Title: The identification of differentiating success factors for students in

computer science and computer information systems programs of study
Author: Carabetta, James R
This summary focused on the differences that existed between the students who
had been adjusted to successful computer science major and those who had been
adjusted to successful computer information systems major. If such difference was
found, to determine rule for assignment of each. Due to computerrelatedness, it is
often times confused that computer science and computer information systems
programs of study are markedly different, and involve substantially different
preparation, with overlaps. This occurs mostly at the introductory level. Numerous
studies have attempted to identify correlations between variables of a multitude of
homogeneous groups predicted on their association with computers, however, none
have attempted to identify differentiators between the two groups.
This was what the focus of this study became. There was reviews done of literature
which lead to the understanding that successful computer science majors were
generally associated with mathematical competence, or traits closely related
thereto, such as logical thinking or abstract reasoning. On the other hand, studies
dealing with success in a computer information systems major were few or fewer.
No factors emerged from those few studies taken that clearly differentiate that
group from typical norms. This then led to a cross section of demographical factors
being added to this study.

Title: Translation of computer science teaching materials into the American

Sign Language for deaf and hard of hearing students
Author: Kumawat, Prashant
The author begins by explaining the background of American Sign Language (ASL).
He notes that ASL is a completely different language from English and has its own
grammatical structure. The ASL language is always adding new signs in order to
keep up with new technologies. However, a lot of the ASL language is not properly
translated with typical computer programs. Because of this, the deaf and hard of
hearing community are not getting enough exposure to the information they need.
Teachers often use programs like PowerPoint when they are giving lectures and
while there are some speak recognition programs, it translates the teachers spoken
words to English and doesnt consider the ASL grammar rules. The purpose of this

study was to find a way to create a program that will recognize more ASL and can
properly translate it for the ASL community. There are applications that use
humanoid that can translate written and spoken words to sign language. There
are also several foundations that are working to incorporate specific computer
science terminologies into these programs. By doing so more of the ASL community
will have the opportunity to excel in the computer science industry.
