Full Name: John Popken
Title of Project: St. Xavier Golf Team Assistant Coach
Thematic Area(s): Leadership and Community Engagement
Expected Start Date: August 1, 2016
Expected End Date: October 20, 2016
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
For my self designed honors experience, I plan to become an assistant coach for the St. Xavier High School Golf Team.
As an assistant coach, I would help out with coordinating matches between other schools, leading practices once a week,
and being the designated head coach for matches when the head coach could not be present. This experience would mean
a lot to me because I was on the golf team at St. Xavier for four years. I am a firm believer that I am the man I am today
because of the numerous coaches that I had during my time on the team. They not only taught me about golf, but more
importantly they taught me about how to act like a gentleman on and off of the golf course. One of my main goals for this
experience is to help the current coaches and make their jobs easier. They all have full time jobs outside of coaching golf
and need help with organizing players for each match and sending out emails to the team making sure that the players
know what matches they are playing in during the week. Another one of my goals is to be a positive mentor for the
players on the team. As a recent graduate of St. Xavier, I could be a great help to them when it comes to balancing school,
family, golf, friends, and life after high school in college. The timeline for this experience would be from August 1, 2016
to October 2016. Each week, I would be spending roughly ten to twelve hours coaching. I would be the designated coach
for roughly two to three matches a week. These three matches could be any combination of nine hole matches or eighteen
hole matches. In addition to the matches against other schools, I would help out during one practice a week which would
last roughly an hour and a half.

2. Experience Advisor
Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.
Kenneth E. Schon
(Assistant Coach)
513-607-1811
I have chosen Ken Schon to be my experience advisor for this experience because he was my favorite coach while I was
at St. Xavier. I had the opportunity to go on multiple out of town tournaments with him and talk to him about almost
everything in our lives. He helped me advance my golfing ability tremendously, focusing mostly on the mental side of the
3
game. Coach Schon always brought a positive attitude to every situation. No matter if I wasnt doing well in school or on
the course, he made me realize that one bad test grade or one bad score is not the end of the world and helped me put my
life into perspective. I hope to model his attitude during this experience as an assistant coach.

4. Academic Resources Connected to the Learning Outcomes
List 1-2 academic resources you plan to use to enhance your understanding of the learning outcomes. Explain how each
resource connects to your learning outcome(s) and helps you execute your experience. Please include the title and
author/creator for each resource.
Note: Academic resources are professional works that can be used to assist your understanding of the topic. Some
examples are books, documentaries, videos, or research journals.
-The book 5 Levels of Leadership would be a very useful tool for me to use to help further my leadership skills. I would
plan to read this before I began coaching so that I would be able to put to use the ideas from the book into my own life.
-There is also a Forbes article titled, Leadership is about emotion. This article points to the ideas of collaboration,
honesty, and kindness. There are many more ideas in this article, but it is centralized around the idea that leaders can be
learned. Even natural born leaders are able to make their leadership skills better, and this article will help me become a
more effective leader and a better coach.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
I plan to reflect during this experience with journals. I will do this because I feel that it is the best way to keep everything
that I have learned in one place. Some questions that I will ask myself include: How have I grown as a person through this
experience? What have the kids taught me about leadership? Am I being a fair coach and promoting the best for all
player? How will I take what I have learned and apply it the rest of my life?

Describe how you plan to actively share what youve taken away from this experience with a targeted audience. Explain
why you chose this specific audience.
Note: While social media can be an effective platform for sharing, only posting on your personal learning portfolio or
social media account(s) does not reach a targeted audience.
I plan share what I have learned from this experience with the players on the team. After the season is over, I will set up a
golf camp for grade-schoolers where the current players will lead the camp. They will be able to do this based off of the
knowledge of leadership that I have taught them. It will be focused primarily on the fundamentals of the game, but also
how golf has made them better men. The players will teach these things to the younger kids throughout the period of the
camp.
