Miss Melanies Plan

Professionalism
As a teacher I remain professional with the students but am still friendly and cheerful in my work. I do not want to be
an intimidating teaching with strict rules and behavior codes of conduct. I am the teacher who has control in the
classroom but am still approachable by students and parents.
My attire in the classroom will reflect the attitude I expect from my students and myself. I realize that the mood in
the classroom can be directly affected by how I dress and act in the classroom.
My students will be addressed by their names, as given to them by their parents. I do this because I realize that
respect is mainly shown through my words and actions towards the students. I want the students to use my correct
name so I will do the same for them. Also I will never say a degrading comment to the students as this can halt their
internal motivation to learning.
I have a website that helps me directly communicate with the parents of my students. I want all of my parents to
feel as if they are a part of the class, because in reality they are. Through my website parents and students can see
what we are learning on a day to day basis, homework and assignments due soon, students progression in the
class, and email me directly about any further questions. Parents are encouraged to join me in the classroom
especially for art projects, classroom parties, field trips, etc. I will update this website on a weekly basis and reply to
emails at the end of each day. Having this website will help bridge the communication gap that can sometimes
separate home and school.

Philosophy of Discipline
Classroom discipline refers to the teachers efforts to help the students conduct themselves responsibly in a
classroom setting. Discipline is linked to misbehavior, defined as any behavior that, is either intentional or through
thoughtlessness, interferes with teaching and learning in the classroom. Misbehavior when left unchecked makes
classroom life chaotic, hinders teaching, suppresses learning, harms personal relationships, and fosters selfdefeating habits. (Charles 286)
White board

I have my classroom set up with all the students desks in the shape of a
U. This helps me easily see what each student is working on and helps
the students maintain focus. I also like the students to work in teams, so
that group work and activities can be implemented. This classroom will
help the students learn individually as well as in groups creating a
constructive environment overall. Also in the room is a half circle table that
provides a space for group study or one-on-one learning with the teacher.
Behind the students desks will be a floor space where we can have class
meetings and more learning opportunities. This area is a good focus area
for the students, it helps to provide time away from their desks but
continue learning. As for the teacher desk, it will be placed in the corner of
the room. I will not use my desk while students are in the room; my role as
teacher is to be actively engaged in the students learning. This is done by
me being on my feet teaching and mentoring at all times in the classroom.

Rug time

The way a classroom is organized reflects the type of learning that will take
Teacher
Desk
place. If the classroom is organized and functional then learning in the classroom will reflect that positive
atmosphere. I want my students to feel comfortable and safe in my classroom; with the use of bright colors and the
students art work and various assignments the classroom will have a cheerful positive atmosphere.

Desired Behaviors
I want all of students to feel comfortable and safe in my classroom. If the students feel safe to share their thoughts,
ideas, and questions then there is more learning on an individual scale.
I will have set goals for my students
to help them achieve academic
success and create a safe learning
environment. These goals include:
individual learning and progression,
group learning, and most
importantly respect for one another.
Having rules will help to achieve the goals set. The
rules that we set as a class will bring the students
closer together in the beginning of the year, and the
consistent discipline will prevent misbehavior creating
a learning environment. The rules will reflect the
desired behaviors in the classroom; the students will
Teachers have the right to teach while students have the right to learn (Canter
Theory). With the goals I have in place and the rules set by the students this
will be achieved. The students will be able to learn in my classroom because of
the attitude and feeling that is set by the expectations present. The behavior
in the classroom will be constructive to the students learning environment.
Most important, I will reflect the desired behavior in the classroom. I will set the example of respect
for my students in order for them to mirror my behavior to one another. I will have goals and
expectations set for myself to help me keep the discipline fair and equal among the students, to
teach the students to the best of my abilities every day, to be prepared for the students learning,

and to communicate with the principal and parents
of my students in a professional manner.

Rules and Consequences
Consequences will be simple and follow a step by
step pattern.

1. First and only warning given.

2. Next they take their work across the hall to
work in a different classroom by themselves
until they can return with focus.
3. If the misbehave again time will be taken
from their recess of after school.
4. Phone call home if misbehavior continues.

The students will make the majority of the rules in my classroom; this allows
them to have an interest and say of how their classroom is run. If the students
help to make the rules, they are more willing to follow the rules, or accept the
consequence when one of their rules is broken. I will help guide their thoughts
and ideas as to what rules they would like to implement. Five seven rules are
adequate for achieving desired behaviors. Students are capable of setting high
standards for themselves; by setting classroom goals and expectations as a
class they will grow closer as a group and continually help each other reach
I will have 2 core rules set in my classroom. These rules are: 1) respect for the teacher and for
your peers. Respect is the number one rule in my classroom; if the students feel respected in the
classroom then they can take part in their own learning through discovery with their peers. 2)
Actively participate in the classroom. I want all of my students to love learning; this is done
through pondering and asking questions to either their peers or to me. When the students learn
how to love learning then they can set themselves up for a successful future.

Extreme misbehavior
Not a question of if; but when.
I will do all I can to prepare for
emergencies by going to teacher
prep meetings regularly; and
continually talking though my plan
with my students and my partner
teacher.

My students have a huge responsibility

in this plan. I will have two runners. The
first runner will run across the hall and
notify my partner teacher of the
problem. In emergencies the student will
know that interrupting the class is okay
in this one instance. The second runner
will run to the office for back up help. I
will have back-up runners three and four
in case the other runners are absent.
The rest of my class will know to line up
in the safest part of the classroom which
I will direct them too. They will know to
stay calm and quiet as the teachers find
a solution to the situation.
My students will be well-rehearsed in
this plan by repetition and role play. The

My partner teacher and I will come

together in creating a plan together.
This plan will consist of helping one
another in critical situations. The
struggling teacher will have two
runner students. When one of those
students enters our classroom we
will be at the teachers side within
10 seconds; doing something to help
the situation.

The office will have the role of back

up support. They will deal with the
discipline of the extreme
misbehavior; it will be more
consequence than I can give in my
plan alone.

After the conflict has reached a

resolution I will debrief the situation
with my students to help them talk
through what happened. I want them
to understand come to terms with
the given situation so that will not
halt learning in the classroom for the
future.

Communicate Plan
The first day of school can be exciting and intimidating; in my classroom the first day of school is fun and very
informing for the students. They will learn and make the rules for the classroom, and set the consequences for
misbehavior. We will play games to help the students feel comfortable in the classroom and get to know their peers
and me, their teacher. We will practice our emergency plans and create a KWL for the year in advance. A KWL is a
chart that maps what the students know, what they want to know, and what they have learned so far. This will help
me see where the students are in their education individually and as a group so I can best fit lesson plans to their
specific needs.
The plan that the students and I discuss on the first day of school will be presented on posters and hung around the
classroom. This way we together can reference back to the rules and procedures of the classroom. If my students
are fully aware of the rules, then they will have no misunderstandings for when the rules are broken and a
consequence is given.
Our rules and plan for the classroom will be put on my website the first day of school so that parents can some to
understand how the classroom will be run; if they have any questions I am more than willing to discuss through
email or parent teacher conference.
My brochure will be given to each student on the first day so that with their parents, they can come to understand
how I run the classroom.

A Little Extra Flair

The start to every day in the classroom is vital to set the mood for the day of learning. I will be starting my
classroom with our Good Morning song. This song helps the students to wake up, get their morning jitters out, and
help to guide their focus towards learning.

Good morning, Good morning, Good morning

Clap your hands. Clap, clap, clap And stomp your feet. Stomp, stomp, stomp
Then spin around, touch the ground, jump high reach low and sit back down
Good morning, Good morning, Good morning.
Teacher: Good mornin', Students: Good mornin'!
Ive missed you the whole night through, Good mornin', Good mornin' to you.
Teacher: Good mornin', Students: Good mornin' to you.
Teacher: When the school bell began to ring, the sun was shinin' bright.
Students: Now its time to learn and grow, it's too late to say goodnight.
So, say good mornin', good mornin'! Sunbeams will soon smile through,
Good mornin', good mornin', to you, And you, and you, and you!
Teacher: Good morning, Students: Good morning,
English, Math, and History too Good morning, Good morning to you!
Teacher: Good Mornin'!

Students: Good Mornin'!
