Electronic chassis controls

Objectives

• Temperature control
• Cruise control systems
• Anti-theft systems
• Audio systems

Semiautomatic systems

• Manual input of temperature and mode

• Input is received as a voltage signal to the bcm
• An actuator controlled by the bcm varies the blend door location and blower
speed, based on input from sensors

Common components

• Control assembly
○ Sends a variable voltage signal to the module
• Programmer
○ Operates actuators based on input info
• Actuators
○ Electric or vacuum controlled motors/diaphragms that move the blend
doors to control cabin temperature

Electronic automatic systems

• Usually has a self-diagnostic mode

• Blower speed is variable
• Driver can input precise temperature
• Temperature is sampled & readjusted several times a second
• May include dual climate control

Sensors

• Ambient temperature
• Sun load
• Evaporator temperature
• May have an aspirator tube connected to the vent air-stream to draw cabin
air past the in-car sensor

Outputs
• Blend air door actuator
• Heater core flow control valve and solenoid
• Mode door actuator
• Recirculation / air inlet door actuator
• Compressor clutch control

BCM – controlled system operation

• The BCM receives input information from the climate control head and
several sensors and switches

Dual climate control

• Infrared sensor measures surface temperature of vehicle occupants

• Two separate blend doors and used to regulate temperature between
passengers and driver

EATC system Diagnostic

• Always use manufactures service procedures to diag. problems

• Perform functional test to see what parts of the system are operating
correctly
• Use system self-diagnostics to extract fault codes and test codes

Cruise control

• Control module
• Control switch
• Brake and clutch switches
• Vehicle speed input
• Vacuum release switch
• Servo motor

Electromagnetically

• Converts electrical signals from switches and sensors into mechanical

movement
• Engine vacuum is applied to a servo at variable rates
• The servo is connected to the throttle plates w/ a sliding cable or chain

Servo motor

• Combines a transducer (module) and a servo into one unit

• One vacuum line is connected to the servo and movement of the vacuum
diaphragm is controlled by internal VSV’s
