OTHELLO is the main hero and protagonist of the play.

He is a Christian Moor who became the


armys general in Venice and a powerful figure who is respected by those around him. Because
of his age, race, and his life as a soldier, he never once became an easy victim to insecurities
despite the fact that he has a highly elevated status. He eventually was eventually deceived by his
dear friend, Iago, into believing that his beloved wife, Desdemona, is unfaithful through the
application of the destructive and powerful works of jealousy.

DESDEMONA became the wife of the main hero, Othello, after eloping with him behind her
fathers back, Brabanzio. She is the one all the men, of all ages, are passionately after for she is
beautiful and the daughter of the senator in Venice. Like her husband, she is also a Christian who
has a pure heart and a strong, determined mind who is more than capable of defending her
marriage against the jealousy pouring out from the one she married.

IAGO is Othellos entrusted ensign and friend. He is twenty-eight years old and is also the vain
villain within the play. He plans to destroy Othello because of multiple reasons one being he
believes the rumors going around that his friend slept with his wife, Emilia, and the other
because he was denied the promotion in becoming the generals lieutenant. He uses multiple of
the deadly sins in order to shape others mind into their deadly demises which leads up to many
characters end.

EMILIA is Iagos wife and Desdemonas friend, as well as being her lady in waiting.
Desdemona and Emilia are both deeply attached to each other and, therefore, they both have
much trust and respect for the other. Although, she is a cynical woman who knows much about

the world she lives in and eventually began to distrust her husband. Emilia is eventually the one
who undoes all of her husbands wrongdoings by revealing the truths of his evil acts.

CASSIO is a handsome, young man who is Othellos lieutenant. Even with his high position in
the army, he is young, naive, and an inexperienced soldier with much to learn. Cassio is tricked
by Iago, the person who despises him for he was the one chosen to be the lieutenant, which ends
up costing him his position in the army through a drunken brawl with Roderigo. As Desdemonas
friend, he asks for her help in getting his job back after being advised by Iago to do so. He was
eventually used by Iago to play on Othellos insecurities with jealousy.

RODERIGO is a rich man in Venice and Desdemonas number one suitor. He believes he is
working with Iago to retrieve Desdemona from Othello embrace and to kill Cassio, who he
believes is a potential candidate for the love of his life after separating with her beloved husband.
In the end of his foolish life, he was just extra baggage to Iagos plans who was used for his
money and his money only.

BIANCA is a Cyprus prostitute who is in love with Michael Cassio. She is teased by her favorite
customer with promises of marriage who eventually became a pawn in Iagos evil plan to destroy
Othello and Cassio.

BRABANZIO is an important Venetian senator and Desdemonas father. After Othello ran off
with his daughter to be wed and betrayed Brabanzio, the trust in his friend slowly came to a
close.

DUKE OF VENICE is Venices official authoritative figure who had much respect for Othello
as a military and civilian servant. He sends Othello and allows him to take his wife to fight off
the Turks who has threatened to take over Cyprus.

MONTANO is Cyprus governor before Othello and Othellos friend. He waits for the arrival of
his friend from Venice and eventually become the victim of a drunken battle between Roderigo
and Michael Cassio.

LODOVICO is a Desdemonas cousin and an important diplomat in Venice. He appears in the


play as a messenger from the mainland to announce that Othello will be replaced by Cassio as
governor in Cyprus.

GRAZIANO is a kinsman of Brabanzio who ends up being the accompany of Lodovico to


Cyprus. He is the one who ends up revealing that Desdemonas father, the senator of Venice, died
of heartbreak.
