HIV

 It is a treatment that may stop you from

being infected with HIV after the HIV virus
has entered your body.
HIV exposure of any type…

 Unprotected sex
 Skin cuts
 Needle pricks / i. v. drugs
 Mother to baby etc
Time is Life…. Only 72 hours
 PEP is unlikely to work after 72 hours (3 days) of
exposure

 Medicine will not usually be prescribed after that

 The treatment is not a one-off dose - the

medicines must be taken every day for four
weeks
Rush to the doctor
 Accident and Emergency (A&E) department
of a hospital

 Go to your nearest sexual health clinic

 Any Qualified medical practitioner (if you

are at a remote place) and he’ll guide you
The scientific evidence
 A retrospective case-control study on health care
workers
 There was a 81% reduction in risk of infection with
the use of drugs after skin exposure.*
 Regimens were also useful if initiated after
childbirth in reducing mother-to-child HIV
transmission

How does PEP work ?
 Pathogenically, there is time lag between
HIV exposure, viral seeding, replication and
systemic infection

 Antiretrovirals (anti HIV) may be able to

intervene by inhibiting viral replication after
exposure
Remember !
 PEP does not work in all cases

 It only makes infection with HIV a lot less

likely.
Be careful if u want to live
 If an HIV infection develops and takes hold
of the body, it cannot be cured.

 Never rely on PEP to prevent getting HIV

because it does not always work
