LEARNING OUTCOMES

State the scales and units used in IR, 13C NMR and MS spectroscopy
Identify the presence of key functional groups from the position and
shapes of the peaks they form on an IR spectrum
Identify the fingerprint region of an IR spectrum and say how it is used
Identify the number of carbon environments in a given molecule, and the
number of carbon environments revealed by a 13C NMR spectrum
Recognise peaks produced by calibration standards in an NMR spectrum
Discuss the cause of the difference in chemical shift for carbon atoms
in different environments
Explain how a MS spectrum is produced, identify (where appropriate)
the M+ peak and explain its significance, and be able to draw some
conclusions about some of the peaks on the spectrum
Explain the significance of the isotopic abundances of different
elements in mass spectra
Use combinations of MS, IR and NMR data to identify a compound and
link aspects of its structure to specific peaks on these spectra
