Bock, Peter. "The Emergence of Artificial Intelligence: Learning to Learn" AI Magazine (Fall
2015): Vol 36 No 3. Web. 19 Oct. 2015.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence publishes AI Magazine to

bring forth the research and discussion talked about by current experts in AI. In the fall 2015
volume, expert in the field of AI, learning systems Peter Bock discusses the effectiveness of
having an AI learn. Peter Bock is currently the chief science officer at ALISA systems
incorporated and was a professor of engineering at George Washington University for 41 years.
Prior to this he worked on the Apollo project.
Bocks definition of an AI is as follows; Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a human
made machine (an automaton) to emulate or simulate human methods for the deductive and
inductive acquisition and application of knowledge and reason. (180). He insists that while the
technology to create the hardware of a human-like Artificial Intelligence is within our reach in
the next ten to fifteen years, the software is the problem. Even when programming only 10% of
the capacity, it would take one programmer 100 million work hours to complete. He also insists
that it is theoretically possible to scan a persons brain and simply bus that data straight over to
the AI brain. This alternative is likely, but the technology used is nowhere near where we as a
society are currently at. Finally, he puts forward that if the AI is outfitted with sensory devices,
much like we have eyes and ears, that the system will learn enough to achieve human level
intelligence in a mere 12 years. Bock says that this is most likely the right solution, and possibly
the only true solution Artificial Intelligence. (181)

Other Quotes:
Only one problem remains: I havent the faintest, foggiest notion of how to build such a device,
let alone what principles it would employ, or even how to propose a research project to
investigate its feasibility. If someone does, more power to him. (181)

Every day babies are born, grow up, and in the process acquire a full spectrum of intelligence.
How do they do it? The answer, of course, is that they learn. (181)

Personally, I find it rather more arrogant to assert that our intelligence capacity is infinite than
to accept its finite limitations. (180)

Analysis: This article was extremely useful in a sense as to a good solution to creating Artificial
Intelligence and is very well supported. Bock not only explains what needs to be done, but even
goes into detail as to how it could be done as well. The article is going to be very helpful for my
inquiry question based on Artificial Intelligence.
