LESSON PLAN
PA Common Core Standards
Referenced from http://www.pdesas.org/ for PA State approved academic standards (Grade-specific Numbers & Descriptions)

4.1.2.A: Describe how a plant or animal is dependent on living and nonliving things in an aquatic habitat.
S.K-2.B.2.1.1: Identify and describe habitats

Objectives
Objectives correspond with PA State Common Core Standards listed above (SWBAT)

SWBAT model an aquatic habitat

SWBAT identify and describe habitats

Lesson Introduction: (5-7 min)

(Activate background knowledge & set purpose)

Hold up images of different landforms and habitats and see if the children can identify them. If they are unable
to guess correctly, tell them what the landform/habitat is and describe it. Ask them if they can figure out any
plants or animals that may live in that habitat and provide reasoning for their guesses.

Activities/Procedures: (25-30min)
Lesson Plans are conducive to student achievement and focus on PA State CC standards and objectives

Create an ocean in a bottle.

Get a plastic bottle and fill it with water or use a water bottle. Take the label off and pour some of the water out.
Place some plastic fish, shells, stones, etc., into the bottle.
Choose between one of the following (the other could be homework):
Journal.
Students can draw a picture of a habitat (original or based off of an existing habitat) and then explain what
animals would live in that habitat and how the animals would survive.
Animal Habitat Graph.
Cut out the 14 animals from the sheet. Glue the animals onto the graph in the appropriate block.

Closing& Assessment: (5-7 min)

(Restate purpose & assess comprehension; met objectives?)

Show the students the landforms/habitat images again and see if they can identify them. Give them a worksheet
for homework (whichever one they didnt do in class).

Use more animals or more habitats in the graph

worksheet
Include research on different habitats and the animals
that live in them

Directions: Draw a picture of your own habitat and then write about what animals would
live there and how they would survive.
