1. Introduction
In 1920, each state had their own regulations regarding age and
alcohol consumption. The 18th Amendment of the United States
Constitution, which instituted prohibition, became law on January
17, 1920. Of course, this did not curtail the desire for liquor, and
where there's a will, there's a way. It became a criminal act to
produce, transport, have or consume alcohol, and as a result

offenders saturated the police, courts and prisons. Bootlegging
became widespread and organized crime became heavily
involved. The federal government was woefully understaffed and
overwhelmed trying to enforce the law.
A. Thesis statement
The legal drinking age should be lowered because when you
turn 18 you should have the right to make your own decision
about alcohol consumption.
2. Body paragraph Topic #1: Adulthood when youre 18 years old
A. 18 is the age of adulthood in the United States, and adults
should have the right to make their own decisions about
alcohol consumption.
B. 18-year olds can apply for a credit card, legally marry without
parental consent, divorce, rent, purchase, sign a binding
contract, vote, serve on a jury and serve in the military. If
charged with a crime, the 18 year old is no longer tried in
juvenile court; he's tried as an adult. In essence, an 18, 19 and
20-year-old can do everything a 21 year old can do, except
drink alcohol.
C. Transition sentence: Not only can 18 year old not make their
own decision about drinking, they also need to wait till they
are 21 drink legal.
3. Body Paragraph Topic #2: Lowering MLDA from 21 to 18 would
diminish the thrill of breaking the law to get a drink.
4. Body Paragraph Topic #3: Lowering the minimum legal drinking
age of 21 would be good for the economy.
5. Body Paragraph Topic #4: Minimum legal drinking age of 21 helps
prevent underage binge drinking.
