Copyright and Fair Use
Many people work hard for their earnings; therefore, Copyrights and Fair Use policies are
essential. A Copyright is a form of protection used to keep the works of others from being stolen.
There are many regulations to restrict people from using these works, and it is illegal to violate
those policies. The copyrights give the author ownership of his works. Fair Use is the exception
to the copyright rule. One can only use the works of others if he uses it in certain forms.
Copyrights and fair use laws should be taken seriously by all people. The laws of
copyrights and fair use should be respected because the work of one person should not be open
for others to plagiarize. A copyright prevents another person from profiting of of someones
original creation. When one takes a piece of work and does not give credit, he is stealing.
Because stealing is a crime, plagiarizing is as well. Not only will taking the information without
permission affect the person who took it, it will also affect the original author. The author is
being stolen from, and other people are profiting off of his hard work. People should respect the
law because if not, they could be promoting social controversy.
Copyrights are most important to the author because they will not appreciate the fact that
people are thriving off of their works. It is also important because copyrights somewhat promote
growth. Because a student does not copy the information from a website, they have to think for
themselves. The student has to create his own original ideas instead of taking it from someone
else. Fair use is important because without it, educational activities would not be possible. A

student would not be able to copy something and insert it into his assignment because it would
be seen as plagiarism. Essentially, these are important so that the right person profits because of
his works.
It seems that not many people understand how they may be misusing the copyright law.
One example of an educator not properly using the copyright law would be if a teacher makes
copies of textbooks and guides to give to other students. Although there are ways that an
educator can improperly use information, there are correct ways. The teacher, Must be in a
classroom and at a non-profit educational institution. (Scholarly Communications, 2006). The
teacher cannot copy the information, but he can show it to them in the classroom for educational
purposes. In other words, an educator is allowed to use the information of others for educational
purposes if he does not duplicate the works without the authorization of the maker. NETS plays a
role in the education of copyrights because in section 5 it says Digital citizenship Students
understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and
ethical behavior. ( ISTE, 2007) they want to educate the students on what is ethical when
dealing with technology. and when one plagiarizes, he is starting a social issue so if the students
are able to understand them, then they might be able to prevent it.
Overall, copyright and fair use are great policies. If someone violates the rule, not only is
damaging his personal growth and cheating the author of his original works, but he is also setting
a precedent for future violations in our society. Lastly, information is a part of educational
growth, but if it is not being used legally, then the student might not efficiently benefit from it.
Consequently, in order to fully promote growth, the educator must accurately use the works.
