Lead Teacher: Melanie
Children and Learning/Development Goals:
1 Jackson: Focus on numbers and their relationship to counting.
He needs help in counting and recognition of number value. He also needs help learning how
to share with other children. Sorting the colored blocks into shapes and colors will help
Jackson practice counting objects. When counting out the blocks repeatedly, overtime he will
recognize that numbers have meaning.
2

Samantha: Number awareness

She needs help in counting and recognition of number value. Sorting the nuts and bolts into
shapes and colors will help Samantha practice counting and categorizing things into groups.

Jacob: Language development; speak correctly. Making friends!

His goal is to use correct language, such as saying I instead of Jacob. Jacob is also very shy
and doesnt know how to socially play with other children. Our goal is to help him play with
other children and develop socially amongst his peers. The block area is a good place for
Jacob to practice playing with other children and talking with the other children. As Jacob
plays with the tool box and construction pieces he can use his language skills to make
friends and practice talking with his peers.

Eli: Sharing and playing well with other children

He needs help learning not to take toys away from other children and how to play well with
other children. The block area is a good place for Eli to learn to share his toys and to play
with other children. Eli enjoys going to the black area daily and can practice playing with
other children as he plays with the tool box and other tools around the classroom.

Ellie: Recognizing print, especially letters in her own name.

Her goal is to recognize her name on her name tag and practice listening to and
comprehending story lines. As we read story books to Ellie and point to the print on the page
she will begin to recognize that print has meaning. When she finds her name tag each day,
she will learn the letters and shapes that make up her name.

Ashley: Language development

She has a goal to use correct language and to use her language and vocabulary more in
everyday activities. If she doesnt have to talk, she wont. We want to pull her words out by
asking her questions that help her use her vocabulary to engage in conversation. As she
manipulates the different activities she will be using her words to describe what she is doing,
especially in the block and dramatic play areas. As she continually talks with her peers and
teachers her language development will increase.

Tools Used to Construct

Christy

Preassessment and Findings:
Our children have been really interested in construction and the tools used to construct.
When we had the ice lesson a week ago we gave our children hammers to crush the ice. They were
intrigued and engaged in hammering the ice for a good 10 minutes with this one activity. The boys
in our classroom have a tendency to load the dump trucks full of wooden blocks and roll the trucks
around to drop them off at the working site. I would like to change their speech to include
construction site.
In the block area I was building a house with Eli, Kyle, Ashley and Jacob. Eli looked at one of
the blocks and said This looks like a hammer. and immediately started hammering the other
wooden blocks to set them into place Soon the other children in this group found blocks to
hammer with. I had a conversation with Eli after words and asked why he liked to hammer blocks
into place. He answered Because I am a builder and the blocks were falling down too much. He
and the others continued to hammer the blocks together for an extended amount of time.
Along with allowing the children to manipulate many different tools that are used in
construction, I also want the children to learn that each tool has its own function. Hammers cannot
screw things in and screw drivers cannot sand down wood. Each tool is specific to the job that it is
used for. I watched the children who hammered and some children would say this is my screwer
[screw driver] then beat a block like they would with a hammer. Then Eli would call out This is my
hammer. and then twist the block around like he would a screw driver. I noticed that they liked to
build things together with different tools but they did not know that tools have certain functions.
I had a conversation with Samantha and asked if she knew all the different tools used in
construction. She mentioned some of the more known tools such as a hammer and nails but she did
not know what a level or sand paper was.

Ideas to be Emphasized:
1. Many tools are used in construction; such as hammers, screw drivers, sand paper, levels,
nails/screws, and wrenches.
2. Each tool has its own function and purpose.

own art. They will discover different ways to hammer

and recognizing the characteristics of the hammer
while they paint and b creative.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will model painting
with a hammer and ask What do we normally use
hammers for? Encourage the children to be creative
with their paintings.
Activity Description: Shredded tires and cars are
placed in the sensory table for the children to
manipulate.
Child Objective: Children will manipulate the
shredded tires while playing with the cars. They are
discovering different textures and densities as they
play.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will model play and
interact with the children by engaging them in this
activity and asking, How does this rubber feel?
Where did this material come from?
Activity Description: Wooden pegs will be
hammered into boards so that the children can use
the hammer in its correct function.
Child Objective: Children will use the hammer to
pound the pegs into the holes. By doing this they will
practice using the hammer in its correct function.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will discuss with
the children the importance of having a hammer to
pound the pegs rather than a different tool. Why is
the hammer the best tool for this job?
Activity Description: With the wood working table
and tools the children are able to use the tools hands
on with sawing and hammering nails into real wood.
Child Objective: Children will participate in a
hands-on activity by using real tools. They will learn
how to manipulate the tools in their correct function.
The children will also be practicing their fine motor
skills to hammer, saw and screw things.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will provide safety
for the children; their main focus should be on
helping the children use the tools in their correct
function, safely. Teachers will ask, what is a hammer
used for? What does the saw do? and so on.
Activity Description: Provided will be many nuts
and bolts used in construction and the children will
organize and sort the bolts by size using the
tweezers.
Child Objective: Children will observe the different
sizes of the bolts and organize them by their shape.
IELG D4 G41Children sort, classify, and form simple
patterns among objects using size, and shape.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will watch as the
students sort the bolts by different shapes and
discuss with the children why we should, or how we
could sort the nuts and bolts this way. What
different sizes do you see? Why does size matter?
Activity Description: Play dough and tools used in
construction are set out together so that the children
can drill holes, saw and cut into the play dough with
these tools.

tool types and discover for themselves different
ways to use each tool. IELG D1:G14 Children will
explore materials and manipulatives with an
intended purpose to understand the different
functions of each tool while playing with the play
dough.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will discuss with
the children and model different ways of using each
tool and ask the children How is each tool different
in their job?
Activity Description: Blocks and ramps are set so
that the children can play with the cars going down
roads and into houses.
Child Objective: Children are learning to play
together and share the toys in the room. As they
build houses, ramps, and roads for the cars to drive
down they will develop social skills by playing
together. IELG D3 G 31 Children participate
cooperatively in group activities, especially when
sharing toys.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will watch and lead
the children to build relationships amongst
themselves. Help the children to share and ask How
do you think sour friend feels when you dont share
our toys with him.
Activity Description: Children dress up and play as
if they are in a construction site.
Child Objective: Children will role play what they
think happens in a construction site. IELG D2:G15
Children develop plots, scripts, and take on roles,
with a mixture of reality and fantasy. They will learn
to play together and role play a construction zone.
Intentional Teaching: Teachers will role play with
the children and pose questions such as How do
construction workers act? What do you think they
eat for lunch?

Activity Name
Many tools are used
in construction; such

levels, nails/screws,
and tape measure.

Each tool has its

own function and
purpose.

The Construction
Song

9:55-10:10 a.m.
Description
Boys and Girls today I am going to show you my
tool box! I am going to show you all of my tools that I
use to build things and I will put them on the towel.
Now this is my magic towel, when I put my tools on
this towel they are safe, but no one can touch my
towel or the magic is lost. Inside my tool box I have a
hammer and some nails. I have a screw driver and
some screws. I have sand paper, a level, a tape
measure, and a wrench and some bolts. Take tools
out of the box one by one and show to the children,
children will say the name of the tool with me.
Using a piece of wood I will demonstrate how to use
each tool from my tool box. Alright now that I have
all my tools I need to learn how they all work. Each
tool I have has its very own job at a construction
site. You have to use the right tool for the job
otherwise the job isnt done right! So first I am going
to take my hammer and pound the nail into this
piece of wood. Do it, children do the action with me.
Next I am going to screw this screw into the wood,
next I am going to level the wood and see if the
wood is flat, then I am going to sand the wood some,
and measure how long the wood is with my tape
measure Model to the children all of the tools and
their correct function.
When singing The Construction Song children are
able to do the motions of hammering a nail, sawing
a board, drilling a hole, painting a wall, and turning a
screw. The finger play reemphasizes that each tool
has its own unique function.

cannot take them out but sticking out so that the
children can hammer and screw them more into
the wood more. The children will also be given
sand paper, and share some levels. The children
will use the different tools to construct their piece
of wood. Hammering the nail, screwing in the
screw, sanding the wood and seeing if the wood is
flat.
Objective: The children will be using each of their
tools in their correct function in a very hands-on
activity (ITBE-Tools have their own function). IELG
D2:G18 The children are engaged in a fine-motor
skill building activity by pounding the hammer,
twisting the screw driver and sanding the wood
down.

Bring out my tools and talk with the students again

about how tool have their own function. Hammers
are for pounding nails, screw drivers are for twisting
screws, saws are for cutting wood and measuring
tapes are for measuring.
Sing this song again to have children do finger play
with me.
Children grab two blocks off the shelves (preferably
the small rectangular blocks). I will say each childs
name and model for the children how to clap with
the blocks the syllables of the childs name, then
they will do it with me. SamanthaSa/man/tha
Three claps.
(I know that they will not understand that we are
clapping out the syllables but they can learn about
chunking words into groups. I think this activity will
be mostly about helping the children to learn other
students names in the classroom.) IELG D5 G56
Children recognize the phonemes as both initial and
ending sounds; they begin to break apart the
sounds to form words.
Tell the story of the three little pigs on the felt
board. I will engage the students by having them
tell the story with me.
Read the story book to the children while they finish
waiting for their parents to come
Sing the song with the changed words to fit in the
tools theme. Sing song at a variety of speeds with
the children doing the actions. (One time sing really
slow, another time super fast.
