Erupting Volcano Experiment

PA Academic Science Standard- 7.2.3.B Identify basic
physical processes that affect physical characteristics of
places and regions.
Materials:
Clay or play dough
Box or tray to put volcano in
Small plastic container
Red or yellow food coloring
Baking soda
Liquid dish soap
Vinegar
Measuring cup
Plastic spoon
Procedure:
1. Build mini volcano out of play dough and place in box
2. Insert small container into opening of volcano
3. Add 2 spoonfuls of baking soda
4. Add 1 spoonful of dish soap
5. Add 8 drops of red or yellow food coloring
6. NOW FOR ERUPTION: Add 1-ounce of vinegar!
This video science lesson on the eruption of a volcano
could be put up on my class website or shown in class to
demonstrate the experiment. If watched at home, this
sheet would be sent home to parents that include the
material list and procedure steps. After returning to class,
the students would be asked questions about what they
saw in the video and if parents allowed, they could

complete this experiment at home and then share their

own results with the class!
