Cadet Master Sergeant Trotter and Cadet First
Lieutenant Rodriguez and
learned the different exercises
done during a P.T. class.
Cadet Captain Sahli
briefed the new cadets on the
uniform regulations at the Uniform station. The cadets
learned how and when to wear
the various AFJROTC uniforms.

the cadets what Integrity

First, Service Before Self,
and Excellence In All We Do
means. Cadets were given
real life scenarios and discussed how the core values
applied to those situations.
Cadet Commander
Victoria S. said, The new
cadet orientation was a
huge success! The instructors and I both agree that we
have a great group of AS1s
this year. The cadets
seemed eager to learn, and
we are excited to have a
great year with all of them. I
also want to thank the staff,
because without them it
wouldnt have been possible.

MUN Prepares New Students
By. Megan F.
For those interested in the national relations of the world and
global issues, Model United
Nations (MUN) may just be the
thing for you! The first meeting
took place on the first Friday of
the school year, bringing in a
crowd of well over 20 students.
In the following meetings
on subsequent Fridays,

Standiford and MUN officer

Gemma Lovett taught the students basics of parliamentary procedure, proper etiquette, and things to expect
when attending The Hague
International Model United
Nations (THIMUN) conference. For example. they will
need to prepare for this
years topic: Sustainable Urbanization, which includes
issues such as pollution and
womens property rights
around the world.

After Sep.21, Standiford will be sending out for

the MUNs country assignments. For this to happen,
every MUN participant must
provide a $300 deposit, but
this does not cover other
fees such as lodging for the
January conference. Thus,
MUN will be fundraising with
things such as selling pizza
on College Night and
smoothies at the Raider
Caf every Wednesday.

The Future Envisioned by KHSs Student Government

By: Matthew A.
In an exclusive interview with the president of the
senior class (Joseph O.), as
well as part of student government, I got some insight
on the future for our school.
Throughout the interview, Joseph had a positive attitude
and mind set about the future
KHS September-October 2015

of our school. He wishes to

make all classes successful in
terms of finance for the next few
years. He also wants the student
body and senior class to have
the year they deserve and a
strong finish to their high school
career. In terms of the members
on the student government
team, Joseph feels great about
this years team and believes

they have what they need to

get the job done. He believes that if he and the team
work hard and strong together, it will truly be an awesome year here at Kaiserslautern High school. The
president added that he has
already set plans in motion
for graduation for our Class
of 2016!

Are you interested in electronics or robots? This year Mr. Putnam is hosting the Robotics club! Students who join Robotics Club will learn how to manage
projects, program robots, build robots, use servos and work with others. Students
will learn to overcome lots of challenges and get to experience a lot of fun and
awesomeness says Mr. Putnam. Students will be able to build
and program any robot they want. This year Mr. Putnam is
looking forward to building two full robots, but to do that he
needs members- so please join! Students with little to no experience can join or if you would like to be near a robot then
this club might just be for you. However not limited to only the
classroom, Robotics Club has many competitions with other
students within Europe. More info on competitions:

Our Raiders football team participated in a live scrimmage on Sep. 11 and Sep.
12 along with two other teams, Wiesbaden
and Ramstein. Friday's scrimmage had taken place in Wiesbaden where the varsity
played (led by Coach A. Scalise)
The overall performance was great
especially since that was the first time with
live contact said Coach Scalise when
asked about Fridays performance at Wiesbaden. The Raiders had only been practicing for two weeks not including Raider
Week. The scrimmage was a success, but

What made you want to join cheer? I joined

cheer because its always exciting for me and its
really fascinating plus Ive been doing it since
second grade.
How do you feel about being the captain for
varsity? I think its an amazing opportunity. Being captain on varsity allows me to be a leader in
something I love doing and enjoying it with an
amazing group of people.
Whats your favorite part about being on
cheer? My favorite part is going to basketball
games and cheering at competition.

Kayley
How do you feel about being the captain for JV? I
like being JV captain because I like the team we have
this year and its just always a good way to make more
friends and I think that weve made a lot of progress
together as a team.
What made you want to join cheer? I wanted to join
cheer because I thought it would be a fun new way to
meet new people and I thought it would be so fun to
have a sport to join into and to learn cheers, dances,
team bonding, and to be part of the spirit of the school.
Do you think you would want to keep doing cheer
once your out of high school? Yeah I think it would
be fun to continue cheer outside of high school. It all
depends on what I plan on studying or what college I go
to, but I definitely think it would be a fun experience.

Our Raiders Golf team had their first game on September 17 against Stuttgart, Ramstein, and Wiesbaden.
It was a nice, sunny day for golf and missing school,
says Chris R. Everyone at the tournament was friendly
and had a good attitude.
The coaches are great they have great tips and great
knowledge on the game and how to play it- their tips actually added a few points to my score! says Chris R.
Nicholas N. explains, Golf isnt just a game you play but a
team building and character building sport.
