Walmartisknownforitsunfairlaborpractices,includingcappingworkinghoursat34perweek,
justbelowwhenthebenefitsofbeingafulltimeworkerkickin.Thesebenefitsincludehealth
insurance,multiplebathroombreaks,therighttoformunions,amongotherbasicneeds.

BothstoresIcontacteddeclinedtospeakabouttheissue,butfromresearchIfoundallof
thefactsIneeded.Walmartregularlyseesturnoverratesashighas44%peryear,meaning44%
oftheiremployeeswillleavebeforeoneyearofwork.Costco,ontheotherhand,regularlysees
turnoverratesaslowas6%peryear.1 Thisstarkdifferenceinemployeeretentionliessolelyin
thewagesandbenefitsthatthecompaniesgivetotheiremployees.Walmartpaysanaverageof
$8.81perhour2,whereasCostcopaysanaverageof$21.00perhour.3TheaverageWalmart
worker,workingthemaximum34hoursperweek,willmake$15,576peryear,beforeessential
expenseslikehealthinsurance.TheaverageCostcoworker,working40hoursperweek,will
make$43,680,withhealthinsuranceprovidedbythecompany.ThismeansthattheWalmart
workerwillspendaminimumof$2,676peryearonhealthinsuranceinCalifornia4,lowering
theirincometo$12,900.
