Stance Phase
The stance phase allows the athlete to get his or her body in position to
initiate the preparatory phase. No movement at this point once the stance is set
until the preparatory phase has begun. The athlete will be positioned in an athletic
position with his or her feet about a shoulder width apart.
The athletes wrists and hands slightly extended and abducted with abduction of
metacarpophalangeal joints and the thumb around the ball.
The elbow will be flexed as well as slightly pronated.
The athletes shoulder joint will be flexed and internally rotated.
The shoulder girdle will be rotated upward, slightly elevated, as well as slightly
adducted.
The athletes spinal column will have some cervical and lumbar extension.
The athletes hips will be slightly flexed as well as slightly abducted.
In this athletic stance, the pelvis will be rotated anteriorly.
The knee will be slightly flexed while the ankle and foot will be flexed as well.
Athlete is now ready to initiate the preparatory phase of the movement.
