OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

1-7. Construct objects and models of objects, using a variety of
different materials
1-8. Identify the purpose of different components in a personally
constructed object or model, and identify corresponding components
in a related object or model.
1-7.1. Select appropriate materials, such as papers, plastics, woods;
and design and build objects, based on the following kinds of
construction tasks:
Construct model objects; eg. Furniture, equipment,
boats, vehicles
1-8.2. Identify component parts of a personally constructed object,
and describe the purpose of each part.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Construct a paper car containing all 4 of the components discussed in class
(steering wheel, wheels, lights, and body)
2. Identify the 4 components of the car using a colour coding system with stickers
provided (steering wheel=blue, wheels=red, lights=yellow, body=green)

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:

Products/Performa
nces:

-Students are following directions to construct their car

containing all 4 of the parts
-Students are properly identifying all 4 main parts with the
stickers provided
Do students understand the 4 parts of a car and the
final assessment task?
Are students following directions to construct their car
properly?
Have the students constructed a car containing all 4
parts?
Are students able to properly identify the 4 parts of the
car using our sticker colour coding system?
-The finished car containing all 4 parts
-The car with the coloured stickers applied to the proper parts

Introduction
We are finishing our cars today!

Time

What are the 4 parts of a car we need? What is their

purpose?
-Review the 4 parts of a car and the purpose of each
-Continue building (begin with putting on the steering
wheel)
-Put on the wheels
-Finish construction
-Hand out stickers for assessment task
Body
Review 4 parts of our cars
-Have a discussion at the beginning of class
reviewing our 4 parts of the car (steering wheel,
wheels, lights, body)
-Write each on the board and have the students
describe their purpose
-Explain the how the assessment of their cars
will work after we have completed our cars
Do students understand the 4 parts of a car
and the final assessment task?
Assessment of this activity will simply be observing
that the students know the 4 parts that are to be
included, and understand the purpose of each. The
classroom discussion will tell me the students
knowledge on the topic. This will eventually tie into
Learning Objective 1 and 2 as the students must
include all 4 of these parts and properly identify them
for the summative assessment.
Complete the construction of our car
-Go through the assembly of our steering wheel.
Distribute the modeling clay and explain how to
fasten our steering wheel to the body of our car
-I will poke the hole for the paper to be attached to
the straw
Attach our wheels
-distribute tape that will be used to attach the pipe
cleaners to our body
-once again, I will poke the hole in the paper wheels
to be attached to the pipe cleaner
Are students following directions to construct
their car properly?
Have the students constructed a car
containing all 4 parts?
This learning activity will be associated with Learning
Objective #1. The final grade of this assignment will be
summative and will be partially based on the
construction of the car. I will be looking to see that the
students followed directions to include all 4 parts of
their car.

Lesson

Students will identify the 4 parts of their car

-4 colours of stickers will be distributed to each
student
-I will explain which part of the car is to have what
colour sticker on it
-I will also write this on the board for reference
Have the students constructed a car
containing all 4 parts?
Are students able to properly identify the 4
parts of the car using our sticker colour coding
system?
This activity will be associated with learning objective
#2 and be the main focus of the final summative
assessment. This activity will allow me to assess that
the students have all 4 parts of the car, and that they
can also identify these parts.
Closure
For the assessment of this task I will examine each car
to see that the student took time to carefully construct
their car, and have included all 4 parts. This will be my
assessment for Learning Objective #1. The main
summative assessment will be from the identification
of these 4 parts using the stickers. Properly identifying
each part using the right sticker colour to do so will be
summatively assessed by me after completion. This
will cover Learning Objective #2.
Do we have a good understanding of the 4 main parts
of our car? Was this a fun activity?
We will be moving onto more building next class
