1. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS.
Describe the goals or philosophy that guide your practice as a teacher, assessor of learners, mentor and/or
advisor.
2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your role as a teacher, assessor, mentor and/or advisor.
Over the last 9 years as a nurse, I have had a myriad of opportunities to prepare for my
future roles as a mentor and as an educator. I have assisted with precepting different
graduate nurses and full-time precepted a graduate nurse in my hospitals nurse fellowship
program. I have become an Advanced Burn Life Support Instructor and given burn
resuscitation lectures and hands-on training of burn wound care multiple times annually for
the last several years at Memorial Herman Hospital (MHHS). I will be obtaining my Trauma
Nurse Core Certification (TNCC) Instructor Certification in January to allow me to teach
TNCC in the future. During the course of my MSN-Education journey, I have created
multiple power point presentations for teaching different subjects, including simulation lab
practicals. For one of our numerous group projects, I have also helped create a semester
long course for nursing undergraduate students.

and This was one of the best lectures we've had in
nursing school. Their obvious expertise and humor
were entertaining and educational. I think that in the
future they should always do the burn lecture (if they
want of course)

K.H.
Preceptor
To train this new nurse for 5 months as an RN fellow, to
give job experience in the ICU setting for future job
placement
K.H. worked with me for two to three 12 hours shifts per
week for 5 months, learning how to be a nurse in the
multi-acuity Burn setting. She learned skills enabling
her to safely care for 2 stable ICU patients, 3-4 IMU
patients, or 4-5 floor level patients.
K.H. completed her rotation and is now working as an
RN
Post fellowship, K.H. was offered 2 positions and is
now working in the Pediatric ICU at an MHHS hospital
H.V.
Mentor
To spend one hour for one day each week with a
student deemed at risk to improve his chances for
success in school
For one semester, I worked with H.V. to improve his
math and reading skills, by playing math games and
reading and discussing passages from books to
increase his reading comprehension
H.V. completed the 2nd grade successfully
From 2008- 2012, assisted with monthly hands on education and validation of use for RNs new to
the NxStage Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy machine

In 2012, Designed and constructed posters for Performance Improvement on Taking Bladder
Pressures (Burn Unit only) and the Volumetric Diffusive Respiration ventilator (specialized
ventilator) (for Burn Unit and Shock Trauma ICU)
In 2012, Created a poster updating unit on JCAHO readiness, Red Rules, Importance of Handwashing and Safe Storage of Oxygen Tanks
Educational material should be interesting, eye-catching, and relatable, while being easy
to read and conceptually simplified. If at all possible, education materials should have the
consequences of what can occur if the suggested rules are not followed, so that people
are more fully informed of the content and what is at stake. I feel that once my students
understand why things happen the way they do, they are better able to understand and
remember what they have learned. As I said in my teaching philosophy: knowledge is
power but only if one can remember it!

Leadership can be shown in many ways, and I believe one should lead by example. A
leader should not only lead, but should be an involved team player who sets her entire
team up for success.

2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your educational leadership roles.
As a new nurse, I worked hard to become a resource nurse/charge nurse for my unit. I
took classes on how to be a successful charge nurse and currently discuss with other
charge nurses how to handle difficult situations. As a charge nurse, I try to serve as best I
can, which includes continuously providing assistance to my co-workers and doing my
best to anticipate any future needs that may occur.
I joined multiple shared governance committees to become a nurse leader on my hospital
campus. Being on multiple committees has enabled me to network with other nurse and
hospital leaders in our quest to gain Magnet status.
In regards to my personal career in education, one of my main goals since I became a
nurse has been to become a published author in a peer reviewed journal. By learning
what is required to accomplish this goal, I will be able to assist others to do the same in the
future.
3. LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
Duplicate and complete this table for each leadership activity you wish to present. List your materials in reverse

support the scope, quality and dissemination of the activity, if available.
