RAFT Task Card 1: Math

Objective:
You will be able to identify shapes of various sizes and positions and describe their appearance
with informal details (i.e., color, number of sides, length of sides, 2D or 3D, etc.).

Format:
A police report
Topic:
Identify and describe the dangerous 2D and 3D shapes around your house that you took into
custody (or collected and put on the kitchen table), as well as describing their whereabouts.
Directions:
1. Play the I Spy Shapes game for at least 5 minutes.
2. Go on a hunt around your house for the following criminal shapes: a square, a circle, a
triangle, a sphere, a cylinder, and a cube. Bonus points for also capturing a triangular
pyramid.
3. Once all criminals are collected, bring them into the jail.
4. With the help of a family member, take a video of yourself describing the appearance and
whereabouts of each criminal shape. For each shape, you must report its:
a. Color
b. Dimensionality (2D or 3D)
c. Number of sides
d. Where you found it within your home.
5. Once the video is recorded, upload it to the Blog section on our class website as a
comment under the blog post entitled Circles and triangles and squares, o my!.

Assessment:
Record and upload a video of yourself describing the characteristics of each shape you found
within your house.
Uploading the video on time: 5 points
Describing the required characteristics of each shape: 5 points per shape (6 shapes)
Finding and describing the bonus shape: +5 points
Total points possible: 35 (40 including bonus)

RAFT Task Card 2: Math


Objective:
You will be able to identify and describe the differences between a 2D flat and a 3D solid.
Student Role:
Cartoonist
Audience:
Readers who love your cartoons
Format:
Cartoon strip
Topic:
Draw the story of how a flat square grew up and became a cube.
Directions:
1. Watch the 3D shape song to review the 3D shapes we know.
2. Choose your favorite 3D shape (solid), and identify its partner 2D shape (flat).
3. Come up with a story, at least 3 sentences long, on how the 2D flat grew up to become
the 3D solid.
4. Write out the 3 sentences of your story in the appropriate 3 boxes on your Cartoon
Storyboard Worksheet, one sentence underneath each box. If you need more room, use
the back of the worksheet. Have an adult help you as needed.
5. Draw a picture in each box depicting the sentence you wrote beneath it.
6. Go to http://www.storyboardthat.com and turn your 3-sentence storyboard into a real
cartoon!
7. Dont forget to save your work! Print your cartoon and bring it into class.

RAFT Task Card 3: Math


Objective:
You will be able to describe characteristics of and differences between 3D and 2D shapes, as
well as identify one role each shape plays in the real world.
Student Role:
A 3D shape
Audience:
A 2D shape who is a friend
Format:
A friendly conversation
Topic:
How are 3D shapes different from 2D shapes? What is one way each shape can be used in the
world?
Directions:
1. Watch the video Learning about Faces, Edges, and Vertices: Three Dimensional Figures
to learn about the characteristics of 3D figures.
2. Learn where you can find 2D and 3D shapes in the world around you by watching this
video.
3. Choose a 3D shape and its corresponding 2D friend (for example, a triangular pyramid
and a triangle, or a square and a cube). Identify which shapes you chose on the Shapes
Worksheet Script as the shapes name.
4. Identify how many sides and how many faces each shape has. Write these numbers in the
appropriate place on the Shapes Worksheet Script.
5. Identify where each shape can be found in the world around you, the shapes job. Write
your answer in the Shapes Worksheet Script located on our class website.
6. Go to Powtoon.com and create a 3-slide presentation of a conversation between the 3D
and 2D shapes, describing the differences between the shapes, using the Shapes
Worksheet Script as a guide.
7. Once your Powtoon is created, practice reading the Shapes Worksheet Script a few times.
Then record yourself reading your script as a voiceover on your Powtoon presentation.
8. Save your presentation, and then copy and paste the link to your presentation to our class
website as a comment under the blog post entitled Shapes in the World.

Worksheet Script over your presentation. Post this on the Blog page of our class website, and
turn in your Shapes Worksheet Script on Thursday after you post
