II. Before you start

Identify prerequisite
knowledge and skills.

Students will have a basic understanding of how to set and bump the volleyball and how it is used in a
game like setting as well as which one to use for different circumstances.
Pre-assessment (for learning): Students will show me that they know the proper form for a bump and a set

Outline assessment
activities
(applicable to this lesson)

What barriers might this

lesson present?
-students may feel
awkward during yoga
since most of them have
never done it before
-students may get
frustrated if they cannot
keep the ball up
What will it take
neurodevelopmentally,
experientially,
emotionally, etc., for your
students to do this lesson?

9-15-14

Formative (for learning): Ask students specific questions on how to pass and set the volleyball to see if they
remembered anything from the previous week. Ask them in what situations you would use a bump vs. a set.
Formative (as learning): Students will be assessing when providing feedback during keep it up
Summative (of learning):
Provide Multiple Means of
Representation
Provide options for perceptionmaking information perceptible
I will demonstrate verbally as well
as visually the activity we will be
doing.

Provide Multiple Means of Action

and Expression
Provide options for physical actionincrease options for interaction
Students will be interacting with
peers by providing feedback during
keep it up

Provide Multiple Means of

Engagement
Provide options for recruiting
interest- choice, relevance, value,
authenticity, minimize threats
I will give the students a list of yoga
exercises and have them choose
one.

Provide options for language,

mathematical expressions, and
symbols- clarify & connect
language

Provide options for expression and

communication- increase medium
of expression
Students will be using two different
types of ballslite and regular

Provide options for sustaining effort

and persistence- optimize
challenge, collaboration, masteryoriented feedback
I will challenge students to see how
many passes a group can get in a
row. Students will have to work
together to accomplish this

Provide options for comprehensionactivate, apply & highlight

Provide options for executive

functions- coordinate short & long
term goals, monitor progress, and
modify strategies
Students will continue these skills
throughout the unit. I will keep
adjusting my lessons to fit their
skill level

Provide options for self-regulationexpectations, personal skills and

strategies, self-assessment &
reflection
By the end I will expect every
student to use correct form while
passing a volleyball.
I will ask students how they think
their effort was today
I will then assess how I believed
their effort was
I will ask them the same thing
about their respectful listening and
teamwork
I will assess how I believe they did
and what they did good and what
they need to do better before next
class

Materials-what materials
(books, handouts, etc) do
you need for this lesson
and are they ready to
use?

15 lite volleyballs
15 regular volleyballs
stereo with auxiliary cord

No special setupjust need volleyballs. Students will be in groups of three or four dispersed
throughout the gym
How will your classroom
be set up for this lesson?

Motivation
(opening/
introduction/
engagement)

9-15-14

Describe teacher activities

AND
student activities
for each component of the lesson. Include important higher order thinking questions and/or
prompts.
I will be encouraging and high fiving students as
Students will begin running clockwise around the
they run in a circle around the classroom and I will
gym as soon as they enter for five minutes. They
join them
have the choice to run or hang from the bar that is
located on the wall. They are only allowed to hang

on the bar up to ten seconds then they have to

resume running.
10:55

I will wait for all of the students to grab drinks and

for all of them to be sitting before I begin talking
I will begin discussion with the goals of the day
and I will call on students to read the goals. The
goals will consist of1. Students will be respectful
listeners while classmates give reasons for the
importance of communication in volleyball 2.
Students will give their best effort during the yoga
workout 3. Students will try their best improving
their volleyball skills by using correct form when
passing

11:08

I will call on students to share the importance of

communication in volleyball. I will set my watch to
five minutes.

After students grab drinks they will head to the

whiteboard and sit down
Students will raise their hands to read off the goals

Students will raise their hands to share the

importance of communication

I will have the students form a circle around the

center of the gymabout arms length away from
each other
I will explain to the class that we will be doing a
yoga workout. The yoga workout will consist of:
plank, airplane pose, three legged dog pose, reverse
warrior pose, and tree pose (there are a deck of
cards in my desk that show images for all of these
poses as well as how to do them)
*I will play calming music during the workout
I will perform the exercises with the students

Closure

Students will perform the workout. There will be

about a fifteen second break in between each pose.
Students will not talk during this exercise.

Once workout is finished, students will get drinks

and then gather around the center circle
I will review what we have gone over the previous
weekshow to bump, set, and how to tell which
one to use when playing keep it up.

Students will sit and listen

I will then explain the activity: I will group

students into 3 or 4. I will have them begin with the
lite balls. They will play keep it up for five
minutes. They must say MINE or GOT IT before
they pass. After five minutes with the lite ball they
will transition into a real volleyball. They will play
keep it up for the rest of class time. The group with
the most passes in a row will do extra fitness as
their reward. I will have them do twenty jumping
jacks.

Students will perform the activity using proper

form. They will also be able to idenifty which pass
they should useeither the set (if pass is coming
above the head) or the bump (if the pass is below
their head) Students will be respectful and also
demonstrate communication by saying GOT IT or
MINE.

After students are done using the regular balls, I

will have them thank their teammates for being on

Students will thank their teammates, put the balls

away, and then line up at the door

Students with the most passes in a row will do 20

jumping jacks

their team today then I will tell them to put the

volleyballs away in the bag. I will tell them to grab
a drink and line up at the door.
11:28

I will ask students how they think their effort was

today
(conclusion,
culmination,
wrap-up)

Students will give me a thumbs up, thumbs down,

or in between

I will then assess how I believed their effort was

I will ask them the same thing about their
respectful listening and teamwork

Students will give me a thumbs up, thumbs down,

or in between

I will assess how I believe they did and what they

did good and what they need to do better before
next class
I will wish the kids to have a nice rest of their day
Your reflection about the lesson, including evidence(s) of student learning and engagement, as well as ideas for improvement
for next time. (Write this after teaching the lesson, if you had a chance to teach it. If you did not teach this lesson, focus on the
