The document describes how a morphological filter can be used for event detection by detecting sudden changes in a waveform. It provides an example of adding 20db noise at 0.024 seconds to a sinusoidal waveform and then using an open-closing differential filter to detect this disturbance, showing a peak in the filtered output at the point where the noise was added.

A typical application of morphological filters is event
detection i.e. detection of sudden change in the shape of a waveform due to a fault or any other disturbance. To show that, we have taken a sinusoidal waveform in which 20 db noise is added at 0.024 sec. A simple openclosing differential filter (OCDF) is used.
