Fitness & Wellness Concepts

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide students with developmentally appropriate knowledge and skills in health and
fitness. The course will address health-related issues in personal, interpersonal, and community settings. An
individual fitness requirement is required for passing the course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
In this course, the student will acquire knowledge and understanding of the major ideas in factors affecting
performance in physical activity. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

through lectures, assignment, and examination.
To apply health and wellness related issues in personal, interpersonal, and community settings through
assignments, and examination.
To develop a personal commitment towards leading a health and wellness lifestyle through laboratory
assessments, assignments, and journals.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:
The final grade will be will be determined by using the following point distribution.
Exams (Top 3 test scores/ 4 exams-maximum 100 points each
Exercise Response Journal Entry
Quizzes (Top 14 quiz scores/ 16 quizzes- maximum 10 points each)
In-Class Participation/Discussions

GRADING/EVALUATION
I.

Three Course Exams (100 points each= 300 points total) and Final Exam
There will be four exams, each covering approximately one third of the semester. The exams may
consist of multiple choice, true/false, matching, and short answer essay questions. The final exam will
NOT be comprehensive. Each exam will be timed at 75 minutes. You are required to take the exams
on the dates that are specified and within the time allotment.

The top 3 exam scores of the 4 exams (including the final) will count towards the students average. If
a student misses an exam for ANY reason, that exam will be considered the lowest score and will
be the one that is dropped. No testing windows will be reopened once the allotted time/date has
expired.

End of Module Quiz (140 points) (10pts each)


There will be a quiz at the end of each module. There are 16 modules and each quiz will be worth 10
points. You may take the quiz at any point during the week of that particular module, however, the
quiz will close Friday at 10pm. Modules, quizzes, and exams will not be reopened. Please make
arrangements to take them by the designated due date. If you miss a quiz, it will be considered
one of the two lowest quiz grades that will be dropped. The top 14 quiz grades out of a possible
16 quizzes will count toward a students average. Please write down all due dates on your
personal calendar so you do not forget. No testing windows will be reopened once the allotted
time/date has expired.

Daily Participation/ Contribution (260 points)


Each student will be expected to contribute to all class discussion questions. A yes, no, I agree,
I disagree response are NOT accepted. Please make your responses so that your classmates can gain
something from them. It is expected that assigned readings for each session are completed prior to
each module. Participation will be monitored by discussion, class activities, and assignments. Class
activities/discussion questions may be developed and assigned during the semester at the discretion of
the instructor such as internet research, reaction-opinion papers, and small group work. You are to
respond to the questions by posting a response to the discussion board and then respond to at least one
other student posting during that particular week for that specific module that is covered. The
discussion question will close each week at 10pm for each specific module. Discussion grades will be
given at the end of the semester by the instructor.
