Allotted Time 45 minutes

Subject or Topic: What is Pollution?

Grade Level 3_
Section

STANDARD:
4.5.3.C: Identify different types of pollution and their sources.
10.2.3.E: Identify environmental factors that affect health.
o pollution (e.g., air, water, noise, soil)
1.5.3.B: Develop content appropriate for the topic.
o Gather and organize information, incorporating details relevant to the
topic.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The 3rd grade students will be able to identify pollution causes and ways to reduce
them by making observations.
II. Instructional Materials
Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FWvbui6ook
Guided notes
Observation sheets
3 IPads
Pictures for each type of pollution
Cut out letters of L-A-W

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
Prerequisite skills
Knowledge of pollution.

Key Vocabulary

Pollution: when the environment is contaminated, or dirtied, by

waste, chemicals, and other harmful substances
Environment: the area in which something exists or lives

Big Idea
What is pollution and how does it affect us?
Additional content
The students will learn how pollution is a responsibility for all
people

IV. Implementation
Introduction
The teacher will begin by asking students to share what they know
about pollution. Have students write their ideas on the board.
Next, display large paper cut outs of the letters L A W
Ask students to do a think pair share with their table to discuss the
types of pollution they think the letters represent. Have students
share their responses aloud.
Explain that the three kinds of pollution we are learning about are
land, water, and air.

Development
Distribute guided notes for video.
Show video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FWvbui6ook
Discuss what the students learned in the video.
Have students tape their notes in their science journals.
Explain that today we are going to look at the three kinds of
pollution in our world and figure out ways we can prevent or reduce
them.
Explain the three stations for Land, Air, and Water.
a. Land- There will be 3 different pictures of land
pollution displayed on the IPad. Students will observe
the amount of trash, where it is located, and if there are
any animals/people around it.
b. Air- There will be 3 pictures of Air pollution included
smog, fumes from cars, and factory smoke. The
students should observe the amount of fumes, where the
pictures are located, and any other crucial details.
c. Water- There will be 3 pictures including oil spills,
trash in water, and dirty water. The students should
observe the animals in the water, the amount of
pollution, and any other important details.
The students will each have their own observation sheet that they can
record what they see and then provide one way that type of pollution
could be avoided.

The students will work in groups of 3-4 and move from each station
and take observations.
With their groups, the students will discuss ways that this type of
pollution could have been prevented

Closure
When each group is finished at the stations, have them sit back at
their tables.
On the board, have a chart written out that the students can write the
observations that they recorded and one way they discussed to
prevent it.
Have students decide as a class two ways that we can all reduce
pollution in our everyday lives.
Finish class by telling students that tomorrow we will begin to look
closely at water pollution.

Accommodations/Differentiation
Greg has difficulty with attention. He should be seated in the front of
the room and work with a partner that will keep him engaged.
Greg enjoys using IPads. Although he might be engaged, have his
partner motivate him to complete his observation sheet.

Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative- Students will be evaluated through observation and completion
of observation sheet.
2. Summative- Test given at the end of the unit.

V. Reflective Response
Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan

Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective

answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
Was this lesson engaging enough for the students?

Were the students better able to understand the effects of pollution

from this inquiry?
How can I make this lesson better?
