Step 1: Know the Learner

Describe your students in your classroom
Grade Level: 6
Race: Native American, Black, White, Hispanic
Ethnicity: Nigerian, Liberian, German, British, Brazilian, Peruvian
Gender: male and female
Socioeconomic characteristics that may impact learning: behavior based on the people
they are surrounded by, wealth and access to technology and other resources
Styles (learning and cognitive):. tactile and auditory and visual
Multiple intelligences: Naturalist strength, Musical strength, Logical strength, Existential
strength, Interpersonal strength, Kinesthetic strength, Verbal strength, Intrapersonal
strength, Visual strength
Cultural and language diversity:, Spanish, English,
Special needs: talented students, writing and reading disabled students, hearing impaired

Step 2: Articulate Objectives and Standards

Common Core Standards: 6.EE.B.7 Use variables to represent numbers and
write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem;
students should understand that a variable can represent an unknown
number(CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.B.7)
Common Core Standards:6.EE.B.7 Solve real-world and mathematical
problems by writing and solving equations, x + s = q and sx = q where s, q
and x are all non-negative rational numbers( CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.B.7)
Objectives: At the end of this course students will be able to solve expression &
equations, with variables and coefficients that represent numbers.
Students will also be able to write expressions and equations with real world
examples and word problems.
Students will use formulas when solving expressions.
Step 3: Identify Teaching and Learning Strategies
The teacher will add connections to everyday life in order to give the students a
better understanding of what is being taught.
The discussions will be more enhanced so that there will be more depth.
Project Based Learning will allow the students to learn while teaching.
Visual Aid will allow visual learners to remember the curriculum more.
Step 4: Identify and Select Support Technologies
Technologies and materials needed for the lesson: Online websites virtual
investigations, (http://www.coolmath.com/algebra)
calculator
Step 5: Evaluate and Revise the Design

How will you evaluate and revise the design.

In order to reach all students, and enable them to learn properly based on their cognitive and
learning styles, the teacher will not only speak to the students, but she will always make them
read their textbooks and use virtual investigations. The teacher could also try a Socratic seminar
discussion for the students.

Step 1: Ready the learner

How will you review learner characteristics and entry skills to ensure all are
ready for the lesson:
The teacher will assign homework for the lesson on the next day. All worksheets will include
practice that will help students with any learning/cognitive style. Online worksheets will be for
the hearing impaired and such. Advanced students will also be provided with this option so that
the can be challenged more. The students could also practice in online quizzes. Have essential
questions to provoke the students curiosity.
Step 2: Target Specific Objectives
Objectives: At the end of this course students will be able to solve expression &
equations, with variables and coefficients that represent numbers
Students will also be able to write expressions and equations with real world examples
and word problems.
Step 3: Prepare the lesson
Prepare the classroom: set up desks in a circle so that all can see each other for
the discussions.
Students will come into class and try to work on the essential question. After
time has been given for the equation or expression, one student who understands
the equation will explain to the class how he got the answer, afterwards the
teacher will summarize the equation in a way that all students will be able to
understand. The ending of the class will be spent working on individual virtual
investigations to improve the students independent thinking skills.
Identify technologies and materials: The student will use virtual investigations
websites such as http://www.coolmath.com/algebra . The teacher will need a
projector with overhead camera so that students can show their correct answer
to the class at once. The teacher will need a smart board when showing videos to
the class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZDWcU0i0o4 The students will
also play games to boost their interest in the lesson http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?

Check for Success: methods to determine lessons success:

The students will be given quizzes and skills assessments to check their weekly growth.

Action Plan
1- Learner preparation activities for the lesson:
virtual investigations
review games
essential questions
2-List what you will do to ready the classroom for the lesson:
Review prior knowledge on expressions
Assign homework pertaining to the next lesson
3-List teaching and learning activities for the lesson
Projects in which the students will teach the class and/or use posters
4-List personal prompts
Students must write their personal goals for the class
5-Support Technologies Checklist
Calculator and computer
6-List feedback instruments
Teachers will give the students monthly progress reports so the students know how well
they are doing.
7-List follow-up activities
Quizzes and assessments will be given and afterwards, the teacher will review the
mistakes with the class. At the end of each unit, the instructor will review with the students
everything that they have learned.
