Lesson 2.4: Story Problems

3.1.2 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers;
represent multiplication and division in various ways; solve
real-world and mathematical problems using arithmetic.
3.1.2.2 Use addition and subtraction to solve-real world
and mathematical problems involving whole numbers. Use
various strategies, including the relationship between
addition and subtraction, the use of technology, and the
context of the problem to assess the reasonableness of
results.
To help students use patterns in operation strategies to
solve real-world mathematical problems.
Students will be able to identify and use numbers within a
word problem to solve real-world addition and subtraction
equations.
Becoming familiar with the terms: part, total, addend, sum,
and difference.
Materials needed:
Whiteboards
Whiteboard markers
Math journal pages 36-38
Introduce examples of real-life
story problems. Share with the
class how using math will help us
in real-life situations. When I was
a third grader, I used to wonder,
Why do we practice adding and
subtracting so much! Now, I
understand! I use addition and
subtraction in my everyday life.
Give examples.
Have students share ideas of

Students will think and

share ideas of where

where they might use real-life

mathematical equations. Who
can share some ways that we use
numbers to solve problems at
home?
Introduce the 6 Steps for Solving
Story Problems, having student
volunteers read each one.
Solve first slide while thinking out
loud and using the 6 steps to
model for students how to solve a
story problem. To begin this
problem, I have to start with Step
1: Read the problem carefully.
Continue throughout all steps.
Go through the remaining slides.
We are going to try a few
together. Asking students to
help with each part (step) of the
problem.

Informal
Assessment

Tell students to turn to page 36 in

math journal. There, they will find
questions in the same format.
Have students work
independently on math journal
pages 36-37.
When students spin their
whiteboards to show their work,
the teacher will observe to
determine which students need
extra assistance. Look for
students who are not setting up
the correct number sentence.

they use adding and

subtracting in real life.
Students read Steps
for Solving Story
Problems.

Students solve
questions individually
on whiteboards and
volunteer to share
their work and
answers.
Students take out
Everyday Math Journal
and complete pages
36-37.

Closure

Students who were determined to

need extra guidance during
whiteboard work will be pulled to
back table.

Select students will

bring whiteboards to
back table.

Teacher will facilitate a concrete

Apple Tree activity.

Two students will pick

apples off of the tree.
Then, they will write
an addition number
sentence to find the
total number of apples
picked. They will use
the apple
manipulatives to count
all the apples
together.

Reinforce focused work behaviors.

Instruct students to look for realworld math problems when they
go home.

Students will write on

their take home
sharing sheet to find
other math problems
outside of school.
