    The muscular system performs many important functions in the body including movement, pumping blood, digestion, and breathing. Muscles are made up of bundles of fibers that contract and relax to cause movement. When one muscle contracts, the opposing muscle relaxes to allow movement like lifting an arm. Muscles are connected to bones by tendons and connective tissue holds the muscle fibers together. Maintaining healthy muscles requires exercise like running, lifting weights, and playing sports. The heart and tongue are also muscles and there are around 350 total muscles in the human body making it the largest system.
