EDUCATOR PORTFOLIO
Name and Degree(s): Debra Mulkey Mott, RN, BSN, CCRN, MSN Graduate - 12/15
Position: Registered Nurse, Level III
School (SOM, SON, SHP, GSBS): UTMB School of Nursing, Graduate Level
Department/Program: Masters of Science in Nursing - Education
Percent Effort in Educational Activities: 100%
SECTION I: TEACHING, ASSESSMENT, MENTORING, ADVISING
1. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS.
Describe the goals or philosophy that guide your practice as a teacher, assessor of learners, mentor and/or
advisor.

As a registered nurse, an educator and a mentor, I want to my students to feel

passionate about what they are learning. I want to engage, inspire and entertain them, while
challenging them to make a positive change in how they see the world and put into practice
what they learn in my classroom.
At the same time, I want to mentor them, not only as future nurses, but as people.
Kindness, the ability to work hard, and respect are important attributes I want to instill in my
students.
I feel that being able to tap into students ability to associate what they are learning to their
own lives is vital. When people can emotionally connect with what they are learning, their
learning experience is deeper and more meaningful. I have also found that when one
understands the why of a subject, one is better able grasp the entire concept. Knowledge is
power, but only if one can remember it!

2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your role as a teacher, assessor, mentor and/or advisor.

Over the last 9 years as a nurse, I have had a myriad of opportunities to prepare for my
future roles as a mentor and as an educator. I have assisted with precepting different
graduate nurses and full-time precepted a graduate nurse in my hospitals nurse fellowship
program. I have become an Advanced Burn Life Support Instructor and given burn
resuscitation lectures and hands-on training of burn wound care multiple times annually for
the last several years at Memorial Herman Hospital (MHHS). I will be obtaining my Trauma
Nurse Core Certification (TNCC) Instructor Certification in January to allow me to teach
TNCC in the future. During the course of my MSN-Education journey, I have created
multiple power point presentations for teaching different subjects, including simulation lab
practicals. For one of our numerous group projects, I have also helped create a semester
long course for nursing undergraduate students.

SECTION II: ENDURING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

1. PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS.
Describe the goals or philosophy that guides your development of educational materials.

Educational material should be interesting, eye-catching, and relatable, while being easy
to read and conceptually simplified. If at all possible, education materials should have the
consequences of what can occur if the suggested rules are not followed, so that people
are more fully informed of the content and what is at stake. I feel that once my students
understand why things happen the way they do, they are better able to understand and
remember what they have learned. As I said in my teaching philosophy: knowledge is
power but only if one can remember it!
2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your role as a developer of educational materials.

I have prepared myself for my role as a developer of educational materials by taking

courses to train nurses as future preceptors, by working to complete my MSN-Education,
and by remembering lessons I was taught by my former instructors. Now, whenever I take
a course, I objectively observe the materials and information and make notes on how I can
incorporate the best ways of educating others into my own lessons.
3. EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS.
Duplicate and complete this table for each enduring material related to education you wish to present. List your
materials in reverse chronological order, with the most recent ones at the beginning. In the Appendix, provide
examples of work that support the scope, quality and dissemination of the activity, if available.

Presentation (including Brochure) on Hypertension

I designed an easy-to-read brochure on hypertension
and 10 ways to lower ones blood pressure, which I
then presented to members of the American Red
Cross. I brought a portable blood pressure monitor
with me to enable my class to check their blood
pressure if they desired at the end of the presentation.
Designer and presenter
To educate lay people about the importance of life-style
changes and regular doctors visits in order to avoid
hypertension. If one does have hypertension, it is
important to visit ones doctor regularly to treat it.
Each person in the class had questions regarding
hypertension and several of them took their own blood
pressure. Unfortunately, 2 people had high blood
pressure, but the learning this prompted them to
promise to visit their doctor soon.
I provided brochures to the American Red Cross staff
for future perusal and use.

SECTION III: EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

1. PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS.
Describe the goals or philosophy that guides your educational leadership activities.

Leadership can be shown in many ways, and I believe one should lead by example. A
leader should not only lead, but should be an involved team player who sets her entire
team up for success.

Educational Portfolio Template developed by the UTMB Academy of Master Teacher, last edited July 2012

Educator Portfolio
2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your educational leadership roles.

As a new nurse, I worked hard to become a resource nurse/charge nurse for my unit. I
took classes on how to be a successful charge nurse and currently discuss with other
charge nurses how to handle difficult situations. As a charge nurse, I try to serve as best I
can, which includes continuously providing assistance to my co-workers and doing my
best to anticipate any future needs that may occur.
I joined multiple shared governance committees to become a nurse leader on my hospital
campus. Being on multiple committees has enabled me to network with other nurse and
hospital leaders in our quest to gain Magnet status.
In regards to my personal career in education, one of my main goals since I became a
nurse has been to become a published author in a peer reviewed journal. By learning
what is required to accomplish this goal, I will be able to assist others to do the same in the
future.

3. LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
Duplicate and complete this table for each leadership activity you wish to present. List your materials in reverse
chronological order, with the most recent ones at the beginning. In the Appendix, provide examples of work that
support the scope, quality and dissemination of the activity, if available.
