Lesson 3-5: Proving Lines Parallel (Guided Reading Notes)

Pre-Reading: Read the Why? section at the beginning of the lesson and answer the following questions.
1)
2)

Why are the two sides of the track constructed to be parallel at all points?
If one of the support bars that joins the two sides of the track is perpendicular to one side of the
tracks, what is the measure of the angle created by the bar and the other side of the track?

How can you identify

parallel lines?

We can use the postulates related to parallel lines cut by a transversal to determine

if two lines are parallel.

Corresponding Angles

Alternate Exterior Angles

Consecutive Interior Angles

Alternate Interior Angles

If two parallel lines are cut by a

transversal, then each pair of
corresponding angles is congruent.
If two parallel lines are cut by a
transversal, then each pair of alternate
exterior angles are congruent.
If two parallel lines are cut by a
transversal, then each pair of consecutive
interior angles is supplementary.
If two parallel lines are cut by a
transversal, then each pair of alternate
interior angles are congruent.

How can you re-write these theorems so that the statements can be used
as a test to identify if two lines are parallel?

Create an example to help summarize what youve learned in this section.
