Reflection Notes

Today I met with Mrs. Kalu to

discuss the expectations for my
observation this semester. I
explained the evaluation form and
time sheet. We also spoke about the
best time for me to come and
observe.
Today I observed Mrs. Kalus math
lesson on subtracting across zero. I
was able to see her use
EnVisionMath to teach her lesson.
She also taught students to use a
diagram to solve subtraction
problems.

Mrs. Kalu seems like a

disciplined teacher and I
feel that I will learn a lot
from her.

Today I observed students work on

their 4 and 5 times tables. Mrs.
Kalu had a meeting so, I was able
to work with a substitute on reading
science material on matter. Then I
assisted in reviewing by creating
content questions.

I especially enjoyed
creating questions and
reviewing with students.
The students seemed to
have a good understanding
of the material.

Today I worked with students in

small groups on rounding in the
tens, hundreds, and thousands
places. Then, I was able to work
with the whole class by creating
examples on the smart board.

I noticed a wide range of

ability today in terms of
rounding. Many students
were able to do so quickly,
while others seemed to
struggle. I was sure to
spend more time with
struggling students during
independent practice.

I like the way Mrs. Kalu

taught subtraction using a
diagram to represent the
problem. I feel that
students have a better
understanding when they
are able to visual the
problem.

Today I observed student working

on rounding numbers by creating
charts.

This strategy seemed to

help most students but
there were still a few
students that seemed lost.

Today I learned that Mrs. Kalu

would be out for a few weeks due
to a family matter. I observed the
substitute teacher, Ms. Hick, teach
the students how to find elapsed
time. She taught the students a
technique in which the students
find the minute, hour, minute.
Today I observed Ms. Hick
preparing the students for a test on
elapsed time for the following
Friday.

This technique was

difficult to understand,
even for me. I feel that
many of the students did
not understand the
material.

I observed Ms. Hick teach the

students about multiplication using
the lattice method.

The lattice method is an

effective strategy to use
for multiplying large
numbers. I feel that the
students learned a lot.
The students seemed to
understand the multiplying
by grouping technique.

Today I observed Ms. Hick

teaching students how to multiply
by breaking large numbers into
smaller number.
Today Mrs. Kalu came back from
her leave. She had a lot of work to
do to get the student caught up on
missed work. She talked to the
students about what they had
learned during her absence. She
made sure to go back to many of
the assignment and re-teach them.

The students seemed to

understand the material a
little better than my last
visit but many still seemed
lost.

Both Mrs. Kalu and I felt

that the students were
confused about many of
the strategies to use for
solving math problems.

Today I taught the students a lesson

on elapsed timed. I began by asking
students about their favorite shows.
I introduced the term elapsed time.
I explained that we would be using
T-charts and number lines to solve
problems with elapsed time.
After students switched classes, I
came back to teach the lesson on
elapsed time to Mrs. Kalus second
set of students. I began by asking
students about their favorite shows.
I then introduced elapsed time, Tcharts, and number lines.
Today, I observed Mrs. Kalu
elaborating on the lesson that I
taught on elapsed time.

My lesson required more

time than I had available.
Next time, I would be
more focused and use my
time better.

The second time around, I

was better about managing
my time. This lesson was
defineitly improved the
second time, but I still
could have used more time
to present his information.
I observed that the
students used the T-charts
and number lines to solve
their problems without
being told to do so. I feel
that these strategies helped
the students grasp the
material.
