C. Big Idea
The students will be able to identify the rules and safety tips of multiple sports.
D. New Content
Following the rules and safety tips given by parents, coaches, and referees in
sports keeps the game or activity enjoyable and injury-free.

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
DAY ONE:
1. The teacher will begin the lesson by saying to the students Today we are going to talk
about ways we can stay safe while doing physical activities. Then, the teacher will ask
the students what some important things to do before doing a physical activity like gym

class or a sport.
Expected answers should be things such as eating a proper meal before, warming
up, stretching and getting hydrated. After 4-5 suggestions of important things to
do before physical activities, the teacher will write these ideas on the board so the
students can look back on them, possibly adding more ideas throughout the
lesson.
2. Now, the teacher will ask the students what some important things to do during a
physical activity could be.
Expected answers should be things such as resting/breaks, taking water breaks,
wearing sports gear, like helmets, shin guards, mouth guards, ankle braces, shoes
with rubber cleats, sunscreen, etc. The teacher will add these ideas to the list on
the board as well, also adding more ideas the students think of/come up with
during the lesson.
3. After discussing things to do before and during a physical activity, the teacher will
wrap up this discussion by asking the students what some important things to do after a
physical activity could be.
Expected answers should be remain hydrated/keep drinking water, rest, and eat a
healthy snack or meal. The teacher will add these to the list on the board for
inspiration to get the kids started for the main activity.

This opening discussion should take about 7 minutes.

B. Development
1. The teacher will introduce the activity for the day, and say, Boys and girls, now
we are going to be making a pamphlet describing safety guidelines or rules in a
specific sport. I will assign groups of 3, and one member from each group will
pick out of a basket of pieces of paper with a sport written on it.
2. Created in advance or saved from previous a class, the teacher will allow the
students to preview a sample of a pamphlet, but this pamphlet will not be about
any of the sports the 8 groups have the option to make their pamphlet about, so
each group has a fair chance.
3. Once the students get to take a look at the sample sports pamphlet, the teacher
will ask the students to name some sports that they play and rules for those sports.
4. The teacher will tell the students that when the class came up with ways to stay
safe before, during, and after physical activities, the most important way to stay
safe is to follow the rules for that activity sport, and that is the reason we are
making the pamphlet.
5. Our mission for this pamphlet is to pass the information that we know about
sports rules as well as information that we research to parents or even kids that are
new to a sport, so they will be aware of rules and ways to stay safe before playing
that sport.
6. As the teacher hands out the materials for the pamphlets, he/she will explain that
the students will use the iPads or laptops (their choice) provided in the classroom
to find information about their assigned sport.

7. The teacher will also provide reliable websites for each sport to ensure Internet
safety for the children, as well as frequently monitoring the students as they use
the Internet and go through the Internet search history when the students are
finished to make sure each student remained on task and used appropriate
websites.

8. The students will have approximately 45 minutes to complete their pamphlets.
During this time, the students will research and record all necessary information
for the pamphlet, and then work together to design and create their brochure.
9. When the time is up, the teacher will tell the students that on Monday we will
share our pamphlets with the class, but for now, the time is up and the students
need to hand them in.
C. Closure
DAY TWO:
1. Each group will briefly present their pamphlets to the class, telling the class their
sport, and explaining a couple examples of the rules and safety precautions to take
while playing that sport.
2. The pamphlets will be put in a binder and placed in a spot in the classroom where
students feel free to look through it if they need to, and it will be called Sports
Safety in Third Grade!
D. Accommodations/Differentiation

Sean has trouble focusing in small group settings. The teacher will pre-determine
his group for the pamphlet, placing him in a group of two other students who are
constantly observed remaining on task during previous lessons, especially more
hands-on lessons involving group work, so they keep Sean on task.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
The teacher will take anecdotal notes throughout the lesson of
student participation and staying on task.
The pamphlet will be graded using a rubric (attached).

3. Summative
Test at the end of the unit.
V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
1. Did the students work well in their assigned groups?
2. Could other materials or resources have better assisted me as I
taught the lesson?
