Down Man (who wears his underwear on top of his uniform!) and Laughing Lass (or
Lad!) (( who laughs loudly at lawbreakers)).
Using the Mystery Name, we continued rhyming, clapping syllables, identifying
beginning and end sounds, blending consonant vowel consonant words and
identifying letter sounds and names. Our Mystery names this week were Maria and
Lily.
ALL of the 2nd year students and many of the 1st years now see the connection
between the Jolly Phonics sounds and reading and writing. For explicit practice of
the sounds at home, each child has received a flip book of the Jolly Phonics sounds,
as well as a one page summary of all the sounds. We have been using these
summaries when we write at school and the children use them very productively.
We have noticed a WRITING EXPLOSION happening in the classroom recently! It
is amazing to watch the children trying to sound out words to write and supporting
each other as they go back and forth from the table to the sound wall!
We also met Stretchy Snake. Stretchy helps us to read. He reminds us to
s-t-r-e-t-c-h out the sounds found in words.
We also continued our Surprise Bag Show n Share items. Connor shared his Batman
Bear and Adrian shared his Shopkinz. Well done !
We practiced the Nursery Rhyme, Little Miss Muffet concentrating on rhyme.
Gym: After a little chicken dancing to warm up, we again played various games with
the parachute. The co-operation was beautiful!
Religion: We discussed The Golden Rule: Treat others as you would have others
treat you. We applied it to different situations that might arise in our very own
classroom.
We attended an Anti-Bullying Assembly where Mrs. Perquins Grade 6 class and
Mrs. Ferreira/Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Williams classes performed a very moving
tableau to demonstrate anti-bullying situations. There too, we learned about the
Golden Rule.
Science: A few weeks ago, Joe inspired us to plant his apple seeds. As you may
recall, ( Joe does!) we put the seeds in wet paper towel in a baggie and hung it on
the window. We discussed this week that the seeds STILL havent germinated. We
went looking for an answer! We discovered that only 30/100 seeds MAY germinate
and it may take up to a MONTH! So ! Well keep waiting and watching!
