Market Reports

Southeast Asia Fourth Largest Synthetic

Latex Polymers Market Globally

On a global scale, Southeast Asia represents the fourth largest market for synthetic
latex polymers, accounting for eight percent of the global consumption, according to the recently published Synthetic
Latex Polymers: Southeast Asia Market
Analysis and Opportunities report by
global consulting and research firm Kline
& Company. Although it is significantly
smaller than the leading global markets,
such as the U.S., Europe and China, it is still
much larger than the developing markets of
the Middle East, Brazil and India.
Within Southeast Asia, countries such
as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia account for 82 percent of synthetic latex
polymers consumption in the region.
Acrylonitrile-butadiene (AB nitrile) is
the leading product type, accounting for
44.6 percent of the total consumption in
the region by volume, followed by styrene acrylics.
Product split varies from one country to
another. Latex consumption in Malaysia
and Thailand is dominated by AB nitrile
due to the large importance of the glove
dipping application in these two countries.
The product mix in Indonesia is dominated by styrene acrylics. Thailand dominates
in consumption of pure acrylics, which
is the third-largest type of synthetic latex
polymers consumed in the region.
The product split in this region cannot be compared to any other region in the
world, said Nikola Matic, industry manager of Klines Chemicals and Materials
Practice. In other regions, paints and
coatings or paper applications usually
represent the largest consumers, while the
product split in Southeast Asia is strongly
affected by the importance of the glove
dipping industry in the region.
The supplier landscape is also very
specific in this region. Due to its fragmentation the market is characterized by
a high degree of rivalry among existing
suppliers. Moreover, the top ten suppliers account for over 60 percent of the
market with several production bases

available in the region. This competition

creates various barriers for those looking to enter the market.
Suppliers consist of two tiers of companies: multinational companies, with a diverse regional base; such as Synthomer, Dow
Chemical, BASF, Archroma and Dairen.
Regional companies, such as Eternal,
Dovechem, Bangkok Synthetics and Arindo
Pacific, complete the competitive landscape.
Due to its strong position in glove dipping, Synthomer is the largest supplier of
synthetic latex polymers, specifically AB nitrile and high solids styrene-butadiene (HSSB). BASF comes in second and is a leading
supplier of styrene acrylics in the region,
particularly in paints and coatings and construction industries. Kumho Petrochemical
is the third largest supplier of synthetic latex polymers and second-largest supplier of
AB nitrile and HS-SB in the region.
Due to a strong correlation to the
positive GDP growth in these country
markets, the Southeast Asian market for
synthetic latex polymers is forecast to
grow, increasing at a compound annual
growth rate of 6.5 percent through 2018.

Micronized PTFE Market

$868.29 Million by 2019
According to a new report by Markets
& Markets, Micronized PTFE Market
by Application (Inks, Thermoplastics,
Coatings,
Grease
&
Lubricants,
Elastomers), by Geography - Global
Forecast to 2019, the market has a projected value of $868.29 million by 2019,
signifying firm annualized growth of 7.06
percent between 2014 and 2019.
PTFE micro powder or micronized
PTFE is made from virgin polytetrafluoroethylene resin or recycled PTFE scrap.
The micronized PTFE market in AsiaPacific is one of the fastest-growing consumers across the globe and is expected to
continue the trend in the near future. AsiaPacific is the biggest market for micronized PTFE, and accounted for a share of
more than 38 percent of the total market

size in 2013 that was majorly contributed

by China. It is estimated that India is the
fastest-growing market of micronized
PTFE in the region. The high growth in
this region is mainly driven by growing
population, vast economiesdeveloped as
well as developing, favorable investment
policies, and government initiatives to
promote industrial growth.
Inks are the biggest application for
the micronized PTFE market, followed
by thermoplastic having a combined
market share of around 66 percent of
the total micronized PTFE used in 2013.
Inks require different additives in order
to achieve the right formulation for usage in different end-user industries. The
selection of additives for inks is highly
critical because any deviation from the
required properties may result in entire
formulation being destroyed. PTFE micro
powders in inks are sought out for their
value-added properties such as small particle size, abrasion/rub resistance, and
blocking.
The U.S. and China are at theforefront
of PTFE micro powder consumption,
while Germany, Japan and the U.K. are
other key markets for micronized PTFE
consumption. China is the key market in
Asia-Pacific, consuming more than half of
the demand for PTFE micro powders, followed by Japan, South Korea and India
where consumption is growing steadily.
Increase in the consumption of PTFE
micro powders for inks, coatings, and
thermoplastics has been observed in AsiaPacific due to continued industrialization
and rise in the manufacturing sector of the
region. Thermoplastic is projected to be
the fastest-growing application segment
followed by grease & lubricants between
2014 and 2019. Inks are expected to witness a slow growth due to the growing
digital media industry, which is substituting the demand for printing ink products.
PTFE micro powders in inks are sought

PPG Industries has released its annual

automotive color popularity data, showing that white continues to be the most
popular car color globally based on 2014
automotive build data.
According to PPGs global data, white
ranked first (up 3 percent from last year
to 28 percent), followed by black (18 percent), and silver and gray tied for third
(13 percent each). Silvers popularity continues to decrease across the globe, dropping seven percent over the last two years.
Car manufacturers across the world
are continually seeking new ways to create a unique appearance for models and
vehicle brands. As color selection takes
place two or three years in advance of a
model year, it is important for auto makers to combine color popularity with
global consumer trends, said Jane E.
Harrington, PPG manager, color styling,
automotive OEM (original equipment
manufacturer) coatings. Today, automotive manufacturers can choose from a
broad array of colors as well as a wide
assortment of variations of conservative
hues such as white, silver, black and gray,
and distinct effects such as micas, glass
flakes, fine bright aluminum and hueshifting pigments.
Regional trend highlights from the
2014 data include:
In North America, white remains
most popular (23 percent), followed
by black (18 percent), gray (16 percent) and silver (15 percent).
In South America, silver and white
lead in popularity (32 percent each),
followed by black (13 percent), gray
(11 percent), red (8 percent) and
blue (2 percent).
In Europe, white remains most popular (25 percent), followed by black (15
percent) and gray (14 percent), and
natural shades such as golds, beiges,
yellows, oranges and browns continue
to grow in popularity (12 percent).
In Asia Pacific markets, white remains most popular (31 percent),

followed by black (20 percent) and

silver (12 percent).
Across North American vehicle types
manufactured in 2014, PPG found that:
Ten percent of automobiles were
coated in natural hues such as golds,
beiges, yellows, oranges and browns.
Browns in particular are growing in
popularity in midsize and sport utility vehicle (SUV) models.
Sports models continue to be the
most likely to feature red, blue or
green shades. All three colors overtook gray and silver as more popular
colors for sports models.
Luxury vehicles, 24 percent of which
were white in 2014, are most likely
to feature effect finishes such as metallic or pearl tri-coat.
Looking to 2015 models, Harrington
said PPG believes drivers will continue
to see an increase in natural tones such
as coppers, oranges and browns. New
models also may be influenced by metal
tones such as bronze, pewter and rose
gold, which have had a significant influence across fashion, jewelry, furniture
and industrial design in recent years. In
addition, consumers will have access to
the same high-definition experience they
now readily consume across entertainment platforms, with access to highdepth color a deeper, richer version of
color especially in 2015 models that offer blues, reds and yellows.
In response to continued demand for
color innovation in automotive coatings,
PPG introduced 63 exterior shades to manufacturers for consideration in styling 20172018 model year vehicles. Titled Elements,
the collection includes four palettes:
Good Life captures the harmony between man-made and natural elements,
emphasizing a spirit of respect for nature
and simplicity, and enabling drivers to discover their best balance with life. The palette includes earth tones, golden yellows,
weathered browns and foliage greens.

through their connections via social media and the growing popularity of the
maker movement. The palette includes
bold bright hues, opaque pastels and urban neutrals.
Co-Leidescope reflects the growing
global eclecticism that is inclusive of
ethnicities and cultures. The palette includes spicy-hot reds, gemstone greens,
plum and indigo blues that create a bohemian flare.
Introsense represents a new direction
in minimalistic styling that blends clean,
pared-down designs with a quiet nature.
The palette includes pale-washed blues,
greens, corals and purples combined with
light, nuanced neutrals.
PPG engages a network of more than
25 color experts with a focus on automotive, architectural, aerospace and
consumer-products markets. These specialists analyze design trends, consumer
preferences and priorities across regional,
cultural and global markets to determine
factors that will influence future color
choices. The new colors and palettes introduced this year for automotive manufacturers reflect developments across
these markets and influences.

U.S. Green Building Council

Announces Extension of
LEED 2009
The U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC) will allow LEED users to register projects under the LEED 2009 rating
system until Oct. 31, 2016. The original
date for LEED 2009 registration to close
was June 15, 2015. Extending to October
2016 gives LEED users and members of
the green building industry additional
time to prepare for LEED v4, the latest version of LEED, which features increased rigor and multiple updates.
When USGBC launched LEED v4
last year, we set out with one goal in mind
to raise the bar in a way that challenges
the building industry to reach higher than

ever before. This is our nature

and USGBC and its members
collective mission, said Rick
Fedrizzi, CEO and founding
chair, USGBC. However, the market has
requested additional time to prepare for
LEED v4, so we are responding.
In a survey conducted at last weeks
Greenbuild conference, 61 percent of
respondents said they are not ready
or unsure if they are ready to pursue
LEED v4 and require additional time to
prepare. Extending LEED 2009s availability enables USGBC to work with the
broader industry within a longer time
frame to drive meaningful and comprehensive change.
Our international LEED users,
which account for some 50 percent of
new LEED registrations, have also indicated they would like to have more time
to move onto the new rating system,
Fedrizzi noted. This extension will be
especially helpful to them.
LEED v4 has been in the market for
nearly one year and will remain available
for those market leaders who are ready.
LEED v4 wasnt designed to be easy.
It is the next generation of green building, and we are confident the market will
meet us there as they have in years past,
added Fedrizzi. When USGBC first pilot tested LEED in 1998, there werent
many buildings that could qualify for
LEED certification at the Platinum level.
Now, more than 1,000 buildings have
achieved it. With LEED, we have a responsibility to set a high bar and we
know that many leaders are capable of
reaching it, presently or in the very near
future. We want to support our LEED
users as they move the market forward
with us, and allowing them to utilize the
LEED 2009 rating system for a little longer will help facilitate that.
USGBC continues to develop new
resources that support the markets adoption of LEED, added Fedrizzi. The
LEED Dynamic Plaque provides a vivid,
real-time visualization of building performance data spanning water, energy,
occupant satisfaction and more, giving
building owners critical insight into how
their building is performing. Every day,
LEED is contributing to scores of new,

innovative building technologies in the

design, manufacturing and construction
process, and has brought new, healthier
building materials to market.
LEED has facilitated spectacular advances in building technologies, integrated design and operating practices. LEED
is also largely responsible for the explosive growth of the green building sector,
which supports or creates 7.9 million jobs
across all 50 states and contributes $554
billion to the U.S. economy annually.

in the U.S., Europe and Japan.
The Acquire Plus EFX is a third generation, German-engineered spectrophotometer specifically designed for
waterborne refinish systems to improve
the accuracy of the color match. It can
measure the sparkle of flakes in coating
in addition to the respective light or darkness and color of the paint.
The Acquire Plus EFX has been designed with body shop customers in mind,
and is especially useful for those in the collision repair industry who need colors that

are ready to spray quickly. It is designed

to enable the testing and adjustment of
difficult colors to be performed faster and
easier, it has a more user-friendly interface
that comes complete with an update in adjoining software that works with the tool
for color testing and matching.

Cromax Bike Team

Netherlands Cycles for
Make-A-Wish
Cromax, one of the three global refinish
brands of Axalta Coating Systems, has
started a new initiative in the Netherlands:
the Cromax Bike Team. The teams aim is to
offer Cromax customers in the Netherlands
an accessible, easy and fun way to give back
to the community. It offers busy bodyshop
owners the opportunity to help fulfill their
corporate social responsibility.
The newly formed Cromax Bike Team
will take part in regional cycling tours every year. Then, once a year, a larger event
for the cyclists will be organized: the
Cromax Ultimate Challenge. This will see
participants setting their own individual
performance goals, racing to improve personal bests. But the real winner of all the
events will be Make-A-Wish Netherlands,
for which the team will raise money
through its corporate sponsorship, participants sponsorship and other fundraising
activities. Make-A-Wish is a non-profit
organization that fulfills the wishes of children aged between 3 and 18 years old who
suffer from life-threatening illnesses.
Tonio Amaddeo, sales manager for
Cromax in the Netherlands, says, The
original idea for the Cromax Bike Team
was born out of two pieces of information. First, we know from our experience
with our customers that we can create
positivity if we join our efforts. And secondly, many of our customers are avid
cyclists. So the aim is to get all these enthusiastic people together and organize
activities to achieve meaningful goals,
personally and for our community. From
the start, our ambition was to donate any
money we raised to a good cause.
Christel
Bockting,
Netherlands
Regional Action Coordinator, Make-AWish, says, We are very grateful for every companys work. It is so important
to us. The fact that businesses choose

Make-a-Wish is fantastic. The Cromax

Bike Team initiative really has the potential to grow into something beautiful. It
looks like, thanks to the teams efforts,
we can make many children happy. And
we have witnessed so much enthusiasm
from Cromax already, there is a clear
feeling that we are working together to
help the children.
The first Cromax Ultimate Challenge
was held in Veluwe, a central location in
the Netherlands, on Wednesday, October
29. At the event, Amaddeo presented a
check for 10,560 for the charity, on behalf of Cromax, to former leukemia sufferer and ambassador for Make-A-Wish

Axalta Presents Advances in Powder
Coatings for Corrosion Protection and
Visual Appeal
Chemists Christopher Lopez and
Reena Reddy from Axalta Coating
Systems presented their work on powder
coatings at FABTECH 2014 in Atlanta,
Georgia. The metal forming, fabricating,
welding, and finishing event is estimated
to attract 27,000 attendees. Lopezs talk
showcased the use of Axaltas fusion
bonded epoxy (FBE) powder coatings
that are designed to help protect metal
pipelines for transporting oil, gas or
water. Reddys presentation focused on
Axaltas powder coatings that have metallic visual effects for exterior and interior applications.
FBE powder coatings are widely used
to help protect pipeline structures from
corrosion, given that they are formulated
to offer enhanced physical and chemical
stability, resistance to soil stress, adhesion
to metal, and resistance to abrasion and
corrosion mitigation.
Properties of the FBE are affected by
selection of epoxy resin and other components, such as curing agents, pigments
and additives, described Lopez. When
we develop our FBE coatings, we consider not only the coating properties that

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business
Trends in 4Q14 vs. 4Q13
Each month, North Coast Research surveys a large sample of paint retailers throughout the U.S. to get a sense for
current business trends. Please note that of the three primary architectural coatings channels (paint stores, home
centers and retail distributors), this survey is primarily reflective of the distributor channel which tends to see volume
growth less than the industry; therefore, we view the results as a directional indicator more so than absolute industry
volumes. For inquiries regarding this report please contact Kevin Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or
kevin.hocevar@northcoastresearch.com.
Architectural Coatings Sales Volumes Up 1.6% in
4Q14 vs. 4Q13
According to industry participants, average sales volumes increased 1.6% in 4Q14 compared to 4Q13. This compares to record volume growth in our index of 2.6% in 2Q14 (which benefitted from the roll-out of Valspar brand paint at Ace Hardware) and
1.2% in 3Q14. Weather conditions improved across the country
as the paint season entered its busy season in 2Q14 and the
industry saw paint sales accelerate which tempered off slightly
in 3Q14 but actually picked-up again slightly in 4Q14 or at least
on a year-over-year basis. Paint volumes continue to progress in
a positive direction dating all the way back to the inception of
our coatings survey in early 2013. We are encouraged with the
positive underlying trends that have persisted through 4Q14 as
paint volumes continue to grow. Overall, 53% of respondents
witnessed an increase in paint volumes vs. only 18% that saw
paint volumes decline, which averaged out to 1.6% year-overyear volume growth with a net increase of 35%.
Price of Paint from Suppliers 4Q14 Paint Prices Largely
Flat as Prior Increases Have Anniversaried
50% of contacts noted that the price of paint from suppliers was
flat in 4Q14 vs. 4Q13 as our paint price index only rose 0.7%
which compares to average increases of 1.5%-2.0% in 2013 and
in-line with our paint price indexes of 0.8%, 1.0%, and 0.8% in
3Q14, 2Q14, and 1Q14, respectively. Bottom line, we believe
that price increases from when coatings manufacturers were
trying to recover rising raws have anniversaried so we believe
price increases are more tactical and less pronounced with 2H14
marking the first time the majority of contacts reported flattish
pricing. Overall, 42% of respondents witnessed an increase in
pricing vs. only 9% that saw pricing decline, which averaged out

to a 0.7% increase in year-over-year price with a net increase of

33% as the majority of contacts (50%) reported flat year-overyear pricing in 4Q14.
Raw Materials TiO2 Remains Benign and Crude Oil Prices
Showing Pressure on Oil-Based Raw Materials
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) prices have been stable to slightly declining in recent months following sharp declines in early 2013.
Also, propylene which is largely tied to fluctuations in crude
oil pricing has dropped significantly this week. Based on conversations with coatings raw material distributors, very few raws
have seen declines thus far due to the decline in oil prices; however, contacts believe raws will come down in 2015 (maybe as
soon as 1Q15) which could lead to meaningful price/raw benefits for manufacturers as paint pricing tends to be sticky. We
view the current price/raws relationship as a slight positive for
paint manufacturers and believe the relationship has the potential to become increasingly favorable in 2015 as oil-based raws
see more meaningful declines in price.
3-Month Outlook Outlook Favorable Despite Arrival of
Winter Months and Seasonally Slower Demand
Our proprietary Coatings 3-Month Outlook Index reached 0.36
in 4Q14 which compares to a reading of 0.57 both year-over-year
and sequentially. Due to the upcoming winter season, outlooks
at this time of the year tend to come in lower as contacts generally compare their current volume performance to the expected
volume performance over the next 3 months which are considered the slowest months of the year. Please note that the highest possible reading is +2 (indicating all contacts have a very
positive outlook) and the lowest possible reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have a very negative outlook).

we desire, such as corrosion protection, flexibility, impact resistance and chemical resistance, but also the application process
that our customers use to apply the coatings. In addition, we
also provide a variety of powder coating systems such as single
layer systems and dual layer systems to help meet our customers needs, Lopez emphasized.
The durability and stability of powder coatings can help to
maintain the structural integrity of the underlying metal that they
are designed to protect. However, when special effect metallic pigments, such as aluminum, gold, bronze or copper are used in powder coatings, the visual appeal is sometimes the customers key
property. Reddy and her team identified factors that influence the
optical properties of the metallic pigments in powder coatings.
Solid color powder coating overspray can often be recovered and returned to the coating system to help allow customers
to achieve nearly 100% use of powder coating materials. There
is a process called bonding in metallic effect coatings where the
pigments are fused to the powder particles to help allow for excellent reclamation, explained Reddy. When proper effect pigments are selected, we can have a durable coating finish with an
appealing anodized metallic visual appearance using only a single layer of powder coating. The layer is formulated to provide
good protection and an aesthetic benefit that helps to reduce
material use and coating costs for our customers, Reddy added.
Axalta powder coatings are offered to be used in many
industrial applications for aesthetics and protection purposes,
including architectural, pipeline and automotive, said Dr. Fred
Allen, Axaltas Global Technology Director of Powder Coatings.
We are committed to working closely with our customers to
understand their needs and to continue to develop products and
coating processes to help meet those needs, whether a customer
needs a coating with exceptional corrosion or impact resistance,
or a coating with visual pizzazz.
Additional Axalta powder coating experts were also scheduled to present at FABTECH 2014. Presentation titles included:
Building Blocks of a Powder Coating System, presented by Bill
Owens; Troubleshooting Your Powder Coating Operation, presented by Mike Wittenhagen; Basic Concepts of Powder Coating

waste from the workplace,
Meyer said. Our transformation engages all employees to
constantly look for opportunities to improve our process.
Meyer cited several bright spots visible in the factory. The most prominent is a work cell where we process
parts for a commercial aircraft manufacturer. Through the efforts of the
people in the work cell, we have been
able to reduce lead times for select
high-volume programs.
A new window may require thousands
of hours in design, development and qualification by PPG employees in Huntsville
before it is certified for flight. On average, aircraft windows PPG makes today
are significantly larger and more complex
than those made decades ago.
PPG has been able to maintain a
leadership position in a highly competitive industry by continually securing new customers and new programs,
Meyer said.
He credited employees for their contributions to successes with lean and new
program development. It is a testament
to the talent and dedication of the people
who have worked here through nearly
half a century that PPG continues to
grow and meet the needs of the aerospace
transparency industry.
In addition to housing production operations, the PPG facility has employees
involved in design, development, testing
and certification of new windows as well
as ongoing support of windows for aircraft operators.
Community involvement is important
to PPG, the company says, and its support includes U.S. Space & Rocket Center
Aviation Challenge program scholarships, University of Alabama-Huntsville
Girls Day on Campus scholarships and
donations to local public schools through
Public Education Leadership Community
grants of the PPG Industries Foundation
that totaled more than $65,000 in 2013.
PPG also provides community support
through employee volunteerism grants
that exceeded $30,000 in 2013, and it
annually sponsors a community scholarship for a local high school graduate. The

company and its employees rank among

the largest financial supporters of the
United Way of Madison County. PPGs
memberships include the Huntsville/
Madison County Chamber of Commerce,
Business Council of Alabama and North
Alabama International Trade Association.
PPG started construction of the
Huntsville aircraft products plant in
May 1968 on a 64-acre site and began
production April 9, 1969, with about
100 employees. The first shipment was
made May 27, 1969, of windshields for
the Convair 340 commercial airliner, for
which PPG still maintains tooling even
though it has been years since it produced
any of the windshields. Today, more than
1,000 different designs are made in any
month from windshields for commercial
airliners to helicopter windshields.

ika AG, of Baar, Switzerland, has added another Latin American aquisition to its regional expansion campaign, in Aparecida
de Goinia, Gois State, Brazil.
The latest addition will improve logistics for
increasing demand in the construction markets,
mostly concrete admixtures, waterproofing
systems and grouts, the company noted. The
new plant in Aparecida de Goina, in addition
to the acquisition of Lwart Qumica earlier this
year, is a further step in our strategic expansion
in Brazil initiated in 2012. Sika now operates
seven factories in the country, said Sika CEO
Jan Jenisch, at the November announcement of
the purchase.
In April 2014, Sika bought Lwart Qumica
Ltda., based in Lenis Paulista, Sao Paulo
State, which reported annual sales of $33
million. The company specializes in waterproofing, and has two noted brands, Lwart
Impermeabilizantes, a technical waterproofing,
and Ciplak Impermeabilizantes, a retail product. At the time, Jenisch was quoted saying,
We have plans for new production lines and
factories in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay,
Colombia and Mexico...worth $1.5 billion.
In August 2013 Sika also purchased

January 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

AkzoNobels building adhesives segment for

$318 million, including the latters premium
segment brands Schnox, Cgcol, Casco,
Synteko and EriKeeper.
The acquisition wave has produced bottom
line results. Sikas 2013 annual report indicates that Latin America posted the strongest
growth of all regions in 2013. Year-on-year,
sales were 15.1 percent higher, with every country and target market recording increases.
In 2012, Sika entered the Paraguay market
with the acquisition of Inatec SRL, based in the
capital of Asuncin and reporting annual sales
of $7 million. Inatec, founded in 1982, is a local leader in refurbishment, waterproofing and
concrete admixtures market.
In 2011, Sika purchased Colauto Adesivos
e Massas (Colauto), based in So Paulo, which
manufactures adhesives and sealants, along
with acoustic damping and structural reinforcement elements for the automotive and transportation industry. Colauto reported sales of $50
million in 2010. Among other Brazilian operations are plants in: Jaboato dos Guararapes,
in Pernambuco State; Cachoeirinha, in Rio
Grande State; and Osasco, Sao Paulo State.
In the Latin America region as a whole, Sika
lists 43 countries in which it maintains a presence. Sikas global distribution centers also include one in Panama.
Among major construction projects in Latin
America utilizing Sikas waterproofing products is Mexico Citys $20 billion Tunel Emissor
Oriente, a 40-mile long drainage line beneath
the city that was expected to be completed by
the end of 2014, helping to control flooding in
the area.
In early December 2014, Saint-Gobain,
based in Courbevoie, France, announced that it
planned to acquire the majority shares of Sika
held by the Burkard family for $2.8 billion. The
purchase would give Saint-Gobain control of
52.4 percent of all voting rights and 16.1 percent of Sikas share capital.
Sikas product lines encompass belowground and mortar waterproofing, flexible
membrane systems, liquid applied membranes,
joint sealants, waterproof ready-to-use mortars,
injection grouts and coatings. CW

How Do Low Oil Prices

Affect Raw Material Suppliers?

One of the
benefits of the
sharp fall in oil
prices in the
second half of
2014 should be
a drop in raw

or coatings producers one of the big benefits of the sharp fall in oil prices in the
second half of last year (2014) should be
a drop in raw material costs.
Some commentators are also predicting a
rise in demand due to the effect of lower oil
prices cutting the production and distribution costs of a wide range of industrial and

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

20-21 Europe 0115.indd 20

consumer products.
However, neither is likely to happen on a
significant scale in the short-term in Europe.
While oil prices have been plummeting suppliers of some coating raw materials have in fact
been announcing price increases.
At the same time, rather than boosting demand, the oil price drop has had the opposite
effect in Russia, which has been one of Europe
fastest growing coatings markets. Instead the
country which relies heavily on revenues from
oil and gas exports is expected to be stuck in a
recession this year (2015).
Nonetheless if oil prices stay at the current

Europe International Coatings Scene

low level or fall further, analysts are forecasting that in the longer term they could
start bringing down raw materials costs
in many sectors.
Continued low prices will create a
glut in oil and its derivatives following
a flow of investment funds into the sector in recent years and an expectation
of continued high growth in China,
explained Paul Hodges, chairman of
International e-Chem, a London-based
chemicals consultancy.
Raw materials suppliers will have to
cut their prices because otherwise they
will not have any customers, he added.
This will first require the removal of a
number of obstacles in the supply chain
which have curbed the availability of
some coatings raw materials.
Since the 2008 financial crisis in
Europe, producers of raw materials like
basic chemicals have tended to keep low
stocks, said Amit Sharda, chemicals
analyst at Oxford Economics, Oxford,
England. This has resulted in a lack
of sufficient flexibility in the system for
downstream users to stock up their own
raw materials in order to take advantage
of upstream price decreases.
The result has been that even at times
of economic crisis or supply/demand imbalances prices have gone up, sometimes
steeply.
As coatings manufacturers, we would
of course, expect to see a knock on effect from the falling price of oil onto raw
materials in the wider market, said Tom
Bowtell, chief executive of the British
Coatings Federation (BCF)
(But) raw material prices for the
coatings and inks sector have been rising
almost continuously since 2002 and increased by well into double figures in the
two peak years of 2008 and 2011 while
other years also showed steady increases, he continued. Many solvents were
typically 30 percent to 40 percent higher
in price (in 2012 compared with 2012).
It is only in the last 18 months that we
have seen any real softening of purchase
prices and even this means only a 3% fall
in overall raw material prices in the last
year - a drop in the ocean compared with
what has gone before.
Raw material suppliers which are

currently attempting to push up their

own sales prices are blaming other factors outside the oil value chain.

If oil prices stay at

the current level or
fall further, analysts
forecast that in the
long term they could
start bringing down
raw material costs in
many sectors.
Clariant, the Swiss-based coatings
materials supplier, for example, said
that increases in operating costs was
the main reason behind the announcement in late 2014 of a 10 percent rise
in prices of additives for coatings and
other products made by its Plastics and
Coatings segment.
Most of our raw materials in Plastics
& Coatings are at least 3 4 steps downward in the value chain (from oil), said
Ernesto Dongiovanni, Clariants head of
marketing, polymer additives. Therefore
the impact of a lower oil price is substantially less pronounced as other factors-inflation in labor costs etc.-- outweigh
this effect.
Prices in the coating raw materials
supply chain have also been deeply influenced in recent years by cutbacks in
capacity following the 2008 recession
and a lack of investment in new plants
or expansions.
This is reflected in variations in price
trends between segments. Figures from
the European Chemical Industry Council
(Cefic), Brussels, which include downstream sectors like coatings, show that in
the first three quarters of last year (2014)
chemical producer prices dropped 1.7 percent, but petrochemical prices declined
by over double that level while those for

January 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

20-21 Europe 0115.indd 21

polymers dipped by only 0.3 percent.

Europes ageing chemical plants are
vulnerable to supply interruptions which
has prevented some prices decreasing by
as much as would be normally expected
after a drop in oil prices. There have
been a relatively high number of breakdowns, and outages in basic chemical
plants over the last few months, says
one chemicals analyst.
Some commentators are predicting
that due to the lower margins stemming
from lower oil prices, there will now be
more plant closures. The rating agency
Moodys reckons that as much as 6 percent of European capacity for ethylene,
the building block for organic chemicals,
could be closed down.
Cefic was predicting in December
that total output of chemicals including
downstream products like coatings will
rise only 1 percent in 2015around the
same level as in the previous year (2014).
Monthly data point to continued anaemic growth, with energy-intensive petrochemicals output falling, said Hubert
Mandery, Cefics director general.
Nonetheless there has been some
evidence of a sudden rise in business
confidence. In October the EU chemical industry confidence indicator (CCI)
soared to its highest level since July 2011.
Stronger European demand for coatings later this year will be offset by depressed sales in countries like Russia.
Tikkurila, the Finnish coatings producers
which has a big presence in Russia, has issued a profits warning because of reduced
demand in the country and a sharp depreciation of the Russian rouble.
There could also be decreased coatings
exports to oil producing areas outside
Europe like the Middle East, where the
construction sector has been booming.
The tight supply/demand balance in
chemicals in Europe is likely to trigger
a rise in some raw material prices in the
event of any surge in coatings sales in the
region. This could happen before low oil
prices start to have a major influence on
raw material costs.
Even if there would be an impact on
raw materials prices from lower oil prices, its effects could be delayed by several
quarters, said Dongiovanni. CW

the global LNG export market against the U.S.,
which targets to export an estimated 70tcf to Asia
by 2020 and also Russia currently in the process of shifting from piped gas to LNG. The East
African countries are hoping to join the LNG export market when liquefaction plants under construction are completed between 2019 and 2021.
International oil and gas companies among
them UKs BG Group, Ophir Energy, ExxonMobil,
Statoil, Anadarko and Eni have found huge natural gas reserves in East Africa and have proposed
huge projects to commercialize the gas findings.
The infrastructure is expected to consume a substantial amount of protective coating around the
huge amount of steel to be used in the development of the facilities and also on the LNG vessels
so as to delay and limit the effects of fire attacks
and corrosion from both the sea water and soil in
case of gas pipeline.
New natural gas discoveries in East Africa
have spurred liquefaction plant proposals

though considerable risks abound in this untested region, said the report by IGU. Prolific resource discoveries in Mozambique and Tanzania
have led to the proposal of seven trains totalling
35 million metric tons/annum (MTPA) though
potential exists for major expansions.
After the discovery of 100tcf of natural gas
in Mozambiques Rovuma Basin, U.S. firm
Anadarko and Italys Eni have announced progress in the construction of four LNG trains with
a capacity of 20 million metric tons per a year,
making it the largest LNG export plant after
Qatars Ras Laffan according to IGU.
Anadarko and Eni have awarded front end engineering and design contract to a consortium of
CB&I and Chiyoda Corporation for the liquefaction plant. The LNG plant will get supplies of natural gas from Anadarkos offshore Area 1 gas fields
including Prosperidade and Golfinho. Additional
natural gas will come from Enis offshore Area 4
gas fields including Mamba gas fields.
The liquefaction plant will come with infrastructure requiring special coatings to protect
them from high temperatures, corrosion, fire
and aggressive chemical compounds. Some of
the LNG plant facilities that would require
substantial coatings supplies include storage
tanks, open gas turbines at power generation,
BoG handling, open rack vaporizer, jetty MEG
(Mono Ethylene Glycol)/ water mixture regeneration and storage, slug catcher, gas pre-treatment facility, refrigerant and storage facilities,
flare tower, liquefaction and fractionation installations and condensate stabilizers.
To protect these LNG facilities would require deployment of various coating processes depending on the facility and its use. Such
processes could include cathodic protection,
thermally sprayed aluminium and watertight
insulation and cladding.
LNG tanks require exterior coatings to protect
them from the coastal environment and also internal tank coatings to protect the ships to be used in
transporting the LNG to the international market.
Concrete coatings and insulation and also concrete
refurbishment provide additional opportunities for
coating companies in the protective market.
A similar LNG plant was completed in 2012
in neighboring Angola under a contract by U.S.

firm Bechtel. The plant, Angola LNG, located in Soyo and which was developed
by a consortium of Sonangol, Chevron,
BP, Total, and ENI, provided yet another
opportunity for coatings contractors.
For example, German firm EUROPIPE
worked on a contract awarded French energy major Total for the laying of pipes for a
pipeline project starting from Block 17, operated by the oil explorer and producer with
a 40 percent interest, as part of a network
supplying gas to the Angolan LNG plant.
EUROPIPE, which says it specializes
in large-diameter welded steel pipes for
extreme applications, has supplied nearly 20,000 tons of pipe for the $9 billion
LNG project, from its manufacturing line
at Mlheim mill. Mulheim Pipecoatings
provided the inside and protective outside coatings for the pipes linking natural
gas fields to the Angolan LNG plant.
And in Mozambique, Italian natural
gas producer Enis affiliate, Eni East Africa
SpA, announced in October it has awarded the KD Consortium, consisting of KBR
and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine
Engineering Company, Ltd, a front end
engineering design (FEED) contract for
the countrys first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility for the Coral South
Development Project in the country.
The company said with the award,
the KD consortium will be one of three
consortia competing for the engineering,
procurement, construction, installation
and commissioning (EPCIC) contract to
build the new floating LNG facility for
Eni East Africa and its partners to develop the hydrocarbon discovery in the
Rovuma Basin in Mozambique.
Developing a cost-effective solution
for the first FLNG vessel in Mozambique
was the rationale for developing the KD
consortium, said Stuart Bradie, KBR president and CEO. The consortium allows us
to leverage the strength of both companies
to provide the client the best choice for the
EPCIC portion of the project.
The KD Consortium will provide
the FEED for the Topsides, Hull and
Subsea for the Floating LNG facility. The
Topsides and Turret are being designed in
KBRs Leatherhead office while the hull
and marine system are being engineered
in DSMEs facility in Seoul, South Korea,

KBR said in a statement.

The FLNG facility will be a turret
moored double-hull floating vessel, on
which gas receiving, processing, liquefaction,
and offloading facilities will be mounted together with LNG and condensate storage.
Although it has not been confirmed
which company will be contracted to provide protective coatings for the new FLNG,
the development of the vessel adds to a new
a growing segment in Africas gas sub sector.
A few international coating companies have benefitted from Africas growing natural gas sub sector and have been
involved in major coating contracts.
For example, UKs Promat was contracted by heavy equipment manufacturer IHI
Group, which won a contract to develop a
new LNG train by Algerias Sonatrach, to
supply its Cafco FENDOLITE MII system
as a primary part of the scheme to protect
the LNG facility near Arzew city.
The capacity of the Arzew GL2-Z,
which has a design capacity of 370.8 billion cubic feet/year, is being expanded to
meet the increasing world demand for
natural gas supplies.
According
to
Promat, Cafco
FENDOLITE MII is the industry-leading,
passive fire protection system and has
been used to protect steel structures and
vessel skirts from fire attack at Arzew.
The more than 1,500 tons of Cafco
FENDOLITE MII was used on the project
and applied by the Franco-Algerian fire
protection specialists Travomed Prezioso
JV according to a statement by Promat.
Promat was selected to supply Cafco
FENDOLITE MII for this project because
they provide unequalled service, quality,
fitness for purpose, whole life value and
availability that has been demonstrated
in service worldwide over 30 years, the
company said in a statement.
In Nigeria, leading manufacturer, developer and distributor of paints and coatings, Berger Paints Nigeria Plc, has been
awarded a contract to supply coatings for
two new Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas
(NLNG) carriers to be built by Hyundai
Heavy Industries in Korea. The Berger
Paints contract is for the supply of 83,000
litres of paint valued at $1 million.
Berger Paints products are in compliance with global standards and are at par

with those produced by KCC in Korea,

which will be used by Hyundai Heavy
Industries in the coating of two new
NLNG vessels, said Henry Agbodjan,
head of shipping at NLNG in early
December. KCC Corporation is a partner
of Berger Paints Nigeria Plc.
More Nigerian paints firms have also
got a share of the slice of the project to
supply six LNG vessels to NLNG.
Bonny Gas Transport (BGT) Limited,
a subsidiary of NLNG awarded a contract for the building of the new vessels
to South Korean shipbuilders, Samsung
Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Heavy
Industries. The contract provided a local
content clause for Nigerian companies to
participate in exporting materials including protective coatings for the project.
NLNG had earlier confirmed that
Paints and Coatings Manufacturers
Nigeria (PCMN) Limited had also been
picked to supply up to 388,000 liters of
paint to Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.
Other material suppliers for the LNG
vessels include Metec West Africa, which
has exported 210 tonnes of anodes, valued
at $2.5 million and Nexans Kabelmetal
Limited, which shipped 180,000 meters
of cables valued at more than $1 million
to the South Korean shipyards.
By the end of this project, NLNG
would have helped the concerned local
companies acquire the necessary capacity
and know how to successfully compete
with peers from all around the developed
world, said NLNG.
In the past, Berger Paints only exported paints to Ghana. This recent export of
our products to South Korea is a major
milestone for our company, and we are
very excited for this remarkable opportunity, said Berger Paints managing director and chief executive officer, Tor Nygard.
The International Gas Union says
LNG floating systems are proposed to
be used in many more countries, including several in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Although many challenges face the
development of LNG infrastructure, the
speed and relatively lower cost of bringing a floating import terminal online may
improve the outlook for these regions,
said IGU in its 2014 LNG report. CW

Business Corner Strategies & Analysis

Managing Your Potential,

As A So-Called Middle Manager

The first element
to recognize
in seeking
your desired

is to stop using
the success of
others as your
guideposts.

ou may have moved product into the

marketplace well above plan; you may
have scored heavily by identifying unmet needs and bringing new innovative products to commercialization at record rates; and
you may have even been awarded exceptional
performance bonuses BUT . . . . . . you are discouraged with not only your job and career
advancement, but your happiness and satisfaction. If this is YOU, we see several straight forward considerations for you.
The first element to recognize in seeking
your desired job happiness/satisfaction ratio is to stop using the successes of others
as YOUR guideposts. Much like fingerprints,
they have their own set of individual success needs. Like fingerprints, each of us has
our own set of built-in success quotients
and our individual objective is to uncover
those uniquenesss.
As you might expect one to say but I will
say it anyway . . . managing your career is your
responsibility and no one else. With this totally
in mind, the following steps, taken very objectively, will help:
Know thyself: Record the three to four
greatest . . . . strengths, adequacies and weaknesses YOU honestly feel are accurate descriptions of YOU. Then identify a couple of people
you feel know you well and will be harshly
critical and share your self-appraisal with them.
Be receptive to this input.
Then write down what you truly enjoy
doing. Fit that honest enjoy doing picture
into another picture . . . . that is, what does
my dream job look like? Once you have selected your model job, you will have to begin from scratch. We are not saying this is
easy, because its not easy but once youve
made the ideal picture of your success
pattern you will have emotional strengths
built-in, that will assist you in making lob
cross-over decisions.

Stand-out at important activities: First,

identify the 4-5 critical activities vital for success in your preferred or current position. Then
develop a plan for excelling in these activities.
Display Temperament and Control:
Temperament (character) and Control differentiates between good and great performance.
There are several methods to be used to exhibit control:
Placing interests where they belong:
Place your interests subordinate to both
your company and your colleagues . . . .
exhibit by doing things for others demonstrating your willingness to sacrifice
for the company.
Assume an owners frame of mind: Always
asking yourself, if I were the ultimate decision-maker, how would I act and what
would my expectations be?
Willing to make tough recommendations:
Always make recommendations that will
benefit the companys overall performance.
Sometimes, these recommendations may be to
your disadvantage but you must take the long
view in these cases.
LEADERSHIP: Speak up despite taking an
unpopular view. Your Management very much
wants unorthodox opinions so they can make
better choices. If you constantly play it safe
instead of asserting your sincere opinions, you
may hit a plateau in your career. CW

Sico Paint Launches MUSE

Paint-and-Primer-In One Product

Sico Paint has launched a new product in

response to the growing trend of vibrant
home decor.
The Sico MUSE paint-and-primer-inone product features a TOUCH RESIST
TECHNOLOGY paint innovation that
gives color surfaces richness and depth
while providing maximum resistance to
scratches, marks and stains.
If youre going to paint with color,
this is the product to use, said Mylne
Gvry, marketing manager for Sico paint,
a brand of PPG Architectural Coatings.
She explained that Muse paint is Sico
paints highest quality, best performing
and most sophisticated product to date.
Because the product is ultra-smooth and
deep in hue, it will add a wow factor and
an unbelievably luxurious, fashionable
and artistic feel to any room.
With the tagline Inspired by the
grandeur of your ideas, the product was
introduced to meet increasing consumer
demand for high-quality, long-lasting
color-infused paint, Gvry explained.
Bolder colors are more in vogue than
ever in home decor even neutrals are
more colorful than in the past, she said.
This is a clear indication that people
are becoming comfortable expressing
themselves with color in their homes, and
weve delivered a product that enables
their creativity to come alive in the most
beautiful way.
Gvry pointed to technology, such as
animated computer screens and digital
art-infused consumer goods lining store
shelves, as the reason people are gravitating toward color. As well, from photorich social networks to trendy pastimes
like digital scrapbooking, consumers are
getting used to letting their personalities
shine through and its spilling over into
home decor choices, she said.
With the launch of Sico Muse paint,
Gvry explained that room makeovers
are easier and the results far more striking when you start with a rich-colored
canvas in place of a blank one. She offered

this advice on decorating with color:

Red: Known to energize and increase
appetite, red is a good choice for kitchens and dining areas particularly warm,
brown-toned red, which breathes new life
into tired wood or white cupboards. In
smaller spaces red works best painted on
one or two walls for effect, while in large
areas the color can be featured throughout the room. Coupled with a glitzy glass
backsplash, it gives kitchens a modern
look, yet appears more traditional paired
with faux stone. In a dining room, a red
wall paired with creamy yellow-white
wainscoting creates an ideal backdrop for
a trendy harvest table.
Yellow: With the growing popularity
of all things bohemian, bold yellow is
making a comeback. Bright, warm yellow makes a strong starting point for a
cheerful and welcoming space. For a dramatic effect, dress up a room with yellow
walls by introducing hot pink, teal blue,
deep purple and lime green accents such
as fringed throw cushions, floral drapery,
soft shag area rugs or chintz china pieces.
For furnishings, consider rustic antiques,
padded headboards, tufted foot stools
and painted wood the busier the pattern, the better.
Grey: At one time, grey was considered dreary, but times have changed.
This years it color, grey especially
when used in different levels of intensity
within a room creates a chic, sophisticated look. Ideal for a bedroom or living
room, charcoal walls provide a dramatic
feel that can be complemented easily with
paler grey furnishings and accessories.
Extremely versatile, grey goes just as well
with metallic finishes as it does wood,
stone and ceramics, and it is livened up
with shades of yellow, blue and coral.
Blue: Deep, saturated turquoise blue is
on trend this year and provides a dramatic yet calming background to any room,
particularly living areas and bathrooms.
Paired with grey and yellow accents, blue
walls make a family room warm and

inviting. In the bathroom, blue goes well

with brown, yellow and green to create
a breezy, light and airy spa sensation. To
bring out the best of this years popular
blue, consider light grey carpet, hardwood
or wood laminate for the rooms flooring.
Available in soft matte and soft gloss
finishes, Sico Muse paint a 100 percent
acrylic, low-odor interior latex paint is
mildew-resistant, highly washable and
durable with excellent hiding power and
stain resistance, even on bold colors.
Available in all colors of Sico paint, the
new product can be found at more than
1,200 retailers across Canada.

Axalta Launches
Formaldehyde-Free
Electrical Steel Varnish
Axalta Coating Systems has launched its
new generation C6 electrical steel varnish Voltatex 1262. Part of the Voltatex
family of electrical insulation products,
Voltatex 1262 is targeted for use in special applications for large hydro and
turbo generators where no formaldehyde
degassing is desired.
The new product is designed to aid
the maintenance process of large generators. Formaldehyde degassing in enclosed generators makes it necessary to

perform time-consuming and cost-intensive air-flushing processes. And breathing

protection systems are required before
entering the generator areas for maintenance inspections.
Andreas Vendler, Axaltas technical
product manager for the Voltatex business said, Because Voltatex 1262 is nonacidic and formaldehyde-free, it helps
to reduce the costly shutdown periods
during maintenance inspections, helping
to increase the efficiency of energy generation. Its water-based formulation is
REACH compliant.
Voltatex 1262 has been designed to
meet most of the key environmental,
health and safety requirements in Europe,
the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and
the Americas.

improvement as a result of growth in new construction
and an increase in new home sales. The focus for interior
architectural coatings manufacturers is to stay on the cutting
edge, by developing color palettes that are in line with the latest trends in fashion, art and technology all while delivering
premium performance characteristics.

As the housing market has improved, so has the demand

for paint, said Jeff Spillane, Benjamin Moores senior manager,
training implementation. There has been a continued growth
in single and multi-unit homes which has helped spark business. This new construction has also driven an increase in existing home sales. We expect this growth to continue in 2015 and
expect to see a greater spend in facility maintenance business.

Blue Paisley was selected as PPGs Color of the Year.

This sentiment was echoed by Scott Sinetar, vice president,

Architectural Coatings, North America, PPG Industries.
The architectural coatings industry is in a better place in
2014 versus prior years because of the improvements in housing formation. All housing and commercial indicators call for
continued growth along with commercial construction gaining
traction, he said.

Color Trends for 2015 and Beyond

When selecting an interior paint, color is first and foremost, the
most important factor. Consumers make selections based on
personal preference and may also find inspiration through design experts recommendations.
Benjamin Moore recently announced its 2015 Color Trends,
including the Color of the Year which the company said can be
the main color or highlight in any room: Guilford Green HC116. Through the Color & Design teams research and travel
across the globe, four color families emerged suggesting bold
and confident color choices: berry, green, blush and blue paint
color collections that reflect a sense of optimism.
According to Benjamin Moores Color & Design team,
Guilford Green HC-116 complements both modern and traditional styles in a seamless manner. In addition to unveiling the
Color of the Year, Benjamin Moore introduced Color Trends

2015, a curated palette of 23 colors consisting of beautiful

green, blue, blush and berry shades that can transform a space.
Benjamin Moore said it continues to be an influential leader in
paint color for homeowners and designers by forecasting colors
and combinations that are truly livable and practical for every
style and home.
One trend we see is the concept of monochromatic colors
using warm, cool, dark and light layers of the same hue to give a
room a very distinctive look, said Spillane. Employing various
sheens creates another layer of texture in a space as well.
Taking cues from trends in fashion, textiles and the arts, the
Benjamin Moore Color Studio team spotted the common thread
of balanced palettes and a design sentiment that continued to reflect a sense of optimism. Guilford Green harmoniously complements the Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2015 palette, which
also celebrates the concept of monochromatic colors using
warm, cool, dark and light layers of the same hue in the home.
With a monochromatic color scheme throughout a floor plan,
each room can have a very distinctive look making it almost imperceptible that there is a single hue at work. Exploring monochromatic colors allows for a fresh approach in designing a
room as a single hue, color combinations are endless. Employing
various sheens creates another layer of texture in a space.
PPG recently announced that Blue Paisley, which the

PPG Launches Possibility Collection Featuring Four New Colors Palettes

PPGs color stylists collaborated to develop
four new palettes featured in its new Possibility collection. The four trend palettes
in The Voice of Color program for 20152016 are available at dealers of PPG Pittsburgh Paints products across the U.S.
These palettes are:
Good Life
Possible Harmony
This trend is the birth child of manmade
coastal regions and earthy natural environments, complete with an earthen
spirit, respect for simplicity and a mission
to uncover an optimal balance with life.
Bringing fresh floral colors from nature
together with soft neutrals from the earth
and rich blues from the sea encourages
the expression of natural ruggedness in
the home. Earthen composite materials,
often derived from organic sources, serve
as inspiration for this palettes variety of
naturally bold hues.
Unpretentious browns and pinks accompanied by coastal blues and yellows
create a lively and natural full color palette. A few of the colors in this 30-shade
palette are Honey Graham (PPG10695), Silver Dollar (PPG1022-3), Bordeaux
(PPG1055-7), Bermuda (PPG1150-6) and
Sheffield (PPG1139-5).
Im Pulse
Creative Possibilities
This palette is self-centric, bold, expressive and artistic, dominated by its variety of bold hues and flanked by its softened brights and urban neutrals. The
concrete grays pair beautifully with the
intensely colorful hues, while the softer
brights are particularly impactful against
the demanding blacks. Creative spirits
from around the world with an interest
in manipulating, altering and producing
digitally-sourced designs will be drawn
to the vast color offerings in this palette.
References to pop, abstract, impressionist, classic and digital art can be found in
the intense yellows, hot blues, burnt pinks
and sultry greens.

with a twist on neutrals bring the 30-shade
color collection together to create a dar

ing palette full of digital inspiration. The

versatile hues included in this palette are
capable of being used alone or as part
of a layered design. Several of the colors
in this palette are Briquette (PPG12186), Orange Poppy (PPG1196-7), Crushed
Pineapple (PPG1213-7), Leap Frog
(PPG1225-7), Sorcerer (PPG1240-5) and
Whirlwind (PPG1013-3).
Co-Leidescope
Worldly Possibilities
This trend focuses on a growing global
eclecticism that is ethnicity-inclusive, culture-inclusive and co-existence-inclusive.
The glamorous fusion of worldly possibilities is conveyed in the deep jewel-toned
purples and greens, spicy reds and golden yellows. A balanced mix of colored
darks and faded midtones are a result
of inspiration sought from the time-worn
hues of once-brightly-colored mosaics,
encountered by countless individuals in
their travels. The palette as a whole draws
inspiration from multiple worldly regions
and influences, while its luxurious overtone adds charisma that lends well to the
ever-evolving gypsy jetsetter, or gypset, consumer.
The palette features the Color of the
Year, Blue Paisley (1238-6). Some of the
other 29 colors featured in this palette
are Ruby Lips (PPG1052-7), Gothic Gold
(PPG1208-7), Blue Bayberry (PPG1149-7),
Deep Emerald (PPG1148-7), Royal Indigo (PPG1174-7) and Night Rendezvous
(PPG1037-5).
Introsense
Quality Possibilities
The blending of nature, solid design and
technology creates the Introsense palette, full of calming, soulful shades. Zen
neutrals coordinated with easygoing
blues and indulgent pinks simplify the
homeowners quest for privacy, anonymity, timelessness, quality and peace. Part
of the uniqueness of this 28-shade palette
stems from its nuanced neutral shades,
which are actually less-than-neutral colors
such as pinks, purples and blues, mellowed by their gray, brown, black, taupe
and beige undertones. The other stand

out feature of this palette is its soft tints, created to add an inimitable factor of serene
sensibility. As a whole, this trend palette
serves as an introduction to a new direction in minimalistic styling that blends clean,
pared-down designs with quiet nature.
The soft blues, greens, pinks, purples
and coral hues paired against the light
neutrals yields a soothing new direction
that plays out in architecture, automobiles,
tech products and more. Some paint colors included in this palette are Lost Love
(PPG1047-2), Ancestral (PPG1047-4), Irradiant Iris (PPG1171-3), Spruce Shade
(PPG1136-5), Sahara Sun (PPG1064-6) and
Carob Chip (PPG1047-7).
Each of the four Possibility trend palettes fully embodies the unique consumer striving to express optimism for the
year ahead through home decor selections. While technology has become an
inevitable component of daily life, each of
the four themes personifies technology in
its own unique way. For example, Good
Life incorporates the styling of technology for purposes of making usage easier
and friendlier by implementing simple
shapes in optimistic colorways. Im Pulse
recognizes that just as technology allows
users to add and update in real-time,
homeowners should be able to add and
upgrade various elements of design as
they please. The realization that tech
products now fulfill a fashion need rather
than a mere functionality need encompasses the global traveling persona of the
Co-Leidescope theme. Introsense recognizes that the styling emphasis of tech
products generally takes rounded form to
indicate softness rather than intimidation.
The 2015-2016 Possibility trend palettes, along with 2,000 additional colors
in The Voice of Color program, are available in any of the PPG Pittsburgh Paints
lines, including PURE PERFORMANCE

company described as an almost-but-not-quite royal shade of
blue, as the 2015 color of the year. Experts from PPG Industries,
makers of PPG Pittsburgh Paints products, anticipate Blue
Paisley will play a prominent role in home decor trends for the
coming year as homeowners look to positively influence their
lives and decisions with vibrant hues.

The architectural coatings

industry is in a better place in
2014 versus prior years because
of improvements in housing
formation... indicators call for
continued growth...
According to color experts from PPG, homeowners are seeking home decor inspiration from multiple regions and influences, capable of transforming the home into a glamorous fusion of
worldly possibilities. Selecting colors that signify a global eclecticism, such as Blue Paisley (PPG1328-6), aids in the translation
of a homeowners rich collection of experiences into equally rich
home decor options. Blue Paisley is one of the featured colors
presented in Possibility, a collection of four new color palettes
showcasing the 2015-2016 color trends for THE VOICE OF
COLOR program.

Looking Beyond Color

While color is the main consideration when selecting an interior coating, savvy customers also look for a wide variety of
performance characteristics such as durability, scrub resistance
and low odor.
Customers are always looking for a good balance of both
performance and value, said Spillane. At Benjamin Moore, we
are strongly focused on developing high performing products.
Customers need to be aware of paint marketing that focuses on
just one aspect of a products performance rather than the overall performance. If a product does something very well it will
generally lack in other performance characteristics.
PPG is always looking for ways to make the painting experience better for professionals and consumers. Were always
looking for the next generation product and application from
overtly good looks to enhanced performance and protection,
said Sinetar. Were also looking to push the limits with our new
products and make them even more versatile for the end user.
One of the most important trends for interior coatings is
greener products. Consumers are looking to buy products
featuring low odor and low volatile organic compounds (VOC).
Spillane said that the Benjamin Moore portfolio is one of the
greenest in the industry. As of the end of the 2014, all of our

premium and super premium interior architectural coatings will

be zero VOCs, he added. Our Natura product has the lowest
emission of any coating available. As we look to the future we
are focused on product that may be more sustainable with a
reduction on petroleum by products.
Some of the latest product launches from Benjamin Moore
include: Regal Select REVIVE, Ultra Spec 500, ADVANCE and
Grand Entrance.
Zero-VOC Ultra Spec 500 is a professional-quality interior coating designed to meet the needs of professional
painting contractors, facility managers and property managers. Available in a wide range of sheens and unlimited
colors, the product features excellent hiding and touchup
properties, good flow and leveling, easy application and
soap-and-water cleanup.
Benjamin Moore also recently expanded its presence on the
West Coast with a new super distribution center in Oakland,
California. Scheduled to open in early 2015, this facility will
support the distribution of all Benjamin Moore & Co. products
and eventually serve as the key distribution center for the companys growing network of Asia Pacific retailers and distributors, said Spillane. Its also the first-ever Silver LEED certified
site for Benjamin Moore & Co.
PPG has launched a number of new products for interior
coatings. Olympic HOME interior latex paint is a new line of
flat and semi-gloss paint available exclusively at Lowes stores
nationwide. The new Home paint provides professionals and
DIY homeowners with a durable, easy-to-apply and clean product at a value price.
Sico Paint, a brand of PPG architectural coatings, recently
launched two new products. Sico Evolution is an easy-to-apply, ultra-washable and high hiding paint. According to the
firm, Sicos Evolution line sets new standards for quality when
it comes to interior latex paints. With each coat, its unique formula with DurabiliT polymers creates a protective shield for
added durability.
The Sico MUSE paint-and-primer-in-one product features a
TOUCH RESIST TECHNOLOGY paint innovation that gives
color surfaces richness and depth while providing maximum
resistance to scratches, marks and stains.
Muse is Sico paints highest quality product to date. With the
tagline Inspired by the grandeur of your ideas, the product
was introduced to meet increasing consumer demand for highquality, long-lasting color-infused paint.
In a recent press release Mylne Gvry, marketing manager
for Sico said, Bolder colors are more in vogue than ever in
home decor even neutrals are more colorful than in the past.
This is a clear indication that people are becoming comfortable
expressing themselves with color in their homes, and weve delivered a product that enables their creativity to come alive in
the most beautiful way.
In 2014, PPG announced the acquisitions of Painters
Supply, Westmoreland Supply, Masterwork and Comex. PPG
also announced that it took a minority equity position in The
Coatings Alliance. CW

Additives Industry

Update

Pricing stability and a unique market position have industry suppliers hopeful for the
coming year.
Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

hough the additives market has been unstable in recent

years, global economic stability has given suppliers in
this industry cause for optimism.
According to Charles Giaudrone, general manager of
Coatings at Eastman Chemical Company, the global market for
additives grew in 2014 but varied by region.
Above global average growth occurred in Asia, North

America and portions of the Middle East and Eastern Europe,

Giaudrone said.
Shenton King, director of marketing at King Industries, said
that his company expects to see overall growth in the coming year.
We experienced healthy growth in 2014 and remain optimistic for a successful 2015, he said. We experienced continued
interest and growth in our core technologies as well as increased

developments utilizing our new technology launched over the
past several years, including mercury and tin free catalysts, catalysts for low temperature cure, and new applications for our resin
modifiers which improve the properties of durable thin films.
Growth in the additives market hinges somewhat on raw
material costs. In recent years, prices have been unpredictable, though numbers seem to have stabilized alongside the
global economy.
Bob Ruckle, global marketing and sales manager at Siltech
Corporation said there has been some upward pressure on
raw materials, especially silicone, and some additive manufacturers have raised prices. At Siltech we raised our schedule
prices three percent, he said.
Giaudrone pointed out that additives are somewhat less sensitive to economic instability because of the relatively low levels in which they are used in formulas.
While raw material and energy dynamics are part of our
day-to-day business environment, additives are less sensitized
to such volatility, he said. Additionally, additives are typically used for a specific function or to solve a specific problem,
making their value-in-use in formulations higher relative to
other components.
King echoed that sentiment. An additive that solves a problem or outperforms the current state of the art will always be
competitive in the marketplace, because high quality, high performance, reliability and excellent technical service are highly
valuable, he said.
He added that, while raw material prices were fairly stable
in 2014, the markets previous instability has forced companies
to be more creative.
It is always a challenge to prevent your core products from
being effected by raw material price increase, he said. Our
ability to continually improve and manage other operational
costs allows us to have the flexibility to stay competitive and
profitable in the marketplace.

Formulators need to be cognizant of the current and future

regulatory environment, he said. Additionally, it is very important to consider security of supply as many additives play a
critical role in the functionality of the paint. A consistent quality
of raw materials from a vertically integrated production base offers the best security towards achieving performance and value
targets in formulated products.
King said that quality, performance, efficiency and sustainability are key considerations for a formulator. However, he
added that the right relationship between formulator and supplier is often the key to success.
The technical service capabilities of the additive supplier is
very important, he said. Choosing an additive supplier with
no technical service capabilities is a good way to waste money
and miss opportunities.
A formulator must use high quality additives for high performance applications. Choosing a high-quality manufacturer of additives to supply your business is of critical importance. Not only does
it guarantee performance, but it guarantees high quality production
processes with emphasis on excellent environmental and safety and
health practices, ensuring stability and sustainability, he said.

New Technologies and Products

Like any other market, the additives industry is advancing
alongside technological advancements. King said that the paint

Considerations
When choosing an additive, there are a multitude of variables
to consider. According to Ruckle, there are two traps to avoid
during the process.
One trap is to start your formulating work with a formulation that already contains additives but not challenge yourself if
they are still needed in the new formula, he said. Additives are
a small part by weight but a large part of the performance, they
need to be an integral part of the evaluations.
He continued, The other trap is not considering that additives are multi-functional, if the data sheet says flow and
leveling agent that product will lower surface tension but
will likely also affect foam, wetting, slip, overcoatability and
many other properties. It is key to understand how the additive will affect all of the properties. Effective supplier tools
provide that information.
Eastmans Giaudrone pointed out that both security and ever-changing international regulations are extremely important
in this market.

and coatings market has responded extremely well to the global call to action to reduce VOCs and the use of harmful mercury
and tin additives.
We recognized this trend over decades and responded with
a line of resin modifiers (K-FLEX) and mercury replacement
catalysts (K-KAT), which have both experienced healthy growth
in recent years, he said.
King added, In 2014 our coil and OEM customers were
formulating for cure temperatures down to 170C and 110C
respectively. We responded and developed a special line of catalysts to meet this demanding temperature requirement and have
been experiencing good success. Our new NACURE XC-311 is
our champion product for these applications.
Other products that King Industries has launched include:
NACURE XC-31, a catalyst for low temperature cure; K-FLEX
XM-337, a resin modified for improving durability of thin films;
K-KAT 651, a hydrolytically stable tin free bismuth catalyst;
NACORR 1389MS, designed for primerless direct-to-metal
(DTM) corrosion protection; K-STAY 555, for improved antisag; and DISPARLON AQH-800, an easy-to-use thixotrope for
waterborne applications.
Giaudrone of Eastman Chemical Company also said that
the paint industry has been preoccupied over recent years with
achieving performance at reduced VOC and emission levels.
Now some attention seems to be focusing towards functional paint where the coating offers functionality beyond the
basics. Examples of functional coatings are anti-microbial, energy absorbing, sound absorbing products, he said.
Giaudrone added that, in terms of new product launches,
Additives tend to have very long product life cycles.
He added, At Eastman Chemical Company we have a very
strong pipeline of projects that when launched will bring benefit to the market. Much of our new technologies are focused
on addressing challenges associated with major market trends,
such as health and wellness, energy efficiency and environmental impact.
An example of this was the launch of our Solus family of
rheology additives which offer customers improved productivity and the ability to achieve lower VOC and emissions while
delivering performance gains in the area of appearance across

a range of automotive applications. We also have a strong technology pipeline aligned with major market trends, for example:
BPA-free packaging solutions, layer reduction solutions and improved indoor air quality solutions.
Siltechs Ruckle said that his company is combining chemistries to provide multi-functional properties. This may mean
non-foaming wetting agents or reactive additives.
Interestingly, Ruckle added that most of Siltechs new products are developed in partnership with customers.
In 2014 we developed emulsifiers and actives for coatings
defoamer formulators, a new high slip agent and several other products, he said. We also introduced a variation on our
PFOS-free Fluorosil perfluoroalkyl functional silicones which
made them reactive in condensation or free radical/UV cured

systems. This allows for locking the additive into the network
of the coating. For example, Fluorosil ACR C7-F is a UV curable version of this technology.

Looking Forward
King Industries has recently completed the purchase of an 11acre parcel of land in Waterbury, Connecticut for production
expansion. Its groundbreaking is planned for spring of 2015.
We have designed a state of the art, inherently safe, and
highly efficient plant with operator safety and environmental
awareness being the most important elements in our design,
King said.
While Giaudrone said that joint ventures and acquisitions
are important to Eastman Chemical Companys growth strategy, the company does not yet have any planned for 2015.
We are very excited about the four acquisitions we completed in 2014 which include BPs Aviation Turbine Oils business, Knowlton Technologies, Taminco, and Commonwealth
Laminating, he said.
Specific to our coatings additives portfolio, Eastmans recent acquisition of Taminco brings complementary technology
platforms to our innovation tool kit and our dedication to the
coatings industry continues with the recent announcement to
expand the capacity of our Texanol plant in Longview, Texas,
he added. CW

Pigment Market Update

The pigment market has been given a boost by a recovering economy and an
invigorated automotive market.
Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

he pigments market has been steadily however slowly

recovering since the economic downturn. Raw material prices, once extremely unstable, have become more
consistent. A revitalized automotive market has provided a big
boost for pigments suppliers, and 2015 is expected to be at least
as strong as 2014.
According to Ahmed Tahir, industry marketing manager,
Transportation and Industrial Coatings and Pigments for Plastics,
BASF Corp., the pigment market benefited from the rebound in
the auto market in 2014, with light vehicle builds approaching
record levels with continued interest in differentiated effects.
The industrial coatings market also showed an improvement
in 2014, he said. The housing market continued its uneven and
slow recovery in 2014. For 2015, we expect a similar trend, albeit
with a smaller growth for automotive and industrial sectors.
Competition remains stiff for the pigments market, and industry experts expect that to stay true in the coming year.
Sun Chemical Performance Pigments continued to see a
positive upswing in the global pigments market in 2014, especially in the high performance and special effect pigments
markets, said Michael T. Venturini, global marketing manager
Coatings, Performance Pigments, Sun Chemical.
He added, Sun Chemical increasingly sees the supplier base
becoming more global as regional suppliers enter other regions
and markets. The competitive pressure, however, tends to give
rise to regional requirements as producers respond to local
needs and requirements.
We expect an increased focus on technical service, quality,
performance and environmental considerations. We are always
looking to other pigment markets, global technology and consumer trends that influence pigment consumption. The trends
can be driven both by legislation and the end consumer.
Gary Wulf, VP operations and general manager at Sincol USA,
said that the pigments market grew in 2014 because of the general stabilization of the global economy. Pigment consumption,
he said, is a reflection of increased consumer demand.
We expect the climate for pigment consumption in 2015 to
continue to expand with the general health of the global economy, Wulf said. For Sincol in particular, we expect growth to
exceed the general growth of the economy due to our emphasis

on development of higher performance pigments demanded by

the paint and coatings markets. Our investment in pollution
control will see dividends as well with the closure of more pigment manufacturing plants in both China and India.

What to Expect in 2015

Given the scope of the pigments market, it is strongly influenced
by economic, environmental and at times, political factors.
According to Falko Orlowski, executive vice president of sales
and marketing at Trust Chem USA, most pigment relevant intermediates by now are produced in China.
As the Chinese government is increasingly paying attention
to environmental protection, it is becoming more difficult to predict cost, he said. There are an increasing number of temporary
shutdowns, creating a challenge for all manufacturers who will
have to plan accordingly and ensure proper supply lines.
Orlowski added that both China and North America are expected to be key areas for growth in 2015.
Sincols Wulf said that consolidation of both pigment manufacturers and pigment intermediate manufacturers is having a
significant impact on the pigment market.
Those who have invested in the infrastructure and intellectual
property to meet environmental and regulatory demand will be
the long term survivors, Wulf said. There have been instances
this past year where competition between intermediate suppliers
was reduced with the closure of plants as a result of environmental
compliance. This caused some dramatic fluctuations in raw material costs and resultant pigment costs. The decline in commercial
publication has impacted pigment demand for this segment with
pigment manufacturers needing to refocus on other markets.
Wulf said that the developed markets of North America, the
European Union and Japan will increase at the rate of the general
economic recovery. It is the demand of consumer consumption
in the developing parts of the world that will yield the greatest
growth, he said. As a middle class develops and grows, so will
the demand for consumable products that have pigmentation.
Venturini of Sun Chemical said that he expected to continue
seeing demand for pigments with unique performance properties that are tailored specially for the end users application,
such as stability/flocculation resistance in zero VOC systems,

enhanced chemical and bleach resistance, increased strength and
more value, and improved dispersability.
Environmental regulations and social change for sustainable raw materials with less environmental impact are driving
rapid change and innovation in all segments of the coatings
market. The trend is well established in Europe and the United
States, but is quickly growing in other regions.
Consumers today have access to more information than ever
before and increasingly educate themselves prior to making purchases to be sure the product meets their socio-environmental
requirements, he said. Paint producers are responding and this
in turn drives upstream suppliers, including pigment suppliers.
Venturini said that China, India and Eastern Europe, are the
markets where per capita gross domestic product is the fastest
growing. Automotive and industrial coatings will remain the
foundation for growth of high performance pigments markets,
however, growing requirements for improved stability and functionality will position architectural and building materials for
tremendous potential growth.
Globally, we expect to see further growth in high performance pigments as the replacement of heavy metal pigments
continues, he said. Legislative requirements will play an increasing role in the reformulation.
In Europe, Venturini added, there is upside in the automotive market and after a significant period of depressed sales, the
sector is improving. Currently black and white remain the top
automotive colors supported by the popularity of effect blacks
and pearlescent whites. Specialty colors indicate the consumers
desire to differentiate and we expect an increase in chromatic
colors as consumers seek out new color technology.
While Asian countries will be influential in 2015, BASFs
Tahir said that Mexico is also noteworthy. The United States
has reduced the manufacturing cost gap to Asian producing nations significantly by narrowing predictions for 2015, he said.
Mexico remains one of the leaders in low-cost manufacturing
and attracting significant manufacturing investments.

Sustaining Sustainability
The demand for environmentally responsible products isnt going
anywhere, and the pigments market, in particular, presents suppliers with several opportunities to go green. According to Tahir,
the industrys conversation regarding sustainability has most recently become a conversation about total cost of ownership.
Sustainability is a key component of TCO as well as regulatory
compliance, he said. In certain markets - such as furniture and
flooring - sustainable offerings are a differentiator. Sustainability
is a key metric for us when undertaking any new development.
Venturini said that self-regulation by paint producers and
trade organizations will play a larger role affecting everything from end-of-life directives to volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) to environmental footprints.
This drives change and creates opportunities that will favor those that manufacture to the highest global standards, he
said. We see these challenges as great opportunities for growth
at Sun Chemical. Were working closely with our customers to

provide them with solutions for that both meet their individual
needs and regulatory requirements.
As an example, Venturini added that in 2014, Sun Chemical
introduced Sunfast Elastomer Black pigments, which are made
from recycled rubber.
It is a performance material that provides formulators with
a low gloss black pigment with improved jetness for waterborne,
solventborne and powder coatings that can impart physical
toughness, chemical resistance and water resistance onto most
applications, he said.
Made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled rubber,
the newest addition to Sun Chemical Performance Pigments
diverse pigment line utilizes a fine particle size black elastomer
pigment that creates an attractive low sheen coating with excellent flow and leveling in thin, smooth finishes. Ideal for coatings
on plastic, wood, coil and powder coatings, the new offering is
well-suited for use on consumer electronics, automotive interiors, flooring, cabinets, furniture, direct to metal finishes, and
sound-proofing coatings.
For its part, Wulf said that Sincol invested in sustainable solutions years ago, which has certainly paid off.
Sincol has long held the belief that environmental compliance would be crucial and made investments to stay ahead of
new compliance regulations, having invested more than $30
million in pollution control of waste water from our manufacturing plant, he said. The new environmental regulations in
China that take effect starting in 2015 have already been met or
exceeded. We have also seen the trend for higher manufacturing
costs as a result of demand for higher labor costs. Investments
have been made to improve the efficiency in manufacturing resulting is lower labor demand.

Meeting Customer Needs

In addition to offering customers eco-friendly products, suppliers are challenged with narrowing down a wide variety of
options to meet specific customer needs, such as performance
attributes. In order to do that, Venturini said, companies need
to provide high-quality products, top-notch service and value.
In terms of performance, [that includes] light fastness, durability,
weather fastness and ease of use, he said. Additionally, the market
is always looking for innovations new materials that can help them
differentiate their products and their customers products.
Wulf said that Sincols customers are also looking for functional
equivalents such as lightfastness that can be achieved with less expensive pigment chemistry. We also see customers who prefer to
deal with suppliers that are actual manufacturers of the pigment.
Slight adjustments such as color can be made to meet specific requirements. Affiliation with the pigment manufacturer assures
quicker responses with inquiries of regulatory data, he said.
Tahir, of BASF, said that for specific industries, customers
are always interested in novel effects and a robust pipeline of
pigment developments. Supply security for extended periods of
time is important for customers in the automotive sector.
He added, Consistent products with reliable supply and
support are important to all customers. CW

BASF and Glunz, a manufacturer of

wood-based panels, have jointly developed four new colors for medium-density
fiberboards (MDF). The color shades
Royal, Curry, Berry and Terra are based
on BASF pigment preparations from the
Dispers range. They are distributed under the brand name INNOVUS Coloured
MDF as part of the global INNOVUS dcor collection of Glunz.
The patent-registered Dispers pigment
preparations have been developed by BASF
specifically for use in wood-based panels
such as MDF. These specially designed fiberboard materials consist of mass-colored
wood fibers and offer virtually unlimited
design options for various fields of application from top quality interior fittings
and store design to trendy office furniture.
Dispers pigment preparations ensure an
even mass coloration of the material and
stand out due to their great shine as well as
their color and light stability.
As early as 1999 Glunz started working with BASF pigment preparations to
produce mass-colored medium-density
fiberboards. Previously, the portfolio
of Glunz, the German subsidiary of the
Portuguese Sonae Indstria Group with
its headquarters in Meppen, Lower
Saxony, consisted of black (Dispers black
0077) and grey (Dispers grey 0056). Both
shades will remain part of the future
range, which now boasts four new colors:
The product name Royal has been chosen for the deep ink blue of Dispers 6311,
Curry for the strong yellow of Dispers
2355 while the dark chestnut-brown
Dispers 2899 red is called Berry and the
sophisticated Dispers 2866 brown has
been christened Terra.
The new color collection opens up
a completely new range of esthetic options for MDF, said Juliane Krsemann,
marketing manager for pigments at BASF.
The colors that we have developed in
close cooperation with Glunz perfectly
harmonize with and complement each
other. They are part of a design concept

that does not just, for a short while, reflect the current zeitgeist but that is part
of a long-term trend.
Experts from BASF have helped Glunz
not only to develop the colors and start
their production at the Meppen plant but
have also advised them beforehand on
the selection of colors for the extended
INNOVUS collection.

AkzoNobel and Partners

Looking to Turn Sugar Beet
into Raw Materials
AkzoNobel has joined forces with
SuikerUnie,
Rabobank,
Deloitte,
Investment and Development Agency
for the Northern Netherlands (NOM),
Groningen Seaports, and the Province of
Groningen, to investigate the possibility
of producing chemicals from beet-derived
sugar feedstock.
The parties have asked Deloitte to
perform a feasibility study to provide an
independent critical review and economic assessment on the viability of several
business cases for commercial production in the Delfzijl chemical cluster in the
Netherlands.
Part of ongoing industry efforts to replace increasingly scarce non-renewable
raw materials, the partnership could potentially lead to the synthesis of a range
of chemicals in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
It follows the recent publication of a
report by Deloitte, which singles out the
Netherlands as a cost leader in the production of sugar. The production of sugar
beet is also expected to grow significantly
due to impending de-regulation.
We know that the Netherlands can
produce ample volumes of sugar beet,
explained Knut Schwalenberg, managing director of AkzoNobel Industrial
Chemicals, who is also responsible for
the companys Delfzijl activities. We will
now study how this can be used to create additional production and jobs in the
Delfzijl area.

BASF and Glunz Develop Four New Colors

for Medium-Density Fiberboards

Added Marco Waas, Director of

RD&I and Technology at AkzoNobel
Industrial Chemicals: We are always
looking to use innovation to drive sustainable growth. The beauty of this project is that its also a perfect fit with our
own Planet Possible approach to developing new technologies that are less fossil-based and reduce our environmental
footprint across the value chain.
Commenting on the partnership,
Albert Markusse, CEO of SuikerUnie,
said: The really interesting aspect of this
approach is the collaboration that will
take place between different sectors agriculture, chemicals and logistics. The results will be interesting for us all.
Siem Jansen, President of the
Investment and Development Agency for
the Northern Netherlands (NOM), also
hopes for a positive outcome: Sugar
beets are a major crop, not only in the
northern part of the Netherlands, but
also across the border in Niedersachsen.
New high value products based on this
crop will impact the whole value chain
and could provide an important boost to
the regional economy.
The study will take around three
months to complete and the partners expect to identify one or more successful
business cases for commercial production
in Delfzijl.

Transaction
Completed Between
Wintershall and Statoil
BASF Group company Wintershall
is continuing its growth course in
Norway. By acquiring shares in the
production fields Gja (5%) and Vega
(24.5%), Wintershall is increasing its
production in Norway from about
40,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe)
to about 60,000 boe per day. In addition, Wintershall is taking over shares
in the Aasta Hansteen development
project (24%), the Asterix discovery
(19%), the Polarled pipeline project (13.2%) and in four exploration
licences near Aasta Hansteen. The
shares in the assets encompass reserves
and resources (2P/2C) of around 170
million boe. Furthermore, Wintershall
will also assume the operatorship
of the Vega production field.[1] The
transfer of operatorship from Statoil
to Wintershall is planned for the end
of the first quarter of 2015.
Wintershall has purchased the shares
for US$1.25 billion. The transaction
is financially effective retroactively to
January 1, 2014.
A further payment of up to US$50
million will be made once Aasta Hansteen
has been developed in accordance with
the current project plan. Additionally
both companies have agreed to work together in developing the exploration potential of the Vring Basin.
With this transaction, we are taking a
major step towards achieving our goal of
establishing ourselves as one of the leading oil and gas companies in Norway,
said Rainer Seele, Chairman of the Board
of Executive Directors of Wintershall.
Last year we took over the operatorship of the Brage platform and commenced the self-operated production
of oil and gas in Norway. We have always said that this is just the beginning
for us and that we want to increasingly
position ourselves as an operator of
producing fields. I am therefore happy
that the agreement with Statoil also
envisages that Wintershall shall take

over the operatorship of Vega, said

Bernd Schrimpf, managing irector of
Wintershall Norge.

BASF is one of the first European manufacturers to have switched its entire
portfolio of polystyrene-based insulation
products for the European market to a
new flame retardant, nine months ahead
of the deadline laid down in the EU
REACH Regulation on chemicals. Both
EPS (expandable polystyrene) products
(Styropor and Neopor) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) products (Styrodur)
will be manufactured in Europe using
a polymeric flame retardant (PolyFR),
which has a much better environmental
profile than the HBCD (hexabromocyclododecane) used in the past, the company stated.
BASF completed the switchover to the
new flame retardant in close liaison with
its customers. BASF had already switched
most of its EPS range by March of this
year and has already supplied customers
throughout Europe.
According to BASF, with PolyFR, it
is possible as before to manufacture insulation materials that meet the strict fire
regulations applicable to construction
products. It will be possible in the future
to manufacture insulation materials with
this flame retardant that meet class B1
specifications under German standards
(schwerentflammbar: difficult to ignite)
and Class E under European standards.
As it is classed as a POP (persistent organic pollutant) under the UN Environment
Program and as a svhc (substance of very
high concern) under the REACH regulation
the use of HBCD as a flame retardant in
the EU will be prohibited as of August 21,
2015 and PolyFR, which is harmless, will
be used instead. This is the outcome of several years of testing and development supported by BASF.
Although handling of the flame retardant HBCD as such is prohibited, insulation containing HBCD is harmless to
humans and the environment, both during use and during removal and energy
recovery. That is because the flame retardant is embedded in the polymer matrix.

Charles Ross & Son Co.

Introduces New Powder
Injection Mixer

Wacker Develops Water

Scavenger for Silane-Curing
Adhesives and Sealants

Ross is offering a new high-efficiency

charging hopper for its line of High Shear
Mixers with Solids/Liquid Injection
Manifold (SLIM) Technology. The SLIM
is a unique rotor/stator device engineered
for high-speed powder injection into
liquid without the need for eductors or
pumps. The improved hopper design ensures a steady rate of feed delivery and
prevents rat holes or bridging of bulk
solids. Typical solids dispersed using the
SLIM include fumed silica, CMC, carbon black, graphite, talc, alginates, pectin, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate,
starch, clays, alumina, carbomers, salts,
dye powders and other additives or fillers.
The mix chamber is equipped with a
solenoid-operated multi-position modulating valve for maintaining a liquid flow
rate within 80 percent to 100 percent of
the 500 gpm design flow rate.
All product contact parts are stainless
steel 316 polished to 150-grit (32 Ra) finish. Tri-clamp connections on the liquid
inlet, powder inlet and mixture outlet allow for easy disassembly and cleaning. The
mixer is supplied with a cartridge-type double mechanical seal and barrier fluid tank.

Wacker is expanding its product range

of functional silanes with a new arylalkoxysilane monomer. Marketed as
Geniosil XL 70, this additive is designed
as a water scavenger for silane-curing adhesive and sealant formulations. It is particularly suitable for products that must
avoid unpleasant odors when applied.
Due to its high flash point, the additive
is also easier to store and handle. The
new water scavenger is compatible with
all Geniosilsilane-modified polymers and
organofunctional silanes.
Geniosil XL 70 is a clear, colorless,
low-viscosity silane which belongs to the
arylalkoxysilane group. Unlike conventional water scavengers for silane-curing
adhesives and sealants, the liquid has only
a very faint odor. Consequently, the water
scavenger is ideal for adhesives and sealants used over large areas. Compounders
can formulate products such as parquet
adhesives and liquid water-proofing systems that do not create odors with the
additive and are in line with increasingly
stringent occupational health and safety
regulations, the company said.
Additionally, Geniosil XL 70 has a
much higher flash point than conventional water scavengers, which is 96C as
per ISO 3679. This is an advantage for
processors. For example, less effort is required to store and process the additive.
As silane-curing adhesives and sealants react with water, water scavengers
are an essential component in such
products. They protect the polymers
from moisture inherent to a formulation via fillers and other ingredients.
Moreover, water scavengers ensure
that the product can be used without
restriction throughout its given minimum shelf life. The required dosage of
Geniosil XL 70 depends on the formulation components and the desired shelf
life of the end product. CW

BASF Launches Orange

Pigment for Industrial
Coatings Applications
BASF announced the North American
launch of Irgazin Orange EH1287 for
industrial applications, which include
agriculture, construction and earth moving equipment coatings. Irgazin Orange
EH1287 improves material flow allowing
formulators to increase pigment loading
for higher opacity and reduced production costs without negatively impacting
coating gloss. Under test conditions,
the product has also shown to foam less
when dispersed and is free of lead which
is an important sustainability point for
industrial coatings manufacturers.

Fords Design of Excellence Best of Show, Mothers Shine
Award for Excellence in Detail and Shine, as well as the honor
of being one of three finalists in the SEMA Battle of the Builders.
The hot rod reminiscent of a late 50s, early 60s design was
fabricated and painted by Hot Rods by JSK. It has a traditional
look even down to the paint color Axaltas Orange Crush
ChromaPremier basecoat.
When asked what was the key to success with this threeyear project, Jeff Kinsey, owner Hot Rods by JSK responded,
I took my time and found the finest materials to use every
step of the way. It has been a privilege to partner with Axalta
at SEMA 2014.
This is not just an old Ford restoration, as every piece
has been newly fabricated from scratch. The brilliant

Axalta color may shine on the outside but Yd Open is

flawless underneath as well as inside and out. The body resembles a Deuce Fordor sedan, but it is built with a custom
frame with an S arch over the rear wheels. The back doors
open like suicide doors on this four-door car because there
is no B pillar to inhibit entry. This allows for easy access
to the interior.
The hot rod runs on a bored and stroked Thunderbird
312 cubic inch real Y block V8 engine with chromed Laker
style headers that flow into short pipes that come out of
each side. The rare Hilborne fuel injection unit has been converted with modern-day digital controls. And for maximum
drivability JSK used a T-5 Chevy five-speed with a custom
designed shifter. When owner Don Smith of Mansfield,Texas
hits the road in Yd Open, maybe Axalta should change the
name of its ChromaPremier paint color from Orange Crush
to Orange Lightning, the company said. CW
