Pre Investigation 10

Just as sound is the perception of changes in air pressure and sight the perception of light,
tastes and smells are the perception of chemicals in the air or in our food. (Society for
Neuroscience) Without smell our tastes buds focus on that particles in food that are sweet, salty,
sour, bitter, or bitter. That is why, when sick with a head cold, food is bland or does not have a
strong taste. (Society for Neuroscience) Airborne molecules are at fault for the way food smells
are perceived. They pass through the membranes of the nose into the sensory system. This
combination of odor detection and taste is what creates flavor.
When it comes to me and how I perceive taste that has definitely changed over time. It is said
that people have between 2,000 and 8,000 taste buds and that they are changed every two weeks.
Older the people get the less taste buds they can have. Adults can have less and less taste buds
over time. Even though smell has to be taken into account, the number of taste buds on
someones tongue can affect how strong flavoring of food is. (Bernays) I know for a fact that
over my life time I have changed my taste preference majorly. Growing up I have liked things
way more or less than I do now. I have experienced the change in preference in just the past
couple months. When it comes to beer and wine I have never really known much about it.
However, since I turned 21 in June, and my manager at work is a wino. I have begun to enjoy it
much more. I have been learning the proper way of going about new wines and found that the
more I try and focus on figuring out the ingredients the more I enjoy it. The same goes for this
class. The more I learn about hops, grains, yeast and everything in between in the process the
more I enjoy it. For the beer we are making with Darwins, we are using their preexisting beer,
but at the end of the batch we will be putting a pineapple flavoring in to it. For the food portion
of the competition we will be pairing it with a spicy chicken bowl. This would contain spicy

chicken and fried rice. We feel that it will pair nicely with the pineapple flavoring in our beer. A
sweet spicy!
