Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson

Name of Book: Magic of Migration

Level: O

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related
to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today?
Todays focus was vocabulary and comprehension. We read the rest of the
book and talked about words that we were unsure of along with identifying
the main idea of each section.

2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
One thing that really went well was the discussion that we had. All the
students participated and helped their classmates when they were struggling
to remember a part. The students learned that not all animals migrate to
find a warmer home, they sometimes migrate to find a place to raise their
young. They also learned that there are some words that look like they might
be pronounced one way but are actually pronounced another way, like the
word salmon.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or

confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the
area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
comprehension, before/during/after reading.
Before finishing reading the book I was unsure of how well they would finish
reading the book, because the week before they struggled with the fluency of
it and has some difficulty with some of the words. As we were reading I found
myself not having to help them as much with some of the difficult words and
that they were actually reading it with hardly any struggle. After the reading
of the book, it really blew me away the conversation that we had about the
book. They were more willing to talk about what they had been reading.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it!

kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience?
Explain the situation.
One moment when a student grasped what we were talking about was when
we were reading the story. He was struggling to remember what all we had
been reading and got some animals confused. After I had asked him to go
back and look through his book it was like a little bulb clicked and he was able
to tell me the main ideas and all about what we had previously read and was
not embarrassed to read aloud what he had written on his paper.
Lesson Plan for 11-19-15
1. Review what we had read last week and go over the main ideas from last
week.
2. Take turns finish reading the book over migration, stopping after each
section to write down what we think the main idea is.
3. Talk about the main ideas of each section and discuss words that we were
unsure of.
4. Finish our KWL charts with what we learned about migration.
5. Discuss what we learned with each other.
