Common Core standards (or GLCEs if not available in Common Core) addressed: The physically literate individual applies
knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
(Note: Write as many as needed. Indicate taxonomy levels and connections to applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to particular learners
write the name(s) of the learner(s) to whom it applies.)

II. Before you start

Identify prerequisite
knowledge and skills.

Students will have a basic understanding of how to set and bump the volleyball and how it is used in a
game like setting.
Pre-assessment (for learning): Ask students specific questions on how to pass and set the volleyball to see if they
remembered anything from the previous week

Outline assessment
activities
(applicable to this lesson)

Formative (for learning): Have students demonstrate the bump and set in front of the teacher and adjust my
teaching based on their performance
Formative (as learning): Students will be assessing when he/she is the coach and will provide feedback to peers
Summative (of learning):

What barriers might this

lesson present?
-students may feel
intimidated when playing
keep it up since they
are combining both the
bump and set
What will it take
neurodevelopmentally,
experientially,
emotionally, etc., for your
students to do this lesson?

9-15-14

Provide Multiple Means of

Representation
Provide options for perceptionmaking information perceptible
I will be demonstrating the bump
and set as well as saying it loud to
help every student understand what
I expect

Provide Multiple Means of Action

and Expression
Provide options for physical actionincrease options for interaction
Students will be able to
demonstrate before they perform
the activity

Provide Multiple Means of

Engagement
Provide options for recruiting
interest- choice, relevance, value,
authenticity, minimize threats
Students will pick what song they
want to run to

Provide options for language,

mathematical expressions, and
symbols- clarify & connect
language
I will be using different analogies
for how to set a volleyballraise
the roof and also holding a jug of
water for clarity on how to set

Provide options for expression and

communication- increase medium
of expression
Students will use two different types
of balls

Provide options for sustaining effort

and persistence- optimize
challenge, collaboration, masteryoriented feedback
Students will use two different types
of balls to increase the challenge.
Students will still provide feedback
to peers and collaborate to solve
issues on their own

Provide options for comprehensionactivate, apply & highlight

Provide options for executive

functions- coordinate short & long
term goals, monitor progress, and
modify strategies
Students will continue these skills
throughout the unit. I will keep
adjusting my lessons to fit their
skill level

Provide options for self-regulationexpectations, personal skills and

strategies, self-assessment &
reflection
By the end I will expect every
student to use correct form while
passing a volleyball.
I will ask students how they think
their effort was today
I will then assess how I believed
their effort was
I will ask them the same thing
about their respectful listening and
teamwork
I will assess how I believe they did
and what they did good and what
they need to do better before next
class

Materials-what materials
(books, handouts, etc) do
you need for this lesson
and are they ready to
use?

15 squishy volleyballs
15 lite volleyballs
15 balloons
stereo with auxiliary cord

No special setupjust need volleyballs. Students will be in groups of three or four dispersed
throughout the gym
How will your classroom
be set up for this lesson?

for each component of the lesson. Include important higher order thinking questions and/or
prompts.
As soon as students enter I will have them gather
Students will gather around the white board
around the white board
Once all students are around the whiteboard we
will start reading the goals for the day. The goals
include: 1. Students will be respectful listeners
while classmates share good news 2. Students will
give their best effort when running around the gym
for three minutest 3. Students will try their best in
improving their volleyball skills by using correct
form. 4. Students will work as a team and be
respectful while playing keep it up

Students will read off the goals

I will call on students to share their good news. I

will set my watch to five minutes.

Students will raise their hands to share their good

news

I will tell students to begin running counterclockwise around the gym.

Students will begin running after they pick the song

they want to run to. They will run for 3 minutes

I will tell my students to grab drinks and then meet

around the center circle. I will then review what we
have done thus far as well as re explain proper
technique.

the lesson)

Next I will explain the activity. In their groups of

three or four they will try to keep the ball/balloon
up as long as they can without the ball touching the
floor. To begin, students will stand about two big
steps apart. If there is a group of three the students
will be in a triangle formation. If they have four
people, they will be in a square position. To start
the activity students will toss the ball near the
center of their formation. Students MUST say
either MINE or GOT IT before they pass. At
this point I will explain the importance of
communication in the game of volleyball. To show
this I will choose a few students to help me
demonstrate the activity The objective is to see
how many passes the students can keep up. For
best results I will tell the students to try to keep the
ball in the center of their formation. The students
will first use balloons to keep it up. Next they will
move to the squishy balls and lastly they will move
on to the lite balls.
After explaining the activity, I will divide the class
into groups of three or four, have them get a ball,
and start the activity. I will have them use a balloon
for five minutes, a squishy ball for five minutes,
and a lite ball for five minutes or for however long
there is left in class.

11:27

Closure
(conclusion,
culmination,
wrap-up)

Students will be sitting and listening to instructions

Students will do the activity. They will provide

feedback as well as encouragement throughout this
lesson. They will count and see how many times
they can keep the balloon and the volleyballs up.

After students are done using the lite balls, I will

have them thank their teammates for being on their
team today then I will tell them to put the
volleyballs away in the bag. I will tell them to grab
a drink and line up at the door.

Students will thank their teammates, put the balls

away, and then line up at the door

I will ask students how they think their effort was

today

Students will give me a thumbs up, thumbs down,

or in between

I will then assess how I believed their effort was

I will ask them the same thing about their
respectful listening and teamwork

Students will give me a thumbs up, thumbs down,

or in between

I will assess how I believe they did and what they

did good and what they need to do better before
next class
I will wish the kids to have a nice rest of their day
Your reflection about the lesson, including evidence(s) of student learning and engagement, as well as ideas for improvement
for next time. (Write this after teaching the lesson, if you had a chance to teach it. If you did not teach this lesson, focus on the
process of preparing the lesson.)
9-15-14

Overall, this lesson went really well! The routine was a little different today, which threw some of the kids off. They were a
little more anxious and a little more disruptive than usual when we gathered around the white board. When we began to play
keep it up, they did a nice job. I could definitely see which students were the competitive ones and which ones werent.
Sometimes, the competitive students would get frustrated with the non-competitive student, which caused a little tension in
the group. Other than that, I thought most of the students tried their best to improve. The balloons were helpful in gaining
the students confidence since they were able to keep it up for quite a long time. They had a little trouble with the regular
volleyballs at first, but they were starting to get the hang of it by the end.
